View Full Version : Trailer wanted - buy/borrow/hire
I am getting together the parts needed to convert my LWB SIII from a 2.25 petrol to a Montego (Prima) diesel (see thread on the SIII board).
I have found two (yes 2) Montego turbo diesel estate’s, which will provide the donor engine, plus a spare. Now I need to work out how to recover them, I live in Essex and the cars are in the North East.
When I collected "Erin", the SIII, I hired a trailer from a company in East Sussex. This was a pain but I just managed to do the whole thing in a day and return the trailer (by 10 in the evening) but that’s going the wrong way this time, so anyone know where I can buy, borrow or hire very cheaply a trailer in or around Essex to take a Montego estate.
By the way just to answer that question your now asking yourself about two cars and one journey, I intend to remove the engine and ancillaries from one Montego Estate and put it in the boot of the other to get home (neat trick I know).
Hope that I can get some help or advice here as I need to do this in the next few weeks.
Regards
David

Have you tried Indespension, they do special long term rates, like if you hire the trailer for the weekend, you pay £50, instead of £30 per day.
http://www.indespension.co.uk/trailers.htm
Worth calling them and chatting to your local depot, not sure though how close that would be.
Hope it is of help.
Many thanks, my nearest depot is Ipswich which is only 45 minutes away and almost in the right direction so I'll try them.
Thanks again, and if anyone else has any ideas please let me know.

I can't help with the trailer 'cause I'm in the wrong place. Just a word of caution though, if you put the engine etc in the back of the Montego on the trailer you may well throw the loading out. Better to put it on the front of the trailer itself.
Sorry to sound like a smart ****, but I wouldn't like to think you were going to have problems when towing.:p

Well the answer to the engine in the boot and balancing the trailer, you put the engine in the boot first, winch it onto the trailer and balance it out, should work.
Just amke sure you have enough weight on the front, but not too much.
I have seen somewhere recently an article or forum thread that tells you how to load a trailer. As too much weight at the front would over load the hitch, and make it bounce the towing vehicle, that is bring the front wheels off the ground, and too much weight at the back makes the trailer bounce and then swing all over the place.
What are you going to use to tow it all?
If it is a Land Rover, would the engine go in the back of that?
Would be better than on the trailer or in the back of the Montego.

Yeah, sorry about that. I've just re-read my post and it's as clear as mud. Who would guess I make a living writing manuals :buck:
Anyway, like Lighting said :p
Thanks for all the advice.
I do tow regularly so am very aware of getting the balance right. Came back from Weymouth the other week having let someone else load a double stack trailer witha 4.5M RIB on the bottom and sailing dinghy on top, his boats, and the tow was a bit of a problem.
I intend to use a 4 wheel trailer with brakes and tow behind my normal towing car, the company Mondeo estate (cheaper than using the Land Rover for the journey and any way I have not been that far in it yet so dont want to push it).
I know the recomendation is tow no more than 80% of the kerbside weight of the towing vehicle, so I though about the second engine in the back of the tow car. The Mondeo being heavier than the Montego anyway.
I used the Mondeo to recover "Erin" when I bought her, with a 4 wheel trailer and being light on the gas and breaks it did the job OK
Please keep sending the comments and advice.
By the way I have found a few different adaptors for this engine, anyone have any recomendations as they vary greatly in price.

Try doing a search of the forum for advice ont he engine, click on the search button at the top, and just try Prima, and see what you get. I know I have seen a few threads myself before.
Tow is like all things, I have grown up usinf tractors to tow things, so loading trailers etc is second nature to a point.
The trailer I got from Indespension was a four wheel trailer, I hired the car transport trailer which is rated to two ton, and cost £80 for three days, picked up Friday morning, returned back Monday morning.
