Well what a day, superb weather! Gorgeous is such an understatement!

I got to meet up with Dave (DaveJDavies) and wife Sue! Greet to meet you two and thanks for a fantastic day out and coming with me! :D

Right the day started superbly with some extremely interesting weather phenomenon and the low sun levels really made the geology stand out along Nant Ffrancon and Ogwen valleys!

I met up with Dave and Sue in Betws-y-coed and we made our way to Glyndyfrdwy where we drove up the valley and through Ceiriog Forest, Lovely easy road with stunning views!

Then we headed over Bryn Du (where we had lunch) which is a lovely track and down in to Llanarmon Dyffryn Ceiriog and on to Tregeiriog an the start of the track that leads to the phesant steps. Both lanes are great and interesting but vehicles with low ground clearance will ground out!

everything was going swimmingly and we had no problems at all! Smiles all around! Then on the last section of the Phesant Steps DISASTER STRIKES!

Dave's front tyress unfortunately bit and snapped to the left causing the TD5 90 pickup to slide on to the drivers wheel and "trip" up on it, where it rolled over on to the drivers side! Ouch! For a horrid horrid moment I thought Dave was going to get his arm trapped between the cab and rocks it was falling on to! Heart in mouth moment! Thankfully not! and both Dave and Sue were fine, a little shocked but fine!

Exiting the vehicle was interesting! Ay-up the doors in the ceiling!

Now we set about devising a way of getting the 90 back on to its wheels, not easy since it was craddled and leaning the wrong way!

At this point a troop of 20 ramblers walked by just above us, the last couple stopped to point and stare and laugh (no comment!:Cross: ) I asked them if they would mind helping us to right the 90 to which they all just walked off! Not even a "OMG is everyone alright", nowt! was so supprised that they didn't give a damn!:( If we saw one of them with a sprained ankle you can be sure we'd offer them a lift down the hill! Ggrrrrrr! :(

Anyway with careful application of hi-lifts and brute force the 90 got back up on to its feet and apart from sme slight body damage was fine!

HAve to say that although it is a terrible thing to happen both Dave and Sue just kept on smiling! :p

By the time we got to the ar park just below the steps it was just starting to go dark so we made the decision not to do the wayfarer today and made our way back to the A5. Basically neither of us had done the lane and after what we had just been through doing a new lane in the dark might not have been very wise!

Before we parted company we did however take our vehicles through the Corwen Carwash, well it was on our way!! ;) :D Is actually supprising how low the water level is, only sill level on a standard defender!

Although it took a rolled vehicle I ahve learned that if problems of the big variety do crop up offroad they can be handled easily if you put your mind to it! Also picking your route over obstacles is so so so important!

So an eventful day! now enjoy the pics!

Cheers Dave and Sue, would go laning with you two any day!

Thanks for the great photos Geo - and the great day out, I can't wait to try it again!

Couple of things I have learnt: -

1. Concentrate on what I am doing - I was too concerned about damaging my diffs and wasn't paying enough attention to the steering!

2. Never leave home without a Hi-Lift - I would still be there otherwise!

Thanks again Geo for helping put Frolic back with four wheels on the ground instead of waving two in the air. Still can't believe people can ignore such a scene without asking if everyone was OK.
No doubt David is impressing all at work with your pics (or confirming he's totally nuts).
Hope to see you again soon. :D

That is exactly the same line Dave took and because his **** isn't as big he rolled over! Note the direction of his front tyres! the vehicel is essentially tripping over itself!

The only way to do that step safely in a standard vehicle is to from the top go far to the right and turn down hill keeping the vehicle inline with the obstacle! Esspecially if on standard suspension or top heavy like Eva!

