Yesterday I was at a new site in Angelsey, which consists of forested, open, and rock areas. The medium and novice areas are still un-tracked, but that will change when driving starts. However, the area set aside for lunatic behaviour needs a bit of attention before people are let loose on it!
Basically, there are a few tracks that are overgrown with brush and overhanging branches, which need to be sorted. I have told the owners that I would try to get the occupants of about five vehicles on site next Sunday, the 19th. Essentially, whilst getting stuck and having a boggy time, they would clear back the tracks and, hopefully, create a few more. And it's FREE!
This will be an excellent site for all abilities once fully up and running, and this is a great chance to get in the owner's good books!
If anyone's interested, please let me know ASAP, so that I can provide directions and contact details. I will be there in the afternoon, so may be able to provide limited assistance!!!!
It would be useful if the vehicles involved are winch and mud tyre equipped. I think they will be needed! Things like saws etc would be handy too.
Regards,

Out of interest - is this in preperation for the site becoming a big comercial thing - or is it going to be a hush hush, invitation only type of place?

Secondly, would they consider letting motorbikes on the site?

Would imagine the planning, H&S, insurance issues with a commercial set up would be a nighmare

It is going to be commercially run, but it will be open to us on a regular basis. As to motor bikes, I'm sorry, I don't know the answer to that.
Anyone going to go??

The Lada has got to be a link to John Hoodoo :D

the pic on the website was taken on the day john came to visit.

Subject to no one else being on site for any other activities, in the picture, what you see is where you can play, excluding the fields in the distance.

the vehicles in the pic are parked looking all heroic in the rocky playground. Hoodoo led me there, i would have given up 250 meters earlier.

Mat,
Good photo! Thanks for the link.
Right, folks. You've seen the photo and the site (one photo worth more etc. etc.) so contact Mat on the numbers listed and wander up on Sunday. They're there all day, so turn up as early as you like.
As Dave says, it would be good to have somewhere fairly local to go!

Regards,

Site looks like it could be great, I am happy to spend a day there Sunday doing a little "gardening" and having fun :D

Is there a reason why the location and approx meet time can't be posted - if its going to be commercially run then the sooner it's on the map the better and it would be good to know who else is going.

Sounds like some recovery assistance will be needed

Oh go on then.

follow the A55 over the Britania bridge.

Take the second left off the bridge, do NOT continue along the A55

Turn right heading for Benllech and Amlwch.

Continue through Benllech. (Caution, Benllech is a camera van favourite, drive with care)

Approx 3 to 4 miles out of Benllech you will come to Brynrefail, it is a fairly small sign so keep those eyes peeled.

Turn left after the sign and BEFORE the white gift shop on your left (also known as the old post office)

follow this road for a mile or so and you will come to an even smaller sign on your left saying 'Pen Parc' take this left turn.

Follow this track and when you see the T34 (big Russian tank), you've arrived

Average journey time from Colwyn Bay is around 45 mins

You can turn up at any time as there will be a few of us staying there overnight from the Saturday.

Knowing your other hobby you and your mates could be in camo gear waiting in an airsoft ambush :D

Is the tank a runner  If it is it could do the track clearance for you :D

Could you post map refs or multimap link as well, I don't get to the island that often and usually end up lost

Little track clearing this afternoon at Rayvon's forest site :)

Whilst Rayvon filmed the workers consisted of me, Geo, GezC, Pete (non forum pal of Chez in a disco) and Dafydd (a non forum pal of mine who came in his Freelander as his 90 wasn't starting)...

With the help of a chainsaw, axes, bow saws and a winch Gez managed to get his 90 around a circuit of forest tracks which hadn't been used in many, many years, the final leg throught "light" bushes was a site to be seen  :D

Once Chez had "established" a route all four vehicles went for a Sunday afternoon drive :)

Hours later and after much winching we all made it back, a fine day out and a fine site :D

I noticed this morning that my neighbours Rangie was still in his drive, he obviously didnt make it then. Nice to sea Geo made it, didnt you just know he couldnt resist. Wish I could have been there but...

I done a few jobs i needed to get done on my Disco today. First I used some silicon and duck tape to seal up the rear shower roof, then changed a UJ in the front prop (should see the state of the one I took off) and finally put one of my diff gaurds on (and off again for some remodeling with a angle grinder and on again)

Firstly had some fun looking at the T34 tank (gorgeous example too) and eventually getting a Yugoslav armoured riot vehicle started up! All very manly and exciting I can tell yer! ;)

Then we used Gez's 90 as the trail blazer and beat our way though the undergrowth vreating a very demanding circular route through the trees and fire breaks, winch essential!!! :D

Then we all went for a trip to establish the tracks and have a wee play in the mud! Gez and Pete in tandum using Gez's winch to drag his 90 and the disco through the mud and then Me and DaveD doing the same thing! Plenty of hi-lift, waffle and winching action - GREAT FUN!! :D

I cant remember off hand what mine Is rated at. its either 9 or 9.5 .
I can remember thinking OOOO is that gunna be enough. But as far as I can see for a bit of recovery here and there its more than ample. In Fact both our winches seemed to take dragging two motors through the mud (which must be pushing 4 ton) in their stride. very impressive .

