Well I've been a bit busy at work, change of Departments, with a whole pile of studying to do as well. Just had a drive through to Embra and collected my nice new shiny TruckAir compressor from graemeelliott [Top bloke - and all sale proceeds going to McMillan charity], and had a wee blether with some of the other SORC gang, discussing this weekends spanner party.
Bunch of mates getting together for a weekend of fun & hilarity doing a chassis & bulkhead swap / tea party.

Natuarally I would offer to help but I am nightshift this weekend, but I may still pop over and offer some kind words of encouragement [ round about tea & cake time!!]

Teammud are hovering just below the £5000 mark, someone has agreed to take one of the holidays tho so when we get payment for that we're well over 5k.

Scuba getting everyone else to build his 110 then? Might nip out for a bit of spectating!

Top plan! Bring some biccies and a couple of Buffs, then extol the virtues of how Oil, Dirt, Paint & Burn proof they are  , then explain to Scuba & Bob how warm they are as well, as they crawl around in the cool Embra afternoon air, chasing bolts around the garage floor :D :D

Not detracting in any way from the forum we have here, but a more local place for the peeps of the north to check in and help organise local events etc with the intention to help out local charities etc with any funds that we can raise locally.

all suggestions welcome.............more to follow when i launch the new site in the near future.

After all that's what the Scotland section is for :D

Aww Hubber, i didnt plan on starting a new forum, and all information will be posted on and around the forum as per usual, but i think that a new site for the north east dudes might be a way to better organise and plan events locally for the future. If in some way it can also bring benefit to local charities then i think it can only be a good thing.

Well done Charlie!!!

Hazard perception..65%... ..did you miss the granny with the out of date bus pass and the drunk trying to get out the emergency exit?..lol

I presume you had to sit infront of a screen and press the button when a "hazard" appeared??

charliedenny
21st Feb 2007, 10:43
yep and the screen is only a forward view no peripheral vision at all!!
most drivers get around the same!

Backs4more
21st Feb 2007, 12:02
When I sat my exam the examiner said I failed  he explained I hit the button far too much and was over cautious! I asked him to run through it again and sit with me and explain what I was doing wrong.

First one was I saw a manhole cover on a bend, so I hit the button. His response was, "What are you doing???" I said the manhole cover was a hazard..his reply.."Hardly!" I then asked if he had ever had to ride a motorcycle over a wet manhole cover, or one that was slightly raised or one that was sunk into the road....this went on for lots of other hazards I saw and he didnt...

In the end I got 70 something percent with a lot of arguing..:D :D

As you say, no side or rear vision, the image is pretty ropey and the system is designed for car drivers so a hazard to a bike or large vehicle like a bus or HGV (parked cars resticting width etc) may not be picked up as a hazard by the system.

charliedenny
21st Feb 2007, 12:13

Huey has taken his P38 Rangie around bits of it on standard road tyres...no damage, no problems and a jet wash sorts it out afterwards!! :)

Seen brand new Disco 3's, newsih Rangies, Rangie Sports and Freelanders do the lower course..again, no problem. Your rangie will probably get to the upper section too if you stick to the main tracks, nothing too demanding really...unless you want it to be :)

See if one of the lads will take you round in a Landy first to let you see. I would, but my two are being repaired just now (nowt to do with Nortrak I might add..lol)

That sounds quite reassuring. :) I guess i wouldn't be too bothered about getting dirty, its the potential for damage. A ride round in a Landy would be ideal although reckon if i got there i'd end up going round in the Rangie!

Roo,
My first trip there was with a 110 station wagon. I was a bit worried about taking it round but steve sat with me and talked me round the course. After an hour he left me too it.

I was hooked. I ordered mud terrain tyres the following week...went to pick them up but came back not only with tyres, but a 90 as well, purely for offroading.

