View Full Version : Anyone for the Wayfarer this Sunday?
DavejDavies
15th Feb 2006, 01:32
If anyone is interested I am thinking of doing the Wayfarer this Sunday (19th Feb). Also thinking of a few other lanes in the area including the phesant steps (rescue services on stand-by :D )
Think Geo and Eva are interested - makes a change from trying to get a tan at Red Wharf Bay ;)
Anyone else?

Yup think I would be up for that and I might have got Eva's new suspension installed by then too!
Where you planning fella?

Can go the same way we did last time (without turning over on the steps) then loop back to the Wayfarer?
Paul H has suggested a couple of routes - the v gully into Glyn Ceiriog from Ceiriog Forest (part 1) and a route which ends at the Mill at the start of the steps (part 2)?
Or start with the Wayfarer and see what we fancy next - it was a nice easy track and didn't take too long. Could try both arms rather than go over at Glyndyfrdwy? One out the other back - either arm takes you past the carwash before getting back on the A5...
Need to see who else is keen as righting a 90 with two people was hard work :D

I'll be floating around that area during the afternoon. If you need rescuing, give me a shout on the CB (Ch 19). Enjoy righting Landies!!

Hi,
You do need to get a CB asap as no mobiles work at the bottom of the steps!!!!
I have a 3 mobile and an Orange on PAYG just incase the CB givs up!!
The RRC is rubbish on the road, but great off of it. Its whats under the skin!! But it needs some welding this year!! I make them last about 2 years then change all the bits onto another one. The last one ended up on its side!

Hi,
The last one ended up on its side!
Paul
Know that feeling :D
Funny enough when I was last at the top of the steps I got a signal - phone call from a contractor working for me over the weekend whilst the office was shut - sorted out his question whilst safely parked then 2 minutes late was on my side
Have to do a search here for CBs - got a birthday coming up soon and need to start dropping hints :)

Hi Dave,
Do you have Memory map?
We are starting from Corwen about 9-30, Keath of Simply 4x4 starts from there at 9.45, so a chance to tell people how they can go laneing for FREE!!! Part of the plan!!!
We will be doing some of the same lanes as you but not at the same time.

LOL :D :D I like it...
That was the best bit of doing the Wayfarer myself - thinking I had saved £35 by not being stuck in a traffic jam behind a Pajero :)
Don't mind paying for a private site but there seems to be plenty of people happy to help out with green laning. Never been with Simply but I can see the appeal to a newbee. Having read the good examples on this site, GLASS code of conduct etc there is no way I would ever consider it now...
Do you have Memory map?
Got a trial version which I haven't really tried yet as I haven't got round to finding a gps receiver (another thing for the wish list) - if you have your route I'll have a go importing it

Sounds like its going to be busy, don't want to meet up with a big convoy in the wrong place :(
Don't know what time we will be starting out but 9:30 in Corwen might be a little early for Geo :) Would be good to see you converting the masses :D

If not I will have to try a few non-forum members
Every non-forum member I know is either between landies, broken down or busy :(
People pay £35 for trips like this just to be stuck beghind behind a Pajero

Well what a day! by eck! Phew! Have now met Paul, Dave, Fiona and John (Hoodoo) and can safely say they are class peeps, would go laning with them anyday!
I lost ount of the amount of lanes we did, it just seemed to go on forever and ever, a life time of laning fun! As well as the lanes we did with Paul, DaveD and I also did the other side of the Wayfarer and the carwash again, in the dark! Great fun! :D I could get used to night driving, is fun!
The other Dave (not DaveD) managed somehow to get stuck in a really small puddle, not sure how!! But he did! :D and then due to lack of difflock Paul winched himself up part of the V-gulley!
I am proud to anounce that DaveD did not repeat his incredible upside down feat on the Pen Steps this time, although there was one slightly hairy moment whilst going around the next boulder where a little Geo ballast was required!! ;)
I personally had a great time, there were the odd "oh crap breathe in" moments which required a little help and my bow saw! ;) That awning is coming off!
Pictures to come!

So many great lanes I didn't get a chance to take many photos, the few I did were of the back of Eva as Geo went on a one man lane clearance operation :D
Going up the v gully was something
The Steps have really been washed out since we were last there :( Time for repairs
The Wayfarer in the dark was interesting  - thanks for going out of you way to take me and Geo to Llanarmon DC.