Id love a pair of optimas but its a constant toss up on what to spend the money I havnt got on :) If that makes sence.. I asked Mr bowyer about batteries and he said to use the standard battery. think its type 640 or somthing like that.which suprised me.but if its good enough for him.I can go for a set of muds before the batts.

To be honest my battery has been on it since I bought it. I think its a crappy halfords special and the wrong type.but its never missed a beat starts on the button every time

If its running the alternator`s doing the work anyway..

Its Great to finally find someone else with a 200 tdi to compare notes with.
sometimes it so much easier just to look at another vehical.

well then, i really had my eyes opened that day, i honestly never knew a) how much was involved in getting out of sticky situations and b) how much a land rover can do. to see Gez scuttling off through that uncleared track is a site that will live with me forever, FANTASTIC.

as for the video, well funny you like it, the reason i hadn't posted it's existence is because there is a problem with that copy, it's far too jerky, i haven't included any time lapse effects and it's kinda P**ing me off, video editing is my forte, posting videos on t'internet isn't.

i'm working on getting a better qaulity version up and running asap, also, the video is being streamed, something i wanted to avoid, i don't know how to make it download only.

oh the incompetence.

Anyhoo, had a belting day, next time i'll be more hands on and spend less time poncing around with a video camera, now, where's my trailer......

ps, considering i left the house at 8am on Saturday and didn't return til 8pm Sunday, the missus was in a remarkably good mood, i think the window cleaner may have been round.

Try posting it here http://www.megaupload.com/ .
You can post any file upto 250mb, they will then give you a link that you can post. People would have to download it to there own PC to play, but it means you can post a better quality video.

It's all much of a muchness relly, not much in the way of 'action' due to the length of time people spent getting unstuck, the video really is the pick of the crop.

If i can be bothered i might just transfer the whole tape to dvd and hand a few out to those who were there, bear in mind i'm a busy student, pot noodles don't make themselves y'know so it may not be straight away.

Now for other matters.

If anyone would like to come along this weekend it's going to have to be Saturday. After speaking with the boss, he only wants people onsite when we are on site and this week we will only be onsite on saturday due to this Sunday being mothers day, that really would cause some upset, playing out on mothers day.

I'm fairly sure we'll see the BOV move this weekend too.

Top right of the screen when you first go to the site will be a countdown timer, in seconds. When this is finished the counter will turn in to the download button. About 10secs before the end of the countdown a floating box will appear and cover the counter, cancel that away and then you should be able to see the download button.

I've been told that the bov actually moved today but only backwards and forwards, apparently they had to stop, something to do with a wet gearbox and the missing power steering pump. add to that no brakes and i think backwards and forwards will do for now.

Managed to get the fuel caps off this morning, a block of wood and a good whack solved that one, both tanks are almost full but the right tank is well corroded at the filler spout.

fingers crossed for this weekend, were hoping to give it a proper go.

No decisions on this weekend yet, ie Sat or Sun. we will be on at least one day.

I will get you eager beavers a decision as soon as possible.

What is the general preference? not just this weekend, but every weekend do you prefer

a)Saturdays

b)Sundays

c)Both

d)Alternate Saturday one week Sunday the next

So as not to spread ourselves too thin on the ground it's looking as though off road will be my sole responsibility, if this is the case you will have a dedicated contact. This all depends on how popular/succesful it is on site.

Gez and Geobloke, How did you find that top section, Good? Bad? Indifferent?

Gez and Geobloke, How did you find that top section, Good? Bad? Indifferent?

Matt the upper site is superb! Gez and I were saying to Tim that what the forest site doesn't have (rock climbing, ascents, decents and also non-damaging offroading too) the upper area does in abundance! In retrospect if you wanted a site open in a month that is where I would start. There is alot less work to be done up top and most of it is stuff a small group of 4x4s and a JCB could do in a couple of weekends! The forest site will take alot longer but heck will it be an ACE site when it is up and running!

Up top you could very easily sculpt a course that incorporates every driver (novice to expert) and their choice of vehicles, so even the school runners could get their tyres dirty and have a good time doing it. They would also have the choice to do some of the more technical routes too, rock crawling or actually being able to use their HDC for real!!!

I suggest you look at this site (http://www.langdalequest.co.uk/). These guys are in the same position as you lot and they have made it work really well! They have set out the site like an orienteering course, so if your paying for a particular thing (say 2 hour drive) you'd follow a certain coloured route, every direction indicator is numbered too so they know where to go and if they get stuck they can say "we're not far from blue 18". On that note what thee guys do also is to give out a CB radio for use on the course, or if you rent their vehicles they'd have them in already.

