Very relevant.
In wet areas, 'cat holing' is recommended, at least 200 ft from paths, water sources or campsites, but in dry areas bag and carry out is essential as it will never rot down (some of the wilderness areas in USA it is illegal to leave anything). A friend rafted through the Grand Canyon once, a party of 20 of them, took a week, and everything was carried with them for proper disposal!!

anyone who has encountered Lion dung would be less squeamish about the relatively less unpleasant variety of human/dog/cat extraction

They get around a bit don't they, those ramblers.
Dont think i've ever come across lion dung in all my years of trail use.

Do they cover it like cats do?

I went "rambling" in Peru with the wife, 3 Canadians on the treck with us. At one point we had 14 porters, four cooks and two guides. Three guys carried the sh*t bags which were plastic bags filled with saw dust after taking them out of the toilet tents each morning. Imagine tripping over with that lot on ya back!!

Most of the "tourist" treckers on the so called "Inca Trails" just had a crap wherever they could find some cover. The tourist trail to Machpechu is just a toilet 70 meters either side of the trail.

The official BMC (I think) line is to crap on the ground and smear it, the sun is supposed to degrade it an render it harmless. Paper is taken away. In reality, most of the popular climbing areas in Europe are toilets within 400 meters, every stone, bush and wall has a pile of crap and paper under it.

Personally when climbing, I walk or drive at least a mile or so away, dig a hole and bury it. Whilst in full motion, so to speak, in the middle of nowhere (in Spain), a goatherd walked over a rise and stood and watched me whilst his goats had a good old nosey too.
