View Full Version : Defeated by the Wayfarer

Tried the Wayfarer this morning going up from the Cynwyd fork. Even before we got there the road leading up was very, very slippy :( Lost momentum just before the top of the hill (still on the road) and started slipping backwards heading toward a post and wire fence which was all that was between us and a big drop into the field to the side
I was seriously thinking about jumping for it when I managed to steer the back-end into the bank bring me to a halt - relieved or what :D
Out with my builders shovell and with the help of some grit piled at the side of the road we were on our way again :)
Carried on to just past the fork from Llandrillo then tried climbing up to the summit but struggled to get up, stopping for the bl##dy gate lost all my momentum and as someone hard been through earlier there was lots of very polished, compacted snow - very, very slippy and no grip anywhere :(
Out with the shovell again got me through the gate but that was all I could manage, after lots of digging and around 6 attempts common sense finally got the better of me and I decided to turn around. This was a shame for the wife as she had decided to walk up almost to the summit and had to come all the way down again (not happy :( ) With her driving I easily managed to spin the back end around with a bit of pushing then we headed for home.
Have to ask Santa for snow chains next Christmas :)

Got to the top about 2pm, I got up the slope you mentioned but it took about an hour to get the lightweight up.
Also... Think these tracks were yours.

Yea, worst bits would have meltted by then :D :D Also I did a lot of digging  Nice having 2 vehicles, must stop getting into silly situations on my own
Seemed a lot easier last week even though the temperature was much lower and there was ice everywhere...

I was there between 12 and 1:30ish - meet a 90 and Disco going up as I was going, know a 90 and a Jimny made it up to the summit just before I got to the start of the last hill...
Was so bad I was thinking about making some DIY snow chains

Just read this post properly and noticed the time - must have just missed you. Yea some of those tracks will be mine :D Did you see a Disco with a 90 CSW?
Did you come up from Cynwyd or Llandrillo?
I can beleive it taking you an hour to get the lightweight up :( did you both carry on then to the end ? I was worried about getting stuck after the summit in one of the dips before Llanarmon DC

We came up along the forest track from Llandrillo, nearly turned back as we both skidded into a gully and had to dig ourselves out. Luckily it was the gully we went into rather than over the edge:o. It was only because we had to carry on up to turn around that kept us going. Didnt see anyone on the way up but by the time we got the lightweight up (problem was more to do with driver skills) there was about 8 cars waiting to go down and 2 waiting to come up. Carried on to the end, the other side wasnt too bad, a bit more slushy. Having said all that it all added to the adventure, best fun Ive had in years;).

Only one at the back is 'original' with 60k miles and still legal :D
The front 2 were new 6 months ago and the other rear the year before
It was really bad, as I said the week before got over no problem with lots of ice - its like the Eskimos will tell you, theres lots of different types of snow

If i had know there were so many people about I would have carried on - it was good fun but whilst not panicing you do wonder how sane you are at times

Well it wouldn't have made much difference fella if you'd had simex's on. When the ice gets that slick even snow chains struggle!

Yeh I recon if we hadn't got stuck on that first section then we would have met you and we could have all traveled together, pity. You done the right thing turning around, never know what trouble you could have gotten into.

Strange, I have better luck when I leave her at home ;)
Took me weeks to convince her it was safe to come out with me then another brush with death  :D
Be lucky if she trusts me to drive her to the end of the road :D

Yea, would have turned around after the first spot of trouble but as the road down into Cynwyd is so steep I convinced myself it was less trouble going over
Was fun but I am not used to all that digging now I've given up building :(

Others seem to have managed - must have taken advantage of all the digging I did
More compacted snow than ice although there was ice underneath.
Been thinking of all sorts of Scrap Heap type solutions for next winter - diy studded tyres etc, just a case of getting the right size wood screw  :D :D
Seen diy chains years ago, effective but don't get too close if they go wrong

Lol yeah I was thinking about studding my walking boots last week, was trecherous walking on the pavements. Ended up walking in the road and hopping on and off the pavement when a car came near!!

Sorry i dont own a landrover! I was out with my friend in my jimny and him in his TD5 90, we started out from llanarmon DC at 9am ish, went over the top and down the lower fork, we were the first up that day and it was hard making out whichh direction the track went in. We returned on the upper fork and struggled to get up to the summit from the fork - well, the 90 struggled! by the time we made it down to Llanarmon at 1.15pm a lot of the snow had melted, the lane out of the village to the start of the wayfarer had foot deep drifts at 9 am in the morning! DavejDavies saw my mate struggling in his TD5. Any Macho Tyre treads you may have seen were ours , we both had Machos fitted.

Nah, my 4x4 was 15 grand cheaper, doesnt break down, has ABS, electric windows, soft top, is faster, more economical, just have to import all the bits from Australia though!
If i had a Land Rover the wife would onlyhave it as a daily driver, the jimnys only the 'second car' something cheap i have to go to work in - well that was the idea when i bought it, spent rather too much to count now.:D

Might invest in a late disco 2 for the wife and maybe future caravan towing, but for greenlaning and tripping to work and back i cant fault the jimny even if it does look a little silly in standard form! Looks a bit more butch with the ARB winch bumper now though.

Disco sounds like a good idea :D
I have often been amazed just what a Jimny will do  No way you'd catch big fella like me driving one though :) Like the nice solid feel of the Defender :D
Defender toys are nice and cheap to - there is a limit as to how 'butch' a little truck can look, even with the accessories ;)

Hi Jimny.
The Jimny your driving is as you say much cheaper to run and has more frills than a Land Rover, but there is something about owning a landy.
Get the misses a Disco and you will soon both be converted to the dark side -of which there is no return.
Good luck

You folks mean the uncertainty of whether the Landy's actually going to start? Or the cost of repairs?;)

I know of quite a few lanes you cant get a land rover down.... Landys are good for towing though i spose.

Got some very tight lanes on your laneriders dot com site  - interesting spelling of Betws y Coed as well :D
Were the phoptos taken on the lane over to Dolwyddelan?
Top Marks on the site and thats a lovely suzuki you got there.
I See what youre saying about size, but I have yet to come across a legal lane to narrow to get my 90 down. however I do see a problem with cyclepaths . :D
Too big means theres always enough room for the chainsaw .. And
Good for towing too.:D ....
Fair play though jimmy looks like youve got it well kitted out the arb looks to be a tough bit of kit.what size tyres have you managed to get on it ?

Apologies for my welsh spelling guys! The tight lane is near Conway (ish) cant remember exactly but theres a few in Derbyshire that have 'land rover gates' on them too. there are some pics of the lane coming down to Dolwyddelan which is a real nice drive - but everything was frozen solid ! The Jimnys got 215/80/15's on, so about 29" tall - so still struggles on severe ruts on occasion, but the tyres are obviously much larger than standard and Ive had to re-gear with a new transfer box to cope. High range is now about 20% lower and low range about 90% lower so rock crawling is my game! can have it in first gear low box and get out and walk faster. The ARB bumper is amazing, heavy - meaning custom front springs, but definatly fit one to any other car i may have from now on.
