May be going over in the Landy either end of this year or early next year for work, but i should be able to get a few days laning in or posibly fishing, would even be better to combine the two :D

So where is the best place to look for some reasonably non damaging tracks (I do have to be able to get home) that I, an enthueastic novice could tackle without a guide?

TIA.

where will work be taking you?

Forget it in the north of the country and to be honest you would not find much around the north anyway. The South is where it all happens. the people are a lot more relaxed about it and most will wave you by unless its walkers from the north!

Take a look here for some photos of last weekend me and a couple of friends out in the alps

If you want something a little more then its over the boarder to Italy or France. Switzerland is so small that you can drive from one corner to the other in a day. The place shown in the pictures on the link above is approx 1.45 hours away from Zurich in the north where I am.

Just be careful and make sure you have the right permision,... the swiss are very strict about their land (learned that the hard way in the 9 years I was living there):D

Your right Storm and that is the general rule in the North but the South they are much less strict or care less so long as your not doing any damage you will get waved passed.

Anycase it is easy to nip over the boarder into France or Italy.
