Good write up of the Strata Florida in this months (Feb 2006) Land Rover Owners mag, I beleive a lot of the guys down south rate it :D :D

New here myself and haven't seen a lot of posts from South Wales, I know a few seem to hang out on greenlanes section on http://www.difflock.com/ - not sure if I am allowed to post a link to another LR forum so don't tell Geo ;)

Cheers Dave

You can join GLASS and then get details of various lanes off the Wayfinder site.

Caldicot in South Wales is my home town, but have yet to go laning in valley commando country.

I have seen a greenlaning DVD which was shot around Tntern lanes in the Wye valley (which is close to my home town). Have always wondered where they drove as no byways are obvious marked on the OS map for that area. But my recent GLASS membership and access to the www.way-finder.co.uk site have now helped me map the area ready for when I decide to explore.

tis a tad tricksy but worth it for places like that. I just put in a 10 km radius limit for the area I wanted to check out. I also downloaded all lanes they have in the database for OS areas ST - SU - SP etc, thousands of lanes all imported into memory map - ready to dump onto PDA.
But with Wiltshire... you just open an OS map and its BOATS galore staring you in face so wayfinder has less benefit.

hmm not sure...

mine is MemoryMap OS Edition 2004 V.4.2.2

It's licensed under "YOU-THEIFING-SOFTWARE-PIRATE" :D

pro features are not enabled, but it says on the HELP>ABOUT menu:

MAP IMPORT : YES
PRINTING: YES
GPS PROGRAMMING: YES
REAL-TIME PLOTTING: YES
PRO FEATURES: DISABLED
License Valid.

I just imported the *.rxf files which that wayfinder program spits out.

The coordinates given for the Sarne Helen above
"SN 855074 Sarn Helen - appears to come out at Aberdulais SN784000"
refer to a byway that has a permanent TRO and is only open in June, July & August

Cheers - shame Land Rover Owners mag didn't flag this up - suppose they will agrue that they did say to check with RoW officers at the local councils first..:(

Suppose the only way to be up to date is to find £30 and join GLASS

Could do but only if No. 4 is at the south end of the street otherwise you need to look for North or Mid Wales posts :D :D

Now I'm confused.....

Wales Street runs from West to East, from No. 2 to No. 8. This means that No. 4 is on the Northern side, but bang in the centre of the road...

I think I'll move around the corner into Henry Street or Victoria Avenue :D

Actually, my whole suburb is a tad Anglophile. The suburb is called Sandringham and streets have names like Henry, Victroria, Elizabeth, Wales, Wellington, Conaught, Anne etc.

OK, enough thread hijacking... :D

Please note Dave the Claerwen dam byway ends at a bridge on the border shown at:
http://www.streetmap.co.uk/newmap.srf?x=281980&y=267205&z=3&sv=281500,267500&st=4&ar=Y&mapp=newmap.srf&searchp=newsearch.srf&dn=891 You used to be able to drive thru the ford alongside the bridge but this is now no no. It makes a long scenic reservoir side drive, but you could do it in your Grans fiesta!

The byway at the bottom of the dam is much more like it, but please be respectful in the farmyard at the southern end: http://www.streetmap.co.uk/newmap.srf?x=289425&y=261645&z=3&sv=289500,261500&st=4&ar=Y&mapp=newmap.srf&searchp=newsearch.srf&dn=891
ending at the occasionally deep ford at http://www.streetmap.co.uk/newmap.srf?x=286980&y=263300&z=3&sv=286500,263500&st=4&ar=Y&mapp=newmap.srf&searchp=newsearch.srf&dn=891

In addition in the Landy mag feature they mention the Monks Trod and show the start, which is misleading. This has been TRO to 4x4s for donkeys years and to bikes for the last 2 years. Its very deceptively boggy and I once buryied the dirtbike up to the seat, it took an hour to pull it out and an hour to drain and restart it!

Not sure it was such a good article and with hindsight I regret posting - seems to be a number of errors :(

The section covering here (up North) seemed to include a few odd lanes and given the problems with the routes down South I do wonder about their status

Almost be tempted to write in to LRO and complain...

Just shows the need to join GLASS and access the Wayfinder site - one of my New Years resolutions :)

That would make you an honorary North Walian :D

I think you have to read the articles in LRO with a little caution. They did one in the November edition; Wales North to South. If you plot the grid refs given, some come out in the Irish Sea.

Yeah there were a few typos

Even the ones they got right the info wasn't 100% :(

Perhaps thats why some of the other comics don't publish route grid refs?
