I took Boogers into a specialists today to have the chassis checked out. Out came the big hammer and down came the rust! To my horror the hammer went through in several places that I had thought were sound areas...goes to show huh? Anyway, he says its worth saving and can be sorted.
Unfortuantly I have a weeping tank and weeping front brake pipes...so they also need sorting..and the front near side shock is not seated properly, so he recommended a whack with a big rubber hammer. That kind of engineering appeals to me :D
Anyway, latest pics if anyone is interested

Hi Backs4more,
Quite surprised that a 97 chassis would have any spots where a hammer would go through,**** poor materials to blame no doubt as my Stage 1 from 1984 only has one bit rusted through and thats an outrigger, rest is solid. My Disco(94) required a patch just in front of the rear crossmember but that too is pretty solid elsewhere. Hope it doesn't cost too much to get repaired
Cheers,
Iain

Hi Arrolman,
The 90 came from a shooting estate so has had a hard life. Spent most of the time upto its wheel arches in thick, acidic peat. Like bathing the thing in vineger for 8 years.
When I got it I removed huge amounts of peat from the tops of the chassis rails, lodged between the tank and chassis, up in the wings, front dumb irons, even the roof lining!!!! etc etc.
If you look at the sills in the pic, you will see there is no paint. Thats what the peat has done.
I did not pay too much for it so kind of budgeted for a new chassis in a year or too...and should still be in pocket...we shall see.
Thanks for the reply.
Good logic bugeting for the chassis, even if you did it now and paid top dollar to have it done you would have paid less for the old girl than most 97 tdi's on the market and its value would be well up on your costs. The weeping tank comes as standard, ours only weeps if over filled I think its the filler pipe but is definatly common.
I had a hilux pickup for work that had a similar life, it was a little sluggish for 6 months with being idled alot but change the oil with an engine flush every 3000 mile for the first 9000 and took it for a run (down to yorkshire and back) different engine after that. Looking forward to seeing it in the flesh (metal?) looks good on the photo's. What of Poppy is she jealous? Is her fate sealed:(

Huey,
Poppy is becomming a bit of a dilema. The 90 is eating all the money just now, but Poppy is so original that i really want to restore her to her former glory. Not having a garage is proving to be a pain in the neck as if I strip anything, I normally have to get it back together before dark.
I want to remove the air-con and emissions sensors and get her back to a bog standard V8, make sure she is sound, then LPG it. For a family vehicle for camping and winter use she is great...but just now she is being wasted sitting outside.
I may have the chance of swapping her for a 1993 Rangie...which is tempting as its a 3.9 with LPG already fitted. It would be more sensible to have that i think, but not as enjoyable to own/drive. Also think it could prove costly to keep on the road from what i ahve heard.
Anyway, the saga continues,,,suggestions on a post card to....

Hi all.
might be a worth while idea to have a look at chassis where the mid cross member sits usually get corosion there if its found else where. Best thing to do is remove the cross member .
Rod.
:D :D Backs4more, I'd stick with Poppy you know where you stand with her and she is with all due respect a cracker, she's got character in buckets. You could buy the rangey and land yourself with the same trouble also if you lpg that engine and if it needs a little attention to get it back purring then you know where your at. The reason for chassiing our 90 is for the combined money I'd spend from the sale of the 90 and the cost of the chassis would result in me buying the same problems,
All the knuckles both cv joints and the swivels have been done, the steering box track rods have been done battery replaced and her tdi200 engine is sweet (courtesy of twice yearly trip to inverness from beverley at 70mph) but has had head gasket done. The clutch cylinders have been replaced. This is over about 3 years, probably similar to most punters on here!!! There's probably more but hey you get the jist. Poppy rocks everyone has said nice landy that has met her, just put the project on the back burner for a while. Hope that helps couldn't fit it on a post card.
Anyone wondering head gasket went at 110 000 miles and has since then pulled the horses from Beverley to St. Cyrus Train weight of 4.5 tonnes
and bless and some relief didn't miss a beat and for that reason alone she has a place forever on the drive. (needs the violins to the last paragragh)
:fiddle::D :D
