Does anyone ever take their Landy across to South Africa or vice versa?
What kind of cost would you be looking at? I imagine you'd be better off renting over there but you never know I suppose...

JamesF also shipped his Landy around the place. IIRC it was from West Africa to South Africa, but he might have some good tips etc.

Shipping from Cape Town back to the UK cost in total around 1600-1700 GBP. That includes agents fees at both ends. Shipping from West Africa (Ghana) to Durban cost a little less as the agents fees in Ghana were a lower. Generally we found agants fees/customs etc. to be around 500 GBP at each port and actual shipping to be aound 6-700 GBP. Added to this is insurance.

As to whether its worth shipping over renting is all a question of time. The longer you stay the more cost effecvitve shipping becomes. You also need to decide on a vehicle as renting Land Rovers seems to be more expensive than Toyotas. A guy from one of the other forums ships to Walvis Bay in Namibia. From my experience and research the longer shipping routes dont necessarily cost much more than the shorter ones. Don't forget to factor in time for the actual shipping bit, it took us nearly a day to pack the Landy in Ghana whereas in Cape Town it took about an hour. Also worth bearing in mind is how long you are happy to be without the Landy, ours didnt arrive back in the UK til 8 weeks after it left Cape Town.

We used John Good, agents for MAC shipping. They were very helpful and also recommended agents overseas to save us hunting around.

One further thought, dont forget to factor the cost of a Carnet into the equation and the time involved in getting and discharging it.
