ROUTE UPDATES

U5051 and U5052 Parkamoor (December 2002): Discretionary Traffic Regulation Order

A Traffic Regulation Order (TRO) came into affect on parts of the above routes on 11th September 2000. The affected sections are:

1. The U5051 from High Nibthwaite (grid reference SD 294897) to its junction with the U5052
(grid reference SD 313925). This is a discretionary TRO.

2. The U5051 from its junction with the U5052 (SD 313925) to its junction with the U5053 (SD 318929). This is a permanent TRO.

3. The U5052 from its junction with the U5051 (SD 313925) to its junction with the U5053 (SD 324923). This is a discretionary TRO (Click on attached map for details).

These sections will be closed to all motor vehicles (except for access to buildings or premises adjacent to the roads). The discretionary TRO is in force when the TRO signs are displayed. The signs are located at High Nibthwaite and the junctions of the U5051/ U5053 and the U5052/ U5053. When the signs are displayed the only routes open for recreational vehicles will be the U5051 from Grizedale south-west to its junction with the U5053, the U5053 south-east to its junction with the U5052 and the U5052 eastwards to Satterthwaite.

There is a presumption that the discretionary TRO will be enforced from 1st November to 30th April each year. This means the U5051 and U5052 could be open from 1st May to 1st October each year. However the roads will also be opened and closed if certain weather conditions dictate i.e. closed in summer in persistent wet conditions and open in winter in prolonged cold/ snowy conditions. A new system of monitoring the TRO is to start in September 2002. A local trail rider from Satterthwaite will ride the route once a month and his decision, once ratified by the NPA Ranger and/ or Trails Management Officer, will stand for that month. Any changes to the TRO will be posted on this website and at Grizedale Visitor Centre.

THE U5051 WAS INSPECTED ON 2ND SEPTEMBER. THE ASSESSMENT IS THAT THE ROUTE WILL REMAIN OPEN FOR THE NEXT MONTH. THE ROUTE IS DRY. SECTIONS OF THE U5052 TO SEVEN WELLS ARE STILL BOGGY BUT PASSABLE WITH CARE. THIS SECTION IS BECOMING INCREASINGLY RUTTED AND SHOULD BE AVOIDED IN WET WEATHER. IF EARLY SEPTEMBER IS WET PLEASE AVOID THIS SECTION. ALL VEHICULAR USERS SHOULD COMPLY WITH THE ON-SITE SIGNS.

In addition, the section of U5051 numbered (2) above and the whole of the U5053 have been moved by a dedication agreement between the Forestry Commission and Cumbria County Council. This has moved these routes on to the more sustainable adjacent forest roads. Cumbria County Council is to implement a permanent TRO for mechanically propelled vehicles on this section of the U5051. TRO signs should be erected in January 2003.

U5257 Gatescarth Pass (December 2002): Temporary and Experimental Traffic Regulation Orders

The National Park Authority (NPA) completed a major programme of drainage and surfacing work on the northern (Mardale) side of this route in November 2000. The badly eroded upper section of the route on the Longsleddale side of the Pass was also repaired in February and March 2002. The work included re-surfacing 1 kilometre of track, repairing drainage features such as culverts and ditches and seeding and fertilising the surface to encourage a consistent grass cover. The work cost £13000 and has to be safeguarded against damage by both users and the weather. Therefore a temporary Traffic Regulation Order (TRO) has been enforced which prohibits all recreational motor vehicles.This TRO has run for 12 months and has been extended by a further 3 months until 4th May 2003. This extension was granted by the Government Office of the North West and is being implemented to prevent damage to the road . Locked gates are at Mardale Head and Brownhowe Bottom to prevent vehicular access (points A and B on attached map). Alternative access arrangements have been made for other users.
