Thanks hubber .....we all fly the flag high....St Andrews Cross

St Andrew was responsible for spreading the tenets of the Christian religion to Asia Minor...he was a fisherman in Galilee along with his brother Simon Peter ..(st peter)

He was put to death by the romans and crucified.....but did not want to be pinned to the cross ....as jesus was ....and was pinned on a diagonal shape of the cross..thus the Saint Andrews cross......some 6-700 years later some of his remains were brought to a pictish settlement on the east coast of Scotland ..........now St Andrews.........it was beleived that Scotland was close to the end of the known world.........then


My gripe......

why cant we in Scotland find and agree on the colour BLUE to to be used on the flag ......????

My kids love it as they always get two in-service days off followed by St Andrews Day off, so they have been getting plenty of sledging :D

My gripe ...

I asked my 7-year-old yesterday who St Andrew was and why they get a day off school and he didn't have a clue. Not even sure he knew it's St Andrews Day :(

They've done plenty on Halloween, and Diwali, and in fairness they make a thing of Burns Night ... don't get me wrong I think it's absolutely right they should be learning about different cultures and festivals etc, but why neglect the 'home' culture? :dunno:

I agree it's sad that our own kids don't learn our history, when I lived in the eastern block the St. Andrew's day ball was THE event of the year and most people at least knew who he was.
