To those of you off to Cape Town for the Kingsley Holgate send-off Shirley & I wish you a safe trip; don't want you to be a statistic like the last long weekend. We need LOTS of pics :) .

We'll unfortunately not be there but will be off the Songimvelo Game Reserve doing some bridge building. Presently getting the landy ready, been having a bit of trouble with grease oozing out of the front hub all over the brakes shoes. Doesn't help much with series brakes to have grease on the shoes  . Will post some pics of our adventures too.

Hi Kev and Shirl ;)

I'm currently in NE Angola. I rush home on Friday, get the landy ready, and leave for CT on Monday afternoon.

We always take it easy on the road, and we'll only get to Bloem on Monday night.

Gotta go... I'm hogging the satellite ;)

Hi YUG,

I have your number on my phone, and I'll give your a call...

Thanks very much for the offer, but Kingsley's arranged accomodation for us already.

Over 300 :D That's great news. I hope the weather plays along etc. It'd be FANTASTIC if everyone who registered actually turns up.:). We might have a shot at the Guinness Record if we can just get all the participants to play along, and follow a few basic rules... ;)

I will be back in the office on Friday to clarify a few things, and then get ready to dash off to CT.

We'll see you there? Please find me and introduce yourself. I'll be the ugly, short, bearded, wooly haired ****** with the white GP-plate Kalahari and a two-way radio. ;) I'm sure we'll find a Captain or two to keep us entertained ;)

See you in CT.

Hi Alan,

There's a virtual guarantee of loads of drummers around Landys at the launch. I'll video some of it and post it on YouTube. :)

Cheers,
Marc

Marc, what radio band will you be on?

from what i gather, the meeting place is the cape of good hope beach,i cant see three hundred landies being able to park there! it is only a short stretch of road.Sharon said they may only let a hundred vehicles in to cape point, and the rest will wait outside the gates.

Marc, what radio band will you be on?

Any frequency between DC and Light ;)

The marshals will be using UHF to co-ordinate the day. Kingsley uses VHF so I'll give him a UHF portable for the day too.

I can operate at just about any frequency (if I get my equipment installed properly this weekend)

What do you have? 29MHz? VHF?

The landrover club is still using 27mhz, so i have 27mhz and 29mhz in the discovery,i have always wanted to get VHF but i have been told is difficult to get a license nowdays.

Am not even sure if i will use the disco that day anyway,i have an ex SADF series three shorty, complete with bullet holes from its days in Angola.
But seeing as camping ground is going to be at a premium i think the roof top tent on the disco may be the better option!!

Bring the Series!!!! :)

The SA 4x4 club have a blanket VHF licence for all members AFAIK. I have a Radio Dealers License that allows me to do just about anything I guess ;)

See you in CT.

I hate to admit this... but I've just had to send through an email "unconfirming" my spot in the convoy. There's no way I'm going to get Olivia sorted out in time to do the trip. :(

And now I'm going to go hang my head in shame somewhere. Back to lurking.

Michelle,

Can we make a plan to get you picked up and brought along? I'm sure there's an extra seat somewhere for you.

That may be an option Marc - or I could just spend the entire day actually working on the truck! :)

Come on Marc tow Michelle and thereby add another to the tally :D . Actually I suppose it would be better to tow Michelle's landy.

Hmmm.... think I'd better bite my tongue on this one!

YUG - I'm using this weekend for Landy-work. Got my AutoZone shopping list handy, a few pages of to-do's from the mundane (clean off half of Africa from in/on/under) to the complicated (everything else), and will take it from there! Once Olivia's sorted, it's the Ford's turn...

I'll go invest in some black nail polish to hide the ingrained grease in the meantime.

Appreciate the offer - unfortunately this one had to be a pass... Hope you'll post some pics and a report-back when you have time? If Marc doesn't beat you to it... ;)

Here's a quick report...

The weather was crappy. Cold, wet, misty etc.

We expected a low turnout, but the day before Kingsley sent e-mails to everyone who registered saying something to the effect of "The weather's lousy, but Landy ownders aren't wussies"

We counted 327 vehicles entering the reserve. What a sight!

The procession left the reserve at about 11am, and wound it's way towards Cape Town. We did two measured distances (one at Kommetjie, and one on Chapman's Peak Drive) to see if we could set a new Guinness World record. The current record is 260 vehicles in an unbroken convoy.

I think we did it! Of course, we have to wait for ratification from Guinness, but my feeling is that we did comply with the rules, and the record should be valid. The preliminary number that we have is 347 (a few vehicles joined in outside the reserve), so we may have improved the record by 87 vehicles.

I can't post photos or videos untile I get back to Johannesburg, but I'll definitely be posting when I get back.

The feeling was absolutely amazing!!! I have video footage of every single vehicle in the convoy. At one stage the convoy was over 6km long and stretched all the way from the top of Chapman's Peak to the toll booth at the bottom.

I didn't get to meet YUG unfortunately. If you're around YUG, you're welcome to come around to where we're staying in Sea Point (the team is preparing the vehicles for the real departure tomorrow, and I'm installing radios.) and say hello to the team if you'd like.

Sorry, I can't say where we are, but we really can't have loads of people around here, because we have lots of work to do. But if you call me 082 497-4581, I can tell you where we are.

Cheers,
Marc
