Would it be possible to creat an insurance page on the forum, whereby different companies are listed with a kind of positive and negative poll under each one, so that if you have had a good experince with one company you can add to their positive bar, a bad experience to their negative one. That way, the most common question across all forum i.e. what insurer? gets answered at a glance! Is this possible? Good idea bad idea?

It would be good to learn about good or bad experiences of insurance, though even this can be tricky. If you have a good insurance company, you may never have any dealings with them, so will have nothing to write about. If they make a mistake, then that's a bad experience that we will hear about. So all we will hear is the bad experiences. I had also thought about compairing quotes, but there are too many variables to take into account, i.e. where you live, how long you've been driving, how many years no-claim, etc.
But it might be good. :D

I guess so, but I would rate my insurers as good based on quote and service even though I have never had to make a claim. I would also have voted a negative quote for another insurance company because they had crap customer service and put my premium up on renewal (they said it was coz of Sep.11th! Must have been a 90 that hit the towers then...), so that would work. But I guess it is only ever based on opinion but that is what posters ask for....

I did this some time ago - makes interesting reading but I think it was a little too contraversial to get into the Landy press. It's posted on Motorheads forum under Forum FAQs at the top of the page. There is a lot of very useful other stuff there too.
A bit too long to post on here unfortunately.

Thanks for the link, might come in useful!
What if 1,000 Defender owners got together to present an insurance company with a deal - the cheapest insurance for 1,000-vehicle business? My 90 is much modified and I could ONLY get Adrian Flux to be interested.
Sorry about the above image - my niece did that!

I'm a bit concerned about insurance costs - I have no real frame of reference at all.
Any ideas (really roughly) of how much it would be for a 28 year old woman who's been driving for 11 years with a clean driving license and full no claims history to drive a 110 200 tdi (L or P plate ish) - with cover for green lane driving and maybe some minor off-road stuff..... ooh and for her (slightly younger) (and with slightly less no claims) boyfriend to be a named driver!?!
If this is a stupid question, feel free to ignore me ;-)

I'm 25 with 2 years no-claims, been driving for 7 years and it's cost me £460 this year, fully comp on a V8 110 CSW.

Have a look at the above reference. My V8 lightweight coiler is very modified and the NFU have been great.
Hi Smileygirl, my insurance this year for a p reg 300tdi 110 van was £296 fully comp with claim protection. I'm 43 with full no claims discount. Thats with directline. i really shopped around and found it really difficult to get cover for a 3 door van, csw's no problem. Vans seem to baffle them, couldn't find them on their screens. As for off road cover, forget it. Knowing your not covered will make you think twice before tackling something too extreme. Good luck.

we only just found out that normal insurance will cover you for green laning - on the basis that rights of way are counted as public roads. Yay!
si_guru
29th Apr 2003, 11:16
Smileygirl,
Green lanes are public roads! So naturally they are covered by insurance, however be sure you obey all the usual laws when on a green lane, i.e. lights, seat belts, etc. (even if those happy rambling types never have their mungrels on leads)
I'm not sure how you would fair with the insurance company though if you, say, rolled over on a 'tricky' green lane. I think somewhere in my insurance schedule there's a clause like "..policy holder must take all reasonable precautions to aviod unneccesary damage to insured vehicle..".
btw: At the moment I use Flux for my Landie cover, however next time I'll get it insured with Direct Line. They quoted me £180 fully comp for my SIII (Viva la SLO) with no mileage limit. Seeing as I get about 15mpg, the mileage limits itself thru' my wallet!

Hi Smileygirl
I have just moved from direct line to Diamond. I am 38 and lost my no claims bonus after an accident. I am now paying £560 per year as appossed to £900.00 with direct line.
They are great for female drivers and will allow you one male driver as a named driver.
Give them a go and hopefully you can get a good deal:yay:

I'll second that with Diamond, I just helped my Mum renew her policy last night, Diamond were about £100 less than anyone else.
As for my Land Rover, I am 25, sandbag 24, 200Tdi 90 CSW, 12k miles per year, kept on a driveway.
A shade over the £300 mark (cant remember exact amount), the did quote me as only driver at about £230ish.
Sounds like sexual discrimination against us menfolks.

