It was great to see you all today, Matt (+son), Gez, DaveD, Paul and Sam! Good days work too and a lot of fun had too!

Think Sam (aka SyncroSam) is about to post his pics up so old on for them!

Sam owns a really rather nice VW Syncro camper van, for those of you who have bever heard of one of these it is VWs 4x4 van and is a super bit of kit! As standard it comes fitted with diff lockers on both front and rear axles which makes it an awesome vehicle! Put it like this it went everywhere we went today and with ease too!

We stuck in a new track which involved alot of prunning, winching, towing, waffle, difflocking and chainsaw action, I have sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo many scratches over my fore arms and by gaud they sting like heck!

Unfortunately I do not have a camera at the moment so am relying on others to get their pictures re-sized and posted!!! ;) get a move on you lot!!! :D

Onwards...

Well the weather forecast looks to be pretty good - Weather (http://www.bbc.co.uk/weather/5day.shtml) - so I would suggest that maybe starting the day by trying to set out the "top of the hill site" then if time head down to the forest!

What do you lot reckon?

Matt I have your can of marker paint by the way! Also if you want to set out the upper site I would suggest getting some sort of marker flags/pegs so a course can be followed! Either bamboo canes with yellow dusters or pegs with painted tops, I would suggest that to start with the bamboo is easier and cheaper!

We will also need at least one chainsaw from the begining, makes things progress much easier!

If you lot do not think the upper site is a priority then I would suggest either heading down the track we went up last sunday or trying to link the downwards part of it to the track the rangies stuck in 2 weeks ago! There will be bridge building involved in that one, logs and stuff!

DavejDavies
12th Apr 2006, 00:13
I'd like a quick spin to the top if it's dry, imagine tracks would soon sort out the route but some areas might needs signs - BEWARE OF THE CLIFF  etc

Down in the woods I'd like to go down the RRC route and link across to last Sunday's track for the return up? Be good to see if Peter has been down any tracks with the machine removing stumps?

Be interesting to see if some of those big logs from last week could be used across the track in the real soft areas - we know Eva is good at pulling them around and with a chainsaw any convenient windfall could also purhaps be used?

All sounds good to me ..... We can figure it out when we get there.Unless Matt and Co Have other plans.... Im easy either way..Have they removed the fench into the tank course yet??? Im also interested in seeing the route beyond the pallets.(the route peter told us about). There just isnt enough Hours in a day:)rockCrawling, opening up the perimeter, Bridge building all good stuff...See you All sat morning then..

If we are to link betweent he down track of last week to the RRC track of the week before I think we will have to chop at least one tree to get through and cross at least one ditch. It might be that the ditch is crossable without building a bridge, we'll see, good fun to try tho! :D

Yes They will fit with your original Shocks (just get longer ones when they need replacing)and because you havnt got the Extra Weight of a winch up front the springs wont be too soft.

A Great mod for the disco if you can afford it is the front bumper
1. Its known for getting a hammering
2.Gives a much better approach angle
3.Looks chunky as f*%k
4.And you can put the original stuff back on when you come to sell.

LOL :D :D

follow the A55 over the Britania bridge.

Take the second left off the bridge, do NOT continue along the A55

Turn right heading for Benllech and Amlwch.

Continue through Benllech. (Caution, Benllech is a camera van favourite, drive with care)

Approx 3 to 4 miles out of Benllech you will come to Brynrefail, it is a fairly small sign so keep those eyes peeled.

Turn left after the sign and BEFORE the white gift shop on your left (also known as the old post office)

follow this road for a mile or so and you will come to an even smaller sign on your left saying 'Pen Parc' take this left turn.

Follow this track and when you see the T34 (big Russian tank), you've arrived

If you are after 10 - 1030 and we aren't there take the track by the tank down into the forest

Will email you as well

Nah load of crap RE: towing! all you need is an adjustable hitch, which you already have!!

Yes CofG is raised but with longer shocks it is actually lowered too because the axle and wheels are frr to move downwards! If you'd had a 2" lift on the steps you wouldn't have rolled!

I did pull in for air, at the time thats what I thought the problem may have been. I think it may be the track rod end joint, shouldnt be to tricky to change I just need to get hold of one. I havent looked at it today yet, feelin a bit full of cold so cant be bothered.