Something to think about anyway!

As for your previous question, for me either all both...

looks good to me ,there are two tracks at that end which need to be opened up, then we can start laying out routes....chainsaws will be needed to clear the wind fall and we will have to get the jcb down there to pop out the larger stumps.Simple:D .Can you arrange somthing with the old guy about getting his jcb down there. I can operate it if he cant make it.... also the exit from the first route could be cleared down to the bottom and tidied back up to the top...Ill only be able to make one day this weekend but it will be early:p ,get back to you when Ive had a word with the misus..

Have already had a look at the Langdale quest site, it looks like a good place but they appear to have damn site more space than we do, i think we're going to have to be quite inventive.

while you were up the top did you happen to see the drop into the tank arena? if so is it driveable? up or down? i'm no inclinologist (made up word alert) but i think it may be beyond 45º, what is the limit for a capable 4x4?

It doesn't feel that big when your there! Even if they are bigger IMO the way they have set up the course is excellent, sommat there for everyone. Having said that they don't do airsoft, paintball or survival stuff so your site will naturally be set out differently!

I don't know about that slope! I can rememebr thinking when standing on top and looking down that it would be possible and fun to try! Will have to take another look.

Gez what do you reckon?

There are plenty other steep hilly bits up top tho, coulda spent a good couple of hours driving round it!!

It would make for an excellent vid....seriously I think its fine ....Although Id prefer it to be dry the first time I try it.

As for which day I prefer sat because its good to have sunday free to relax before the weekly Grind. (feels like you have some weekend left) After all that sunday will be fine if thats when every one can make it.....

good day over at the site ,good to see the lads and meet up with the crag folk .... blxxdy Knaxxred now.. Would have liked to see part 2 driven but we were a bit busy over at part 1..( thought id have a quick spin round while we waited for the others.which turned into all day) aah well think we all enjoyed it...

Who`s up for a bit of pruning????? .
If we can clear some of the light stuff Peter said he`ll go down with his machine and pop the bad stumps up.. we can then repair the Worst ruts and make it more driveable.

You stayed quite late dave. Guy Igot lost looking for the splash ended up coming passed yours again.found it in the end.cool short cut..

Aye a superb day, such a pity Eva seems to have thrown a cv/or half shaft, price of offroading I guess!!! :(

Glad you found the ford in the end fella. was it running high? This is how it can be!! (http://www.landrovernet.com/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=11280&d=1098538145)

Yeah it was really nice of Pete to agree to pull them stumps out. Think the next time we are there we should try and start forging the perimeter route through! Suggest starting by walking it and hacking back trees and branches, then drive it!!

:D ha ha that is quite a lot of water!!

I reckon it was about 6 to 10 inches deep tonight.. Take it you didnt try crossing when you took the photo:rolleyes:

From what you say it sounds like the cv joint..(could be wrong)
Do you do your own repairs??

The plan for the track sounds good to me fella!! When do we start?

Are You coming Dave?? try out your new Axe..:D What Did your wife think of today?? ( RIP Daves planks youd need the mole they used to drill the channel tunnel to get them out :D arr well they went to a good cause)

I Thought the S111 was a cracking motor.looked good and It went really well..Sorry cant rememder the guys name, As for the classics ,Its always a Buzz to hear the old V8s on song:D

fairplay to floyd for getting stuck in... bet inside of the disco was wrecked:) ( floyd could you give me a shout about the patch we were talking about)

Cheers All for Another good day out :D :D

Yeah it was really nice of Pete to agree to pull them stumps out.

Is Pete planning to use the 360 by the entrance to pull out the stumps? Wonder what the 'new' track will be like afterwards? Certainly needs the stumps out and it would be a lot of work by hand :(

Good idea. Difficult sometimes to know what to cut back if you haven't got someone trying to drive the route at the same time. Seemed easier last time and today getting a 'volunter' (with a winch) to drive along whilst others clear as required. Keeps the pruning to a minimum...

Though the planks were left standing by a tree for me to pick up next time - don't say the SIII got stuck higher up - the 'poor man's waffles' certainly got plenty of use again today. Have to cut up some more for time time I am out playing. Sue enjoyed it, was good that Fi was there for her to talk to.

Think SIII was another Dave  3 of us out today :) Very nice truck, be great on a sunny day. Didn't look too high though, was he catching all the way around? Did warn you both the track was much worst than last time and suggested you walk it first, still more winch practice :D

RRC were great :D, they enjoy the track finding and lots of winching :D

Hehehe are yer wheels and tyres cleaner now then??? I usually drive through it several times at different speeds just to try and get as much of the chassis as wet as possible!!

I do do my own repairs, yes. although much help is going to be need with this one - Thread in the defender section.
