Hi all,

As part of rebuilding my 10 year old's 109, it has come to the point where we remove the 2 1/4 petrol engine.

He is going to do a complete strip down and rebuild. I do not have a bottomless pit of money... in fact it could be described fairly honestly as a small and shallow puddle.

He is raising money for the project by stripping axles and handbrake assemblies and reconditioning them, selling them off to local landy owners and making ten or twenty quid profit a time. Money that is then spent on car parts.

My question is this. What modifications should I recommend to him as part of the engine rebuild (bear in mind that it runs OK, has no obvious knocking or grinding sounds). He is keen that although we are both brassic... he has until next year's L2B to get it sorted. (he wants us to drive it to brighton for that event.)

All ideas and opinions welcome.

Many thanks

Chris

I wanted to invite anyone who is interested in laning in our area to respond on this thread. Maybe a community could grow on here as well as it has elsewhere.

On an aside... My son compiled this video from a couple of videos taken when a load of us from Herts visited Salisbury last year. (It has a couple of him and his brother doing their variety of laning too.)

He is only 7 but he made me promise to post the link, so here goes!

This is my first post on this forum, so hello to all members.

a bit of help needed on the below issue?

Took my series 2.25 petrol for a run yesterday afternoon after the recent head gasket change and all the over heating problems. The main thing been the over heating problem has been cured, but now another problem is present.

upon starting the series with full choke on, she will eventually fire after repeated attemps, but even with full choke on I have to let it warm up for ten minutes before touching the throttle or it will just die out . Anyway once its warmed up and a few miles down the road the choke can be pushed fully in and it will idle on its own and is ok when driving, the problem is if you just rev gently and slowly, it bogs down and goes to stall followed by a back fire.If you rev hard its fine,, this can be a bit of a nightmare especially in slow moving traffic and when setting off from a stand still, aswell as this problem the fuel consumption is through the roof, the 2.25 petrol isnt good at the best of times but its currently doing around the 9-10 mpg if not less.

Automatically I thought the carburettor was at fault, and took it to bits and cleaned eveything several times to no avail. So urgently needing a soloution to this problem bought a new webber 34ich from paddocks and fitted this evening,, and you've guessed it,, no change what so ever.

Im a bit lossed on what to do next, fuel pump maybe?

Your thoughts and advice is much appreciated yet again

Just to give you a bit more info,

The plugs have changed this evening also, its running a electronic distributor and sports coil, new leads, new fuel filter fitted which came with new carb,Timing has been checked and appears consistent and fine.

Sorry for huge post ,just a bit lossed on where to go next.

Is it that we dont look after own own in this country?? But are always quick to help out when disaster strikes elsewhere in the world.

Watching the events unfold ,it seems to me that a lot of folk up there have either no insurance or are not covered enough ie no contents .Probably due to not being able to afford the extra insurance.

I know that the areas most affected are not full of expensive houses and people who have plenty of money to replace their belongings.

I just hope that the goverment will step in and help ,or set up an appeal so people can donate some cash to ease the difficult times .

I'm a new member, and own a Freelander 1.8 petrol, 53 plate, 30,000 recorded miles.
I like the drive, but have had problems with the gear selection , and rear door leaks into under-floor storeage. Leaks sorted, and gear selection appears to have eased by itself.

Recently I noticed that my coolant level was low, and topped up with 50/50 water and anti-freeze, and thought no more about it. The vehicle was running like a dream, and the running temperature ok. The heater worked well after top-up, but but cooled off after a day or so. Time to top up coolant again. There was no leakage under the car, so the coolant must have been going somewhere. I did notice air bubbles coming up into the expansion bottle.

As my Freelander was due for it's annual service, and MOT, I booked it in. Mentioned the coolant loss, and a rear stop light that needed replacing. Told them no other problems.

I received a call from the Land Rover dealership, and was told that the coolant had been leaking into the engine, and mixing with the oil - engine may have to be replaced! They promised to removed the head, and assess the damage. Next day received another call from the dealer - to replace engine with a new [reconditioned] engine was my only option - my engine was not repairable as they said the "sleeves had dropped into the engine" [whatever that means].

Cost of reconditioned engine £2,300!

This is a very expensive solution for my Freelander coolant problem, and I suggest all owners should keep an eagle eye on the coolant level to avoid the above cost.
My coolant loss was only over a few weeks, but enough to cause irrepairable damage.