Talking of land clearing, This sunday is NGLD. CRAG has plans for work on the V-gully and Foxes revenge (where we met the discos) plus one other that we did not do.
I will post more later, when I get time as I have just got in.

Hi all, :p wish I had seen the start of this thread, I went out laneing last weekend with Keith from Simply 4x4 but didn’t see you on the car park at the start, but I think we passed you on the top of one of the mountain tracks.
I’m running a 300TDI Discovery that I have had for about 2 years and I have never really been happy with the performance, I have had numerous mechanics look at it, fitted loads of new parts, had new timing belt fitted, and timing checked, cleaned out the fuel system from top to bottom including the water trap at the back fitted new fuel lift pump cleaned out the intercooler etc etc played with the settings on the diesel pump that much, I think it would be nigh on impossible to ever get it set up anywhere near what it should be set at, I have had that much black smoke coming out of the back chimney sweeps were beginning to follow me around giving me there business cards “ I jest, but believe me when I say black smoke it was Hemel Hempstead Fuel Depot Proportions ” any way, last week I fitted a snorkel and sump guard to my Disco and a chap from down the road from me stopped for a chat and to see what I was doing to my motor,” we are a friendly lot in Coseley” in the general conversation about disco’s I told him I liked the motor but have never really been impressed with the performance, and he goes on to question me about the performance issues, and out of thin air he says “sounds to me like your turbo waste gate is not working” and me I think yea okay mate nice talking to you but I have had expert mechanics look at this motor and they all tell me there’s now’t wrong with the motor, so he proceeds to feel about under and behind the turbo and then says “here’s your problem mate, the lever for the waste gate has come of the end of the rod?” a few grunt and groans try that mate he says, so I jump in the motor boot it up the road and before I even get out of first gear “the mans a genius – power I had never dreamt of “ “wow” I shot of and disappeared into the distance enjoying my new found power, two bloody years driving round with all my turbo power going strait to the exhaust I ask ya.
Sorry got carried away, the reason for this post, would like to tag along with you lads on some of your off road trips if you will have me.
 Keith

Hi,
I was in the white RangeRover handing out the flyers.
You can come laning with me anytime. I get out most week ends.
I was just about to make an offer on your Disco untill you said you had fixed it. I would also call all the mechanics thay worked on your disco and ask them what you paid them for.
Have a look at the NGLD thread, if the clearing is done quick we will do some laneing after wards.
When I am laneing, its the only time I am not working. Also have a look at www.crag-uk.org (http://www.crag-uk.org)

Hello Paul,
thanks for the quick reply, and the offer to tag along is much appreciated, thinking of lifting my disco 2 inches Sat if weather permits, wouldn’t mind coming Sunday and giving a hand lane clearing – gives me a chance to meet some of you and find out more about CRAG, I will bring some dusters and polish – anything else? Only joking. :D
Let me know were to meet, but will need a little more than numbers? Not into map reading.
Seeya Keith. ;)

Hi Geobloke.
Yes remember the Red 90 and the White Range Rover,;) the river yes I remem erm erm? It’s in Wales! :( Maybe it will come to me one day when we are in the area, I have a Navman Pin 570 with GPS and have been thinking about putting Memory Map on it, I know you can download maps with waypoints on it for offroading, and that you can plot your own course – or record the route you have travelled ( I read it on the net) I downloaded a trial version but like the Landranger Maps its all double dutch to me – just a little something else you lads can teach me.
 Keith.

Memory map is good, but costs a lot if you buy it.
The river I have driven a few times, just a shame they have closed the one the opposite the start, it gos thro a SSSI, the first part is un driveable as well.
There are quite a lot of river crossing if you look for them, theres one just below Lake Vyrnwy. But it can not be drive all the way right now as the gate on the other side is too narrow. We (CRAG) are working on Powys CC to get it changed.

As I missed most of the snow down here on the coast over the last few days I am planning to do the Wayfarer tomorrow morning :)
Did it last Sunday, plenty of snow and ice but no problems.
Convienced the wife to come with me as it's a 'gentle' route :) She has been a little reluctant since we rolled over  on the steps
As I know every gate up there by now it will be good to have an assistant :D