I'm in the middle of a ruck with Insure your motor .com. The robbin *******s are trying to stitch me up with a cancellation charge on a policy that hadn't even started! And its their flaming fault i've had to cancel it in the first place.
They offered me TPF&T on my Cavvie SRi at 250 quid. Smashing, i thought!
I gave them my credit card number over the phone, and sat back to wait for the paperwork to come. That's sorted, i thought!
When the proposal came thru, it was a policy for married couples only. Silly sods, i thought! (we're not married yet)
I phoned them to let them know they had made a mistake on the proposal form. Nice of me, i thought!
Thank you for letting us know, they said. That'll be another 140 quid they said! I won't tell you what i said!
I'll have to cancel it then, i said.
Fine, they said. That'll be 75 quid cancellation charge they said.
I won't tell you what i said to that either!
Why? said i.
Administration, brokers fees and legal cover all non-refundable. they said. ********! i said.
The policy hasn't even started yet, i said.
Oh well, in that case, they said, we'll halve the administration fee, they said! Thats a start, i thought!
That'll be £56.50 they said! ******** to this i thought!
And at this point i went off on a rant i won't bore you with, and ended up hanging up the phone.
I've written to the general manager of IYM.com stating my displeasure at the service i received and we shall see what occurs next.

just had insurance quote for 110 300 tdi defender, Mreg.
I am male, 33, full NCD (no claims dis).
Fully comp,
Churchill £699.
AXA £560
EGG £414
TESCO (get this) £288
A huge diff dont ya all think?
pete..
I think Steve H's post should keep all of us away from InsureYourMotor.com! Posts like this are really important. If we all stick together and not give companies like this any custom then they'll have to change unfriendly policies out go out of business. Apart from my Landie I have a Honda too - which is just coming to the end of the lease term. Honda are charging me £41.00 to sort out my cherished plate - they never mentioned the charge when I started the agreement and they had to admit that it's not in their small print. But apparently (I've checked with Trading Standards) they can still do it - and I am not allowed to sort out the number myself according to DVLA rules!!! Rum, eh?
I had to go through AON
and the 101 is now insured as a historic comercial vehicle everywhere else was either well over a grand or not interested cause i am under 25.
The are cheap though and when my friend claimed last year they paid up in full almost straight away

Steve H, If you contact your credit card company and apply for "dispute" they will sort it out.
Rating won't win any friends and remember that most of the calls are recorded, so any promises and statements made by either party can be checked and verified. If they didn't tell you that it was a married persons' policy then they were at fault and will have to back off and give a full refund. First of all though, write down all that you can remember of the original call, then contact your card company.
I aways ask for a copy of the terms and conditions before I buy insurance, and any company that refuses to provide these doesn't get the business. Some companies say that they only supply those documents after the policy is started. Well, they don't want my cash then.
Hi ya can't belive what aon told ya.
I am 21 have two accidents and three points and live in tilbury.(anyone that knows the area will agrre it is a dump)
yet i still only pay £130 a year fully comp and the gun is also covered on that as well.

Having spent hours getting quotes, I reckon it's really boring!
This is for my 'new' CSW 300 TDi, 1997 value 8500. I'm 41, wife 43, 5yrs NCB, most of the quotes are 150 or 250 XS
Footman James £309 (includes breakdown, relay and legal - my current insurer)
All the rest don't include breakdown:
TEsco 271
Fortis 276
Allianz Cornhill 304
Churchill 306
Chaucer 328
Diamond 270
Its4me 303
Still waiting for Adrian Flux and a couple of others I've forgotten.
Reckon I might stick with FJ! Anyone else I should try?
I haven't tried NFU as I'd have to speak to someone (God forbid) and I remember they quoted really high for the s3 a while back.

