Default 17 year old and team to embark on an expedition to Cairo for H4H

I know how this sounds..... a big dreaming kid wants to do a massive drive for charity to be just like Charlie Boorman and co.

Seriously, In the summer of next year (2010), I plan to embark on an expedition anticlockwise around the med in aid of Help For Heroes.

I go to Pangbourne College in Berkshire, which is a school steeped in naval tradition. I am heavily involved in the CCF (Royal Marines and RAF) and plan on a career with the Fleet Air Arm.
I feel that Help For Heroes is the most deserving charity of them all, supporting our troops out in foreign theatres, and those back home who have given so much for their country.

The journey will take us through 15 countries.
    UK
    France
    Germany
    Austria
    Hungary
    Romania
    Bulgaria
    Turkey
    Syria
    Jordan
    Egypt
    Libya
    Tunisia
    Italy
    France
    Home

This thread is to make people aware of the expedition, although in its early stages, much planning has already been done in the way of obtaining Visas, Fixers and assessing the political stability of the countries we will visit.

The one thing i am unsure of is what do i need by way of a Spares Package?
The Main vehicle we will be using is a 1981 Series 3 pickup, it has just undergone a major engine rebuild: replacing the head, pushrods, injectors, exhaust. Courtesy of Rovertune Ltd.
Aswell as having new parabolics and dampers all round, it has had new brake shoes and cylinders fitted all round aswell.

I would be thankfull for any advice/information anyone may have about the expedition.
I am also on the lookout for some of the vital accesories required for the North African part (sand ladders, jerry cans, roof tent etc)

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Not wishing to rain on your parade, as the cause you are supporting cannot be faulted , but going for a drive round the med in a series landrover is not really pushing boundaries enough to generate a lot of support. If you were a team of guys pulling it round the med on a rope you might create a bit more excitement and thereby supoport JMHO

A trip like this has to be the "dream" of many a Land Rover owner, whether we could ever raise the money required to do it is another thing.
As has been said, what you are planning is not really a big challenge, it would make a great three month holiday for a bunch of mates though.
Personally, I think that the amount of money you could potentially raise will be less than the cost of the trip itself.
That said, I think anyone looking to raise money for such a cause has to be commended for their efforts.
The Europe part of the trip will eat up loads of cash, given the £/euro situation at the moment, Africa will be far cheaper, however access, via ferry will be in the region of £1200.
    There is a very good site for overland travel, the best site in fact it is predominately a bikers site but has loads of information about travelling the areas that you are considering;

Close, but no. You have to be 18 to drive on the continent with a UK license.

My dad graduated fro there in 1940 (guess what his first job was ). Go for it and post a link for donations. May I suggest you take a look at the web site http://www.sailmike.com/ I followed his adventure every day when he was sailing. It was very captivating and a great way to raise money. Now keep in mind he did not reach his monetary goal but he generated some interest which is key. Regardless of how difficult the trip is, you must generate interest. Just leaving and arriving home some time later wont generate a lot of interest. A good story every day about where you are and what you have done will get some readers though.

we have hit a small stumbling block, in the form of insurance... I cannot find an insurer who will cover an under 25 year old outside the UK. im trying to find a way around it but it looks as if it could be a dead end.

I believe that you also have to post a bond to take a vehicle into Egypt - can't remember quite how much, but its something like 4 times the vehicles value.
