Some pics of a game drive we did on a lodge close to Windhoek...

Those are white rhinos, and also a sable bull.

Geo,

you get "white" and "black" rhinos. No racism, as both are grey. It apparently comes from a bad translation, as the one is the "wide - mouthed rhino" (eats grass), like these, and the other one must therefore be "black" (it actually has pointed lips, eats leaves, is smaller and more aggro)...

Tongue in cheek, figured as much.

They are beauties. And the interesting thing is that those people who believe in the aphrodisiac qualities of the horn could also go to a hairdresser's salon in, for instance, JAPAN, pick up the human hair there on the floor and ground that imto a paste as that is exactly the same material that rhino horn is made up of... And the horn grows back if you cut it off, so there is NO reason at all to shoot the animal just for its horn!

Nice pics. Sable has to be my favourite animal.

Looks like it was pretty cold or was it just early in the day?

Obviously, a grazing rhino (head down while eating) is a white rhino, and a browzing rhino (eating from trees) is a black rhino.

Also, one of the rhinos always walks in front of the babies, and the other one always walks behind the babies. The trouble is that I can never remember which is which. :D

Lovely photo of the sables Frank.

Fantastic pics. I'm jealous! On the subject of the rhinos, I knew what you were saying about the horn growing back but could you tell me, which of the species has two horns and which the single? I've always been curious...

Interestingly, as they are completely different species, the Black and White Rhino of Africa both have two horns. IIRC the White Rhino has a more pronounced and sturdier rear horn in relation to the front horn.

Of course, the horns aren't made of horn at all, but are actually compressed hair.

Thought for the day: If rhino horn is an afrodisiac, why is it so difficult to get rhinos to mate?

Cool, thanks for the info Marc. By the way, Madoobri (Alan) let me see some of that dvd you made. I think it's great. Let me know if there's anything I can do to help support the Malaria prevention from over this side of the world...

Hi James,

I'm glad that you found the DVD interesting. I'm hoping that Ross finishes the full edit of the expedition documentary soon.

It's great to hear that you'd like to support the anti malaria campaign. If you'd like to make a financial contribution, you are more than welcome to contact Kingsley directly at explore@africanrainbowexpedition.co.za or you can contact me directly, and I'll make sure your funds get to the right place.

If you're thinking of support in a physical form rather than money, then please let me know, and we can discuss options.

Cheers,
Marc