Esspecially if on standard suspension or top heavy like Eva! it sounds like they did exactly the same. he was steering ahead at the start but with road tyres and wet rock he started to slip, then the tyre hit the rock and spun the wheels over to the left as you can see in the pic. luckily dads Range rover was behind so we got a rope on and pulled him back. I have driven this route a few times now and I always do it one vehicle at a time and I spot every one. JJsaul had a scary experience on there not so long back. we came across 3 other vehicles coming down as we drove up and James couldn’t reverse back down so he pulled up off the track... its a long way down if you roll off. lol

I am still amazed! just not human! even if you had a grudge against a group of people if one was in an accident you'd swallow your feelings, stop and help! I know I would of! Crettins! :(

Hi

Glad every one is alright, and it seems despite that little mishap I missed a good day.

The ramblers attitude makes me ashamed to be a walker. I'll think twice about helping them in future, the problem is like most decent people, I'd still help.

LandyV8
12th Dec 2005, 21:55
Cant believe those walkers. Post the link to the ramblers forum thread and ill take a look. if I’m ever out even when walking I would always lend a hand if someone is in need. Take yesterday for example when mark rolled his Disco. There were lots of people around who could have helped but i jumped right in to get them out the car, made sure every one was ok then worried about getting the car sorted.

Yep when we did it last time we did the same....made em walk up and stay uphill of the vehicles.

Yer my incident was err... interesting...

A couple of pics here....

To get onto that ridge was far trickier than it looks....compare the height of it with the height of my (235/85) tyres
And its a looooong way down if you overshoot going onto the verge.

And no the people coming down didnt give us right of way, they came barging down expecting us to move :(
Cheers again to Lewis and Neil for expert guidance that time ;)

Sunday certainly was the day for roll overs!

Once we got out OK we still had the real challenge of getting the truck back on its wheels. Plenty of head scratching as the first attempt got us nowhere and two men can't roll a truck cab in that position.

We needed more bodies so what a stroke of luck when the ramblers arrived! With the help of 2 or 3 we could have righted the truck in minutes....just a shame they rambled on by. Being miles from anywhere it felt like being stuck on a desert island and seeing a ship sail past...

Geo's tent was looking like it might be needed but with the hi-lift and adaptor in the front jacking point we managed to lift it high enough to roll over with a very big push.

I will certainly remember the right line to take next time and the photos went down well with the lads at work. Once they finished laughing I must have told my storey 30 times!

Might even change my avatar....

I helped to right a 90 up there about 6 months ago. Why is it it always seems to be 90s thet roll there?

We right 90 with the help of some TRF lads, as you say the walkers just walked past. But it was raining heavily at the time. I have been down there in a series 2a with no problems in the last 3 months. Its just the kine has to be right at the bottom. It akes it worse theres no trees to winch off of, can not use a ground anchor as the bank above the track is too soft.

Good man! Not sure why 90's roll on that stretch, sommat to do with short wheelbase and the wrong route.

So thats 2 counts of walkers walking past in their own little world! Hmmm! :(

Tell me about the lack of places to recover form on that track! ;)

Not having a go - but if you pick the right line you're OK in a 90. I've lead parties of 90, S3, S2a etc down there no probs. In some cases the 110's had a hard time of it.

Of course! Offroading is all about picking the right line and applying the necessary amount of pedal to get over or thro the obstacle!

Having been on my side on Sunday glad all is OK, and I just know that road well and would not want to go side ways on it like that, at least I got it wrong on level ground ( I know that sounds wrong)....

I had no idea that stretch was so hazadarous.... I just pootle down it, but then again I just scrape my sliders over it and let the rear protection take a knock....

I have done that route with my Nan in the back !!!! but it is getting more worn looking, might give it a rest for a while......

Truck flipped over so quick there was no time to worry - or use a toilet:)

Battle scars do look good but there is a dent to the edge of the bulkhead which is begining to rust! Might have to take the wing off over Christmas to treat it before I get a hole. Anyone got a link to wing removal thread?

The best bit about gaurds on the underside and sills is you are no longer worried about dinging anything, and hence you just worry about driving the best line.... most accidents seem to happen when people are trying not to damage something.
