Four days in the Waterberg; wish it were four weeks. I love the bush veld. The thick bush, the crushing heat, the smells that grab at you: sweet from trees in blossom; sour from decaying foliage; acrid from hyena lairs; dusty air attacking your breathing yet making you seek more; intense smells that really strike you from all sides. Even if I didn't see an animal (which is nigh impossible) just being out there restores the soul. There is something about the area that makes a person want to return as often as possible. There is an intensity also in the colours. They are not the colours of the suburbs. They are colours of harshness that matches the brutality that is nature yet with a subtleness that pleases the eye. Then there are the sounds of the bush. The symphonic birds, the cacophony of the cicada beetles, the rustling of small animals in the leaves, the jackals howling at sunset: the sounds just go on and on. Even the nights are not still, yet they are peaceful.

I WANT to go back!!!

Some pics to share. (Only have a basic point and shoot digital but hope they catch the essence of the area.)

The white rhinos in the pic found the grass by the campsite to be the tastiest. They were about twenty metres from the tents.

The happy driver, well what can I say, driving a series landy always puts a smile on your face