ARRR Jon you should have given us a bell mate ,could have helped. the most common problem is a bent track arm(tube running between the wheels with a ball joint on either end and i think on the discos the steering damper)its easy to take off and straighten to get you home ...Ball joints from paddocks are around £6

Well it looks like you had yet another good day, all your hard work is appreciated, i'm sorry i wasn't available to help today, we were too busy knackering the tank. the injector pump coupling has decided it wanted to kill itself and it doesn't look like a straightforward fix.

here (http://s39.photobucket.com/albums/e153/rayvon5/) are the pictures you requested geo, sorry they're a bit late.

Next week is open, you are free to come on which ever day suits you best as we are on site both days, for the braver drivers, you can stop over if you like, we might even kit you out and let you have crack at airsoft in the evening (before the alcohol is let loose). Food, Booze and a good laugh are the order of the evening.

Remember this, next week is chargeable. £23.50 is the damage, we've done our best to hold off for as long as possible, likewise we've done our best to keep the price as low as possible. because you're paying there is no commitment to do any graft, come down, PAY AND PLAY.

If you do decide you want to stay over and do both days the price will be £35, a saving of £12 for two days off roading.

Something i've forgotten to mention for about a month now is, Peter (the landowner) has requested that all vehicles drive off center on the main tracks to ensure even wear. this does not apply to the off road courses, just the hardcore tracks. Thanks.

Well, been told the tyre is unrepairable so just ordered 4 new 265/75 Machos from http://www.uptotheaxles.com/ - they came in £50 cheaper than Sowden, to be fair part of the saving is I am collecting but as they are based in Corwen just a few miles from the Wayfarer it's not a trip that will be wasted :D :D :D

Should have them in for next weekend and then I can go try them. Fingers crossed as I have no spare for the week  Going to keep my 2 good Rangemasters as spares, will start carrying 2 when off-roading. Had to order wheels as well to take the increased width - I blame you and Geo - the floatation in the woods in the last few weeks has been impressive.

Im sure thats where Sam got his from ....cant wait to see them ..damn there going to be chunky when do you get them ????? I think its a wise idea to get the wheels !! standard rims are just a little too small. If you need a hand with anything ie spring or what ever just give me a shout....

the wheels and tyres do fit without a lift....just makes more room for them to move about....

I meant going to the shop /corwen but im always up for a jolly

the springs are sided ...the drivers side are meant to be a bit beafer/longer to compensate for the transmissions weight being slightly off centre

Yeah sure blame us we don't mind!!! :D Those 265/75/16 machos are going to be seriously chunky fella, you'll notice the difference offroad straight away! For a start you won't be clanking your diffs and tank all the time!!!
They will be fine on std springs too but like Gez says you won't have great articulation, thats where +2" springs and shocks come in! But be warned once you start down the suspension lift road it is hard to turn back and it can get quite expensive too!

As for which springs go where, the heavier ones are the back springs. You'll know which are heavier it is very noticable! The springs are NOT sided. Only scorpys are sided, bearmach and britpart are not! Don't really need to be neither!

My Iron Man springs are sided ,And the Originals are sided too, If you look at the factory manual they explain and have colour codes for which one is which. with your motor being quite new you should be able to still see the paint blobs on them...

Guy do you have the LR parts manual?????

Been out oiling everything that lloks like it might need to come off - noticed a yellow blob on the front nearside - don't know if it means anything?

With the truck lifted in each corner the back brake lines seem fine however the front look like they might be tight - uncompressed the 'new' springs are 80mm longer than the current at max dangle - admittedly the shocks might be hold a little bit of the spring in compression

Do wonder if springs alone will be much benifit wthout + 2 shocks and brake pipe extensions?

Going to weigh the springs see which is the heaviest :D

If you have the pennies fella then I can highly reccomend buying 2" shocks and brake lines too, will make your truck far more capable! If you'd had a 2" lift, shocks and brake cables when you did the pen steps you wouldn't have rolled! Think about that!!!

Just shelling out on new set of tyres and wheels and still waiting for the bill for my new fuel pump (slowest invoicing garage ever but I am not complaining) so finances aren't good at the moment :(

If I went to the trouble of trying your springs I'd be half way to fitting new shocks etc as well - might be worth leaving it until I have saved enough pennies for the lot, seem to be lots of deals on the whole package but what to go for? Difficult to know what's best

Keep them springs as long as you need to decide! no rush!

OK but let me know if you want them back - plenty of room in may double garage :D

You'll have to recommend some shocks then we might still be able to do a deal with the springs :)

Don't think a +2 lift would have helped on the steps, I blame drive error

Shocks = Pro Comp
Extended Break pipes = www.llama4x4.co.uk (http://www.llama4x4.co.uk)

If you put the longer springs on with the old shocks, the shocks will limit the travel.