AON?
Throughout this thread especially 'owen' I have seen some excellent quotes from companies and mention of a company called AON.
I found their corporate site but how do I get a quote from them? Are they still prehistoric and I have to use that thing setting next to computer with Nokia on!!??
I got quoted from tesco £1047 for 3rd Party for a Disco '95 TDI-300. I know I am 22, but that takes the piXX.

In all their bumph they reckon to acknowledge any written complaint within 5 working days! we've had a bank holiday, so i'll maybe give them another days grace, but then it's time to re-send the letter, with a note saying "As you have not responded to my original complaint, i thought i would send you another copy"

Well, i've had a letter from the robbing *******s, and they say they are not prepared to offer me any more money back. So i guess its small claims procedure time! I know it seems a bit drastic for 57 quid but its the principle of it. If it was a tenner i'd probably let it go, but 57 quid is a lot of money to shell out for the priviledge of not signing a bit of paper!
I have found out thru the various phone calls i've made to different authorities that IYM.com are not registered with the General insurance standards council (G.I.S.C) and are therefore not governed by thier guidelines. This means they can do pretty much what they want and theres fork all (kids watching me type) you can do about it through the regulatory bodies.
My advice...... steer well clear of the following:
INSURE YOUR MOTOR.COM
GIRLMOTOR.COM
4YOUNGDRIVERS.COM
HYPERFORMANCE
or anything to do with the ALLEN AND ALLEN GROUP.
(Chris, is it ok to do this here? if not then v.sorry)
Cheers
Steve H
P.S. I'll let you know how they react to the small claims letter - it should be interesting!!!
I thought it was time to notify Direct Line about the changes I've made to the 110. Removed bullbar, added 2 rear seats and side windows. The gentleman says "hold the line" cue duff music, comes back"how many does it seat now and how many did it seat before?" Cue more music and I'm thinking how much more is this going to cost. Gent comes back,"thats fine sir, we'll credit you £39. I didn't ask why.:yay:

Yes, weird it's impossible to work out what they do/don't take into account.
Maybe they also think it's all newer therefore safer (brakes etc) and maybe even they think parts are easier to get hold of.
As Owen says they're keen on alarms etc - I always love it when they ask about S1's 'any security devices fitted?' - er, a door handle?:p

Its personal Bernie, its in my name as the policy holder and only the missus as a named driver. We have two certificates one for the Landy with me as policy holder and named driver, and another certificate for her car with me as policy holder and her as named driver.
In addition to that I have NCD Protection and if the missus has a bump it doesnt effect my NCD entitlement and if i have a bump it doesnt effect hers. We're each allowed two claims within a 5 year period without it affecting NCD.
Plus we're covered for off road accidental damage.....BUT not damage to a third party.
Phoned Frizzels on Tuesday with change of address details and new certificates arrived yesterday.........not bad eh :)

taking the rotor arm off on the 101 is a pain in the a$%^
so i don't bother,
the battery kill switch is hidden and the steering lock is a good one.

appaerntly in germany they used to double head 101's with a 105mm light gun on the back to deal with the long drags on the autobahns,
no wonder my gearbox was so wrecked when it was rebuilt.
as to insurance i was never even asked about security measures, they only wanted to know if it was left outside or parked in a garage

Have many people had trouble finding an insurance company who will honour their existing no claims bonus on a second car? A mate and I bought a kit car between us and some companies would not give any no claims as both of us have other cars - we did find one that would in the end.
I now want to get a disco or defender to tow it and definitely don't want to be paying big money for a vehicle I only do limited miles in. I notice that my existing insurer (Tesco) claim that NCD only counts on one vehicle at a time - b0ll0ck$ I say! Have an accident and when you come to renew next time they'll sting you on both policies. Arggh con merchants!
Can anyone recommend any companies on this basis or give me any I should avoid?
