Now that Marc is back from darkest Central Africa it's time for a sundowner again. Next Friday? I'll check with Shirley where her training is and then suggest a venue. Otherwise is the date ok?

Hey!!

Can we make it the thursday? Going to deepest darkest Limpopo on friday! ;)

That brings me to the following:

drumroll

I would like to propose a weekend away to the Waterberg. Thinking of the second weekend in December (7-9) leave on the friday and back on the sunday (we can do longer if people are keen!)
Staying in the tented camp in the middle of the bushveld. I've organized a special rate of R250 pppn (instead of R650!) on a B&B basis, we can do our own meals or eat in the restaurant. Most of you have seen the brochures, but check www.kololo.co.za (http://www.kololo.co.za)

Regards,
Emlyn

I'm going to be somewhere between KZN and the Eastern Cape next week and will only get back around the 30th and Annalet will be in the real darkest Africa (Cape Town, where the brightest light is the glow coming from Koeberg ).

The weekend of 7-9 December at Kololo certainly sounds like a great idea! We're keen!

I have finished making the "Bhumwholly Award", and would like to present it to Emlyn sometime :D

Unfortunately, at this stage I can't commit to the December weekend, but in theory I am very interested. I have a heck of a lot of commitments to still work through this year, but hopefully I'll be able to make the trip. It's really up to my clients... :( the ******s are always getting in the way of my fun. :(

Emlyn sounds great, but Shirley and I over that weekend are going to be in deepest darkest Botswana for our niece's wedding. Sounds like not only a great offer but also a great time. If you can organise again let us know.

Excellent news Emlyn. I have just spoken to Kevin, and he tells me that Mike can make Friday too. Brigid will also be there as well, so Kevin has suggested Gold Diggers around 6pm Friday 26th October. :)

The Gauteng Old Offroad Drivers Landrover Forum (GOODLARF) members will present you with the BhumWholly Award for outstanding achievement in your role as Emlyn the Impatient in "Ha BoomHole: A River Runs Through It" ;)

For anyone who is reading this post and are unaware about the BhumWholly Award, please see the attached photograph for a glimpse at Emlyn's stunning portrayal of a bogged LandRover driver, stuck in a river in Lesotho.

I've just read this thread ..... and I'm homesick!!!! :(

Have a great night guys and we need photos of the award and the occasion. :D

Remind me again - are we talking Botswana or Mozambique for the next 'big one'? And when were we taking, because the heat is going to be a factor.

Would I be able to rent a Land Rover?

Roger. (Am I still a member of the Gauteng Chapter or do I have to do something to renew it?)

It's renewable yearly and you have to be here to renew it :D.

Don't worry. Leave that to the people who look at a row of Landies, shake their heads and say "I'm not sure if that one will make it :eek:".

Defenders can be rented at about £86 per day (R1200). Mike and Margaret (Gemini), who are currently staying at our house, recently shipped their landy out from the UK for about £1200 and will be shipping it back (£800 strange that it's cheaper) in about Feb. Depending on the length of stay do your arithmetic to see which is the better option.

Hmmmm .... its a tough one Kevin. The next question is; will the rental company mind me doing to it what you lot did to your Land Rovers?

Say Hi to Mike and Margaret for me. :)

Top Gear is on as I type and the boys are driving across Botwana in a Lancia Beta 2000 Auto, A Mercedes 250SE and an Opel Kadet from 1962! The are going across some Salt Flats - the biggest in the world? - and are currently stripping the vehicles down to save weight!

Didn't Marc say he and Brigid had driven across this salt desert in his old Landy?

Roger.

We did indeed. :) It's the Makgadikgadi Salt Pans and I loved the trip. We had leopards around or tent one night, and hyaenas circling our campsite on another night.

At certain times of the year it's quite easy to cross, and at other times it's impossible. You have to time your trip quite carefully. :)

I'll look for some photos, and if I find them, I'll post a few. Brigid is in Zambia for the next month, and I'm probably driving up to the Congo soon, so don't hold your breath for photographs though...;)

Hmmm ... I thought you did. They even had the Botswana Prime Minister or the Minister of Something or other on - the one who flies a powered Paraglider  - saying; 'No-one has ever crossed it in a car before.'

Perhaps he meant car - ie; two wheel drive, lightweight? The ground certainly looked difficult. Hard crust on top and a glutinous, damp dough underneath. I don't know what support they had, but sometimes they looked really dug in. They didn't say what time of year it was. At some point the dust clouds were wicked.

Take care in the Congo Marc. :)

Roger.

I'm sure untrained people do a lot worse damage to them than someone who knows landies could possibly do. (Remember release the brake that's all :D )

I will send your regards in the morning.

'No-one has ever crossed it in a car before.'

In the dry season you'd get an ordinary car through (on the known route/s through the pans), so I don't know what the man was talking about. When we went through there it was after the rainy season, so it was muddy, but passable. We DID get horribly bogged one evening, and were rescued the next day by an ordinary 2 x 4 bakkie :D If Mike's SII had been there, we would have been out in a jiffy. :)

That episode has caused much grief in Botswana.

Friends of ours organized the vehicles - FOR FREE - and then Jeremy and Richard had the audacity to request appearance fees for a charity event.

Needless to say that, plus the total disregard for the environment, arrogance etc., has not earned them any new fans in Botswana. Many of their loyal watchers in this part of the world have simply tuned out.

Shortly after the filming (about 4 months ago) BBC was inundated with complaints as well due to the environmental ignoramuses acting out their childhood, irresponsible fantasies at the expense of an African country which they feel is not worth saving.

There is a week's worth of stuff which happened which of course did not make it to TV.

If the forum members from Botswana have cooled down enough, perhaps they can be persuaded to elaborate first hand on the stuff.

I can tell you this, they will likely not be permitted back to Botswana - ever.

If they were acting like Yahoos in the salt pans, then I have completely lost respect for them.

The pans are beautiful and tranquil, and although they will recover from vehicle damage quite quickly, it's just childish to roar around off the paths, ripping up the crust and bu&&ering around.

What it does do, is show people that driving fast, damaging the plants and surface etc. is very pleasurable, and then you end up with F**K-heads driving all over sensitive areas that take HUNDREDS of years to recover.