Old Man Emu springs are handed as well. Taller ones on the drivers side and the longer of the pair on the back.

Lots of good advice...its great when everyones got a different opinion :D

Shocks limiting travel make sense so is there any advanatage fitting taller springs without taller shocks  Would it just kill the old shocks quickly?

But be warned once you start down the suspension lift road it is hard to turn back and it can get quite expensive too!

Looking that way  :D :D

As for which springs go where, the heavier ones are the back springs. You'll know which are heavier it is very noticable!

BA2107 springs are slightly lighter than the BA2103's but there is very little in it, only a couple of pounds

From the Bearmach spring guide PDF you posted recently the two types aren't shown as a typical combination. Can you remember which way around they were on Eva?

Paul Humphreys

With the longer springs you will get the life and more room for bigger tyres. But no more travel. You can add the longer shocks later after the break pipes. DO NOT fit longer shocks without doing the break pipes as you will pull the old ones off!! Another note, you might need spring relocaters, but if you put jubilee clips at the top it will stop the spring dislocating in the first place.

Paul

Well actually a lift would have helped alot because what you actually get is more droop, so your wheels stay in contact with the ground. If you'd had more droop (axle and heavy wheels closer to the ground) your centre of gravity would have been alot lower and you probably wouldn't have gone over!

Shocks - Procomps, love mine and they seem to be alot meatier than some of the other 2" shocks (monroes in particular).
Brake pipes - Richard @ mill services i'd say

Yes you'll have more room under the arches to fit bigger tyres, but your downwards articulation will be limited by the shock!

Whilst you have the standard shocks your brake lines will be fine, only if and when you change the shocks will you have to change the brake lines!

Heavy on the back light on the front. you should be able to tell which is heavier by just pickign up the boxes! The truth is that they both fit front and back and if you don't like them one way around then try them the other way!!

I can't remember which numbers were the rears and which were the fronts if you hadn't guessed! Soz!

Cheers Paul, good advice, Pro Comp ES9000 Shocks don't look too expensive from MM4x4. Providing I don't break anything else for the next few months I might be able to get some and take Guy's springs off his hands...

Don't think the diameter of the new 265/75 tyres is any greater than 7.50R16, just a little wider - you'll have to plan some routes for me that don't require turning corners :D

Get some modulars or 8 spokes and you won't have to worry about steering stops. Eva's are turned all the way in and there is still plenty of room between the tyre and chassis!

you and Dave are on about different places, the ones Dave is on about is where he put his 90 on its side.

As for the pda talking to MM, unless its usb 2, get a card reader to move the maps over. Or it takes for ever to get a map on the memory card.

:D Think its 78mph well it is for 200tdi

Funny, thought one passed me doing around 85 last week  must have been KPH :D

The 265/75 Machos are only rated at 80 MPH but as this is over the national speed limit I guess it doesn't matter regardless of a vehicles theorical top speed - looked everywhere for Land Rover speed figures, nothing offical which is off, best I could find was

TD5 110
0-62mph 15.1 sec
Max Speed 85 mph

TD5 90
0-60mph 15.4 sec
Max Speed 88 mph

Never know when you might need an 18lb sledge - good mechanics tool - don't tell Gut I might use it to test fit his springs - who needs spring compressors anyway  :D

NO, the tyres need to be higher than the makers MPH for the car or the insurance can null and voide if you have a bump!!

I am happy with 80, go over that an plod could do you for speeding and dangerous tyres but stick to 70 and I'll be fine on both counts :) Same with the insurance, crash doing over 80 and they would walk away from any claim. Lets face it Landys aren't built for speed so I am happy with the machos

Grizzlys I think are Q rated so 99mph, not that they would make it that high!! But mine started off as a TD so its a lower speed anyway.

As I understand it, legally the tyres are OK, insurance depends on who you are with. Clearly if something happens and you are exceeding the speed rating for your tyres they will walk away however I think if you are breaking any law (natonal speed limit) your insurance is also imediatly void...

Thats true, but what if you have a bump at 30 mph in a 30 zone and they decide you should have not been on the road as your tyres are not road legal on your car???

Will check with the insurance but tyres are legal up to 80 so a bump at 30 is within their operating limits... If you start looking at mud tyres with a 20% road 80% off road rating there's just as much chance they will try to agure you're at fault

I have, had to as its an auto:) and its had the tdi fitted. All mods are ok as long as I tell them. But when it gets bobtalies thats another story. As its chassis work. I told them its got a 2 inch lift now, saves telling them later:D .