Hah...........thats so totally untrue, me and my faithful side kick Marc AKA Iva Dirty one, were out in the garage today reconstructing my rear diff. Not reccomeneded for the average home diyer i can tell you, but now accomplished successfully or so it seems for the moment. Feeling quite chuffed about this one. Diff is now noise free and the clunk taking up the drive is reduced to a fraction of what it was.

I'm gonna look at fitting my sidesteps. Might have to do a bit of modding as the sideskirts look like there gonna foul them. Other than that, i'm DIY'ing in the house.

SLeeping, chance would be a fine thing ... :D Just worked out, I spent 8 hours behind the wheel of the landie today :yay: with the trailer in tow ... Now that's a good way to spend a Saturday.

Did a wee tour of the central belt dropping off bits and pieces ... low point was finding J1 of the M9 closed trying to get to Kirknewton. Tried my best to follow the diversion signs but ended up on a sort of mystery tour of Edinburgh, twas only when I saw signs for Berwick on Tweed I thought maybe I had joined in someone else's diversion by mistake ... :D

And isn't it funny how, once your fuel gauge goes into the red, all the garages just seem to vanish into thin air ...

Busy day for me today too............. Banished Lucas the prince of darkness back to purgatory, or in other words fixed me lights!!.........traced the fault to the fusible link on the osf inner wing just back from the battery, turns out that landrover in their wisdom wrapped that part of the wiring loom in a cloth sheath to soak up the water and corrode the connection for the the main instrument and lighting feed.........twats!!!. Never mind all srted now with a block connector and re sheathed in half a rool of insulation tape. dont think ill have to fix that one again.

Next.....................lol

So what wonderful plans are happening this weekend;)

Well Mrs M and I "emigrated" to Sheffield early on Saturday morning to look at a car that was for sale, didn't buy it, drove up to York and met up with some old friends, had a slap up meal washed down with some warm beer ;) ;) and slept it off in a posh hotel. Woke up this morning had a long leisurely walk around the centre of York, light lunch, and then drove home, getting back just in time for Tea, and the Mother in law returning the dog.

Spent most of the day 'phoning round certain High Street retailers chasing up 3-pce suites, and fireplaces. I'm sorely tempted to go buy a tent and live like a gipsy, must be easier than all this modern living/makeover malarkey. Cannot understand why La Smillie and the like can do a TV show in two days where they transform some dishevelled hovel into a palace and never break sweat  . Must be a trick somewhere, we ordered the suite in NOVEMBER, and the chuffin' fireplace takes 4 weeks to get from Hillington to Carluke!!!

On a happier note, I am heading to the local machine shop tomorrow to try for the 4th time to try and get my new alloy winch fairlead made up. I needed a custom made one for my Aeroparts winch, and so took careful measurements, made a scale drawing and went to said engineer, we agreed a price for parts and labour, which would be reduced by £5.00 :) if I went and collected the material mesel, thereby saving the engineer from going specially to collect it. £20.00 worth of shiny alloy bar later I return, and hand it to him, agree to call back in 3 days when he has done the job.
Call back 4 days later to find him frantically skimming down another piece of bar - turns out he goofed on his CNC holes and practically cut my bar in half  so has to cut up another piece of stock, and start again.

I return 4 days later to find that again he has 'ukked up on the CNC holes and this time cut a nice slot in the middle, and drilled four nice mounting holes in each corner, however when he set the machine to counterbore these holes, he forgot the command to tell it to lift the cutter out the job between holes - result an interesting gouge between 2 holes on one end of the bar.

Another 2 day pass while the bar goes to local Tig wizard to have the gouge filled in and the holes re-machined :( .

Finally get the shiny new bar home and place it aginst the winch to find that he has goofed again - this time taking my measurement for the overall length of the slot as the distance between centres of the stroke for the circular cutter - result one carefully machined and polished slot 22mm too chuffin' wide :o

Reckon I may just go to the workshop tomorrow and deposit said bar somewhere the sun doesn't shine  .

