Yes its getting a lot worse. The problem is it will take a lot of work to get it right. It needs some work all the way up. But so do a lot of other places. We as volunteers can not fix them all. All I can do is ask the council if they can look into doing some work at he bottom bit.

The bottom bit is certainly the worst now, when we were last out the Frontera and me 90 nearly went over

Shame it was so late when we did it, I wonder how hard that rock is? Bit of light work with a pick one side with the excavated material used to build up the other side could work wonders without making it too tame... As the ground to the side of the rock seems to a slipping away some timber piles and rails will be required to retain?

Is the worst of the damage being caused by water errosion? Now seems to run all the way down the steps, anyone now the original route?

Like you say Paul its a big job :( Bet there is a fine line between getting the Council to repair or them deciding to TRO? Guess the cost of materials would restrict volunteer action?

He can't see the correct line to drive either! 'I'll just aim for the deepest steepest bit, is that ok everyone?' he he these are my pictures. That’s my mate Malcolm in the Surf. He actually lost control there. As you can see the wheels are full lock left. Well he slipped down the rocky section and the tyre bit and pulled the wheels over and put him in that position. We ended up having to pull him back and try a second attempt. Common problem there as I'm sure DaveJDavies will tell you:p

I have driven up it. It’s not too bad going up as long as you keep going. The rocks can be quite slipy when wet. I wouldn’t recommend going alone if you have never driven it. Guidance is needed. Also if you do drive up, the top of the track is deeply rutted so I would recommend good tyres too.

was quite scary parking up there, you have to climb that really steep bank so you're looking straight at the sky knowing theres a huge drop somewhere in front of you.

the bank is as high as the tyres (235/85) as well, which makes it difficult to get up. 2 waffle boards and a few people applying weight to the side were required

The problems with this lane were mentioned at Tuesday nights CRAG regional meeting.

I am sure Dave Rogers (CRAG chairman) said Wrexham Council were looking at doing some work in the near future including concrete to the big step and taking a pecker to the lump of rock lower down which is sending people over to the side and IMHO is now the biggest risk ...

The other thing that was discussed was just how popular this lane had become due to its challenging condition, especially when going up. The route is now perhaps more fit for an extreme site rather than a public highway...

You can try out the web site but to really find out what CRAG is you need to go on one of the days out or lane clearances. I did and was so impressed I joined up but it's not complusary :D

Attended my first regional meeting Tuesday, highly recommend CRAG to anyone interest in laning/off road issues

bobzilla7

CRAG is similar to GLASS, but a politcal offshoot. Differences of opinion maybe - I try not to get too involved these days.

I've always been of the opinion that we need one user group dedicated to support vehicular rights of way and that, in my opinion, is GLASS, even if CRAG has its heart in the right place.

In RoW matters we are the underdog and we need to unite which was why I pushed for GLASS (previously GLOW) so very hard in the first place as there was no equivalent apart from the TRF.

CRAG has the right ideas and so does GLASS, but really we need to be under one umbrella. Oh, I'm rambling, however if you drive vehicular RoW you should (MUST) be a member of a group that supports your pastime.

You must make your choice as to which group you wish to be a member of. I will always be of the opinion that there should only be one user group supporting vehicular rights of way due to the fact we are such a minority group.

If you love green laning then join GLASS. Or CRAG.
It's good to have a choice (sometimes).

DavejDavies
31st Mar 2006, 22:21
As bobzilla7 says, the main thing anyone off roading should do is join a club, whether its GLASS, CRAG, the local Land Rover Club or the TRF for bikers.

I am still new to all this and to anyone else planning on getting into green laning I would say find out who does what in your area, if you are lucky enough to have a choice try them all to see what's best for you then join up and have fun.

There's enough people trying to stop what we do, by joining any group and putting something back by the way of lane clearances etc we can go someway to offset the harm done by the reckless minority who tear up the countryside...
