Hello All:

So like myself you probably been doing the various sites and the infamous ebay (UK) and (US) looking for the Landy of your dreams. Snag is, if you don't have buckets of cash the US is out of pocket for the regular working person, which leaves the jolly old UK if you want one. Normally thats where it ends, you this side of the pond - object of desire t'other. So whats to be done about it? Well you could do what I did and import one into Canada. Yes you read it right, bring one over. Who the heck does that, to almost quote my wife. Me, because thats about the only way I could afford or get a Defender 200 tdi. Now I have never done such like before and needless to say don't have buckets of cash to throw around, so I did my homework and found it a piece of cake - provided you do your homework and have documentation!

How's it Done - Like So:

1. The Landy you want must be 15 years or older (25 or older to the US by the way)e.g. if its June 2006 today then your UK registration document (V5) must have a date of first registation on or before May 1991.

2. Call the ministry of transportation to confirm that it is allowed into Canada, there's a 1 800 number and their web site is usefull.

3. Find your Landy, get it as mechanically good as you can afford and in roadworthy condition. Get all your stuff done in the Uk as parts are vastly cheaper and readly available and most mechanics have worked on one a time or two... or three. e.g. I got mine changed to LHD, roof rack etc. It does cost money but will cost tons more even if can find the stuff over here. If you possibly can, go see what your buying or at least have a person you can trust and who is mechanically competant to oversee on your behalf. We are talking money here, and as its your money you should carefull.

4. Make sure that the numbers on the registration (V5) and on the vehicle data plate match exactly.one number wrong or missed and your sunk.

5. Bill of sale. must have date, your name and address, seller (owner-registered keeper)name and address, make, model, vin number (make sure number it matches) year of manufacture, sale price in pounds and weather or not air conditioning is fitted - even if its not working. Fill out block 6 and 8 (change of keeper) of V5. (You must keep hold of this V5 document) and either send the section 11 (notification of permanent export) to the DVLA or get one over the counter at one of there offices.

6. Get the Landy Steam cleaned to remove all biological contaminants,Get paperwork the say its done and tape a copy to the inside of the windsceen, and you keep a copy.

7. Find a shipper and arrange to get your new purchase there. The cheapest way to come across the pond is by RoRo (roll on roll off ferry) about half the cost of a container to Ontario (my place). I went with Wallenius Wilhelmson in southamton shipping to Halifax N.S. for around $1850 CAD. They were excellent on both sides of the pond. They do need to see your paperwork and have offices in halifax if you need to talk, and take payment here which saves transfers.I did not need a Broker. (RoRo is also a good reason for the landy to be roadworthy)

8. Get confirmation from shipper that your Landy is now in Halifax (or where ever its gone to) and send the money (needs a couple of days to clear)

9. Get release paperwork from shipper with stamp on it - mine said clear free of contaminants - Landy got checked by Gov inspector.

10. Present all paperwork to Canada Customs - they check all numbers match, look at V5 reg, look at shippers paperwork, export doc, bill of sale. They issue you a Form1 and must stamp top and bottom. You pay duty and GST calulated on the exchange rate at date of sale. (they look it up in a book) keep hold of the reciept. You pay extra duty if air conditioning is fitted.

11. Pick up your Landy at the compound after showing your paperwork. If you are not going to trailer it home, to drive it, you will need a trip permit-beware not good for interprovince I'm told - I got the use of a dealer plate so drove back to Ontario on that.

12. Get vehicle safety and emmissions done.

13. Take safety, emmissons, Insurance, Form1, V5 and customs duty paperwork to vehicle licencing office. Pay PST on sale price and usual plate/sticker cost and get new ownership.

14. Leave the Landy at home and go for a well deserved pint!

That is the way it went for me, So please do your homework in case rules have changed as I can't be resonsible for that or stuff that I forgot, although I can assure you that as far as I remember thats exactly the way it went when I imported my Defender. Hope this is of help to those who ever got the urge and is of insight to those who have not!

Regards,

misterh.

You paid duty and GST on a >15 year old import?
I've imported 5 vehicles in the last 2 years and never been charged a penny of duties or GST.........weird!
Just walked into the local CCRA office with all my V5's, and walked out again 30min later with 5 K22's.
Got insurance, out of province inspection, and registered them.
Easy peasy!

That would have saved me well over a grand in duty and GST. Got any fine print that says you shouldn't cough up, Halifax customs may need to be enlightend to the fact and I'll be a grand less poor!

Thinking of going back to the UK next year and getting some supplies together to ship back. Did the company you use have different sized containers and do they ship anywhere in Canada.

And yes there will be room for you Swag:rolleyes: .

Just got back from customs at Calgary.
According to them, if it's over 15 years old there's no duty owed.
If there's no duty, there's no GST.
Although if the vehicle transits the US on it's way into Canada duty and GST are owed.........weird!

How much did you value it at with customs? Not the value in Canada I hope.
I used the UK value which translated to C$2000. Maybe there's a lower cut-off point.

I talked with Canada Customs today, looks like Calgary got it backwards.usually no duty if origination was in the states or Canada, otherwise cough up. (6.1% + GST). You can get away with some of it if your a landed immi and have it listed as goods to follow.:(
I didn't mention you other than as member of the same internet group, so there should be no one knocking on your door at 3am.
Thanks for checking it out for me anyway-it was good while it lasted!

I am a dirty stinking immi.. ...! Another advantage I had was bringing them into Canada without Customs ever getting their mitts on them. I s'pose they have you over a barrel when you've got to pay what they ask before they'll release the vehicle.
I had them parked at home, then took the paperwork to Customs to get a Form 1 for each. I used the UK registration as proof of ownership. They never even looked at the vehicles. In fact the Form 1 for my Series1 had the wrong chassis number on it. Only realised when I started the process of registering it.
That's why I was in Calgary the yesterday. Drove the Series1 all the way there, expecting they'd probably want to see it this time, and they just wrote me out a replacement Form 1 with the correct chassis number.
Maybe it's the red-neck Alberta way of doing things!

Yes we shouldn't encourage our valiant customs collectors as my home town compatriot, Robin Hood might have said. However I did disguise my voice and wear a false beard while on the phone - just in case!:D