I haven't the courage to go searching elsewhere! My V5 turned up yesterday so at least it now officially mine. My experience with MRM could have easily put me off the RR, I'm just glad most of the faults so far have been easily fixed by my brother and/or me and nothing major has (so far) came to light although the fuel smell has me slightly worried...

Sandy M: If you get stuck with getting your part machined, I may be able to help you out.

Probably, but hopefully not, the fuel pipes are rotten, where they enter the tank. Replacement pipes are not available AFAIK - you have to buy a complete pump unit :( . Fingers crossed for you.

Thanks for the offer of the engineering, but I will persevere with the company - they have done good work in the past, and I hope they will see the error of their ways, however 3 x £20.00 worth of bar to get one good job, may be stretching their patience.

A trip to Tarkie sounds like a plan. Im am just hoping the SD1 is a winner just a little luck with her and we should be cool. I must say it was not as simple as I had hoped. The bellhousing bolts were just a cow to get at anyway she is in. I didnt take sump off as yet, mine is very bent but its not leaking so just want to get her running before spending anymore time on other bits. I will take note when I remove the old one mate. Went to Town & County Land Rover yesterday to pick up the paint touch-up stick i'd ordered. Whilst I was there I asked if they could check if there were any recalls for the RRC. Turns out mine had a fuel tank recall years ago and its yet to be done. Its booked in for a look over next wednesday and then they'll advise from there. Would the recall still be a free fix after all this time?

Today was mainly spent whining like an inured puppy and grovelling to SWMBO, alas to no avail, she has refused permission to expand the fleet :( . Next call was to the machine shop to check on the progress of my hawse fairlead -it was very shiny, but still too much like a chunk of stock alloy bar - the chap reckons that he should start on the Mk4 version tomorrow and I should get it on Thursday morning :) .

Next call was to drop off the starter motor for the racer, with the local sparky chaps. The starter started stopping last week while checking the car over, and with the next safari only 12 days away, I did not fancy the prospect of an unreliable starter to compromise the days fun [plus ye cannae easily push start an Auto]

I'm now in New Zealand so reading all these messages when it's the middle of the night UK time!

Missing Landies in general....:(

Amazing out here though! Quite a few series 1 Landies and early 70's Rangies about!

Incredible what can survive when the climate is a bit nicer and the council don't salt the roads!

Charlie, Stoney, and the area as close to Aberdoom are quite expensive and down here in Laurencekirk you get a 45 minute commute either way Dundee or Doom. So don't rule out property a little further south, I think there is a house for sale near Kinneff that needs renovation over looking the sea. I'll try and find out a little more.

Hi all.

My partner Annette and I will be at the Greenside Car Park (East side of Edinburgh) car boot sale tomorrow, Sunday 18th.
All proceeds we make are going to Macmillan Cancer Support. So if anyone is in Edinburgh tomorrow morning why not pop in to say hello and possibly pick up a bargain for a good cause. Opens to buyers at 09:00.

I know it's short notice but we just received the fund raising pack from Macmillan this morning.

Cheers.

My Sandy now that is very cruel but hey I like your style man.

Mark is that not unbeliveable you have waited all that time for your motor and you got Flu nightmare.

And Roo I think you motor was in for a recall? was going to say if you need work done on it there are two very good independant garages in the area. I certainly would not hesitate in recomending them.

And well my day is decorating and just getting the little DIY jobs done that have been just waiting to be done.
Fit an electric fan in the car later, now got new seats and a snorkel to fit to.

Regards

Yes, recall day tomorrow. Its only in for a check though, to see whats needed. I'm not quite sure why they need to check really as they already know the recall hasn't been carried out.

Rest assured if it needs anything other than the recall components it will be getting done myself or by an independant (you cant beat a recommended independant IMO), not the main stealer!

Not too bad actually, apparently the faster you travel over the washboard sections, the smoother the ride. All in all we had a great day, and grateful thanks to all the Marshalls, setter uppers, and spectators who turned up to stand on top of a windswept bing, under a grey sky to let all the competitors have a bit of a larf.
