After a bit of pestering by my eldest, I decided to take her to Nortrak so she could see what the 110 could do in my not so capable hands. After doing lots of climbs, humps, decents and a few splashes, my curiosity got the better of me and i decided to try dropping into the unknown, namely a large puddle!

First three or four times was no trouble...the water splashed up over the bonnet, but the V8 just powered up the climb the other side and basically taunted me..."Is that all you can do?" it kept saying....so I kind of got a little carried away.

Well, I can confirm that V8's do not like water inside the engine compartment! Oooops. There we were, stuck in the middle of a stinking puddle upto the axles, rather embaressed.

Not to worry, Rod to the rescue...with a little help from another 90 (sorry, i always forget your name) I was soon pulled out and towed down to the carpark to dry off.

30 minutes with the bonnet up, she started again, much to my relief.

Anyway, thanks once more for a smashing day at Nortrak, thanks for getting me out of the ****e and thanks for the compliments on the V8. I am now online looking for a diesel 90, snorkel and extended axle breathers...I think i have been bitten by the mud bug!!!

so that horrible burning smell was a bit of a problem then!!

I have one of those rubber dizzy protectors on mine and it does seem to be quite useful at keeping water out of at least a couple of the necessary bits. Bit of a pain to fit but patience works wonders.

I have to admit to not putting it in very deep water since fitting but it has significantly reduced coughing in deep puddles in the rain. I can't remember where I got it from but its quite cheap and seems to be good- easy enough to find in one of the landy mags I am sure.

I have been in the mud puddle that caused your problems and not had any trouble at all with sucking water in - maybe a cheap improvement to its submarine capabilites.

I don't think the burning smell was associated with the engine dying in the water. I think I tracked that down to grass and crap caught between the exhaust and chassis. As soon as I started to climb in second gear, is started to heat up and burn!

It would appear that the coil is in a position whereby as soon as water comes through the grill, the viscous fan throws big dollops of mud and water on top of it, coating the connections. It looks like a Luminition kit has been fitted...badly, with a loose connection its all been placed low down and the wrong wat round so it collects all sorts of crap. There is a big flap of rubber ontop that seems to ean attempt at trying to stop this happening. Bloody Australian mechanics!!..LOL

Ah the lovely smell of mud on a hot exhaust. I know that one well.

On the Dakar due to the design of the engine bay, there is a large gap on the front between the top of the radiator and the bottom of the bonnet so the rain or any big splashes from the front come straight in and the first thing they hit is the distributor so the rubber glove thing is quite handy. When you get the kit there is a small rubber thing for the coil as well.

The other 90 was me. Just trying the anacondas out, can't wait for rain and the end of harvest. You'll think someone has emptied the stable if you get a diesel!! But the 90 is exellent fun.

Thank god he did not have any 90's in!!!

Am looking for rims now...I thought Landys were cheap....lol..I have the mud bug!....and 5 tokens for the jet wash..and its still muddy underneath!!

Well seeing as I was the chump who got stuck trying to get over a little pile of muck I can't really coment on offroading ability but will say my 90 smells like a duck pond at the moment..............great

It might sound like a tractor but the old oil burner has no hassle in H2O even stinky stuff. Great day out and the 110 looks great.

If you are thinking of selling might know a man intrested.

Hi all.

You are very welcome, glad I could help out. I find it amazing how quickly they can die, give them half an hour to dry out and they go with one turn of the key.
I had great time to covered the 90 roof to wheels in mud, still need to clean it though. Hope you find a 90, there was one in local paper last week with 2.8td conversion fitted, not in paper this week so think it must be sold was a good price to.

Anyway hope to see you all again soon.

Rod.

Sell Poppy the 110..NEVER!..lol. Only had her since June and have plans for her....one of which was to never abuse her offroad...well thats fallen through already!!

Still looking in the papers for a 90, or maybe an 88 or lightweight. I might even go for a Suzuki SJ...pretty impressed by what I saw them doing.

I do love the sound of the V8, but I think a deisel is the way to go if I want to get wet, and I like the look of Rods 90 with the external roll cage etc..very mean! Just have to find the money as I have too many hobbies! Maybe I could sell my bikes..hmmmmm

I thought about a lightweight for a while and again there was one in the paper couple weeks ago and it was a really good buy cause it had loads of mods. But i think when it comes to off roading stick to coil springs. Zuks are really good but uncomfortable, a very cheap way to off road.

My view get a 90 or a Rangie buy a kit to make a dakar or the likes there seems to be more kits avail. I would love to go down this line but lack of space stops me doing this.

And yeah keep Poppy she is cool .

Never say never, Landys appreciate the mud and the scrapes the Rangey even repaired itself after its foray off road, 1 of the lights in the dash started working that didn't before. (lights up the message center). The rims and tyres for mine came to £90 a corner. No what you mean about being glad about no 90's for sale. If I won the lottery I would go and collect all the dead landrovers you see in nettles up and down the country and save them. from what I don't know?

I spotted several Landys sitting in a field out by Craigivar Castle...I can't work out how to get to them without tramping across a couple of fields...from a distance it looks like a couple of 88's, a 109 and maybe a 90..all just sitting there.

There is also one sits near Westburn Park in Aberdeen, kind of a sandy colour..not seen it move in years and years. I see it every day from the front..not sure if its an 88 or 109...but I would not mind finding the owner.

This may be left field but landys could be alien and just waiting to rise and crush everything inferior including the anti 4x4 brigade so I'm going to continue being nice to them. (long days on a tractor and too much coffee)
