Just a post to propose that we (I am happy to start the ball rolling) set up an email ring and all interested people keep in touch. It just seems more sensible than filling up LRUK with our plans which I'm sure are rather boring to the majority of forum members, and take up valuble space.
Now, I'm no expert Greenlaner, so don't think you will be coming along on a free training and navigational excercise, but if all interested parties email the whole group with ideas, 'lanin' runs etc, it could be a good way to promote greenlaning in the Peak District.
My email address is timbott@gmail.com so if anyone thinks this is a god idea and wants to email their email address so I can forward it to other interested people and then................. well I am sure you have got the idea by now
cheers, Tim

Tim, just a couple of thoughts - how will new people find out what's going on in your area, and how does a closed email ring 'promote greenlaning in the Peak District'?

Oh dear, I seem to be getting some stick again, but I do like to try new ideas :)
We have been using too much forum space recently just chatting between ourselves about our little trips out into the Peaks, plus, some people I talk to at BADLRC events like greenlaning but aren't interested in joining LRUK (I have tried!!!)
Hopefully next greenlaning weekend will be the 8 Oct, it has been suggested within the White Peak area, anyone interested???

Just got home myself and repaired my rear light - it was just a blown bulb :)
Quite and easy run, and the weather could have been better, but an enjoyable day was had. Shame you had to leave early Mick, did 2 more rather interesting lanes after you left and then we decided to call it a day. Next run out a run up Sheffield way to Jack the Dog's (Stuart's) territory sounds good to me, maybe middle of next month sometime? Make an early start to make the best of the light and then greenlane our way back home, anyone up for that?
Thanks all for a good day out :yay:

Hi Tim,
To be honest, I do think this would be a good idea to miss it out, one for the summer definitively, although I have wondered about legality anyway. The track does have markers at some points that lead to either side of the track stating no motor vehicles beyond these points so do read it as main track is open etc.
Look forward to doing this one in summer then :)
Anybody else got any thoughts.

If recoveries would be neccessary, I reckon we should leave it out of the route. I dont mind a bit of hard going, but not on public ROWs. Too damaging.
I could do a quick reccy on the saturday to check it out. It's only 15 minutes drive - could check it out on the bike, see what state it's in.
Might do that if the weather's not to bad - see how it goes.

Passenger decided to get out and spot... said the view from his window was...scary so he did the rest of the lane on foot :D

Heh, that was a good day out, after a rather disasterous start:( Oh well that's one coiler going to the knackers yard if you want to look on the bright side:evilgrin:
I reckon we must have broken the record for reversing down greenlanes today:o
Here are my piccies, I didn't take many and they are a bit boring, and have had to play with them in PhotoShop 'cos of poor light (and bigkid's spot lights ******ing up my exposure times - at least he broke one later on so that's one less:D )
And it was nice to do that final lane that was a first for all of us, even if it did get a bit hairy at one point. Nice lane, but boy that surface mud was slippery and very worrying given the terrain one would have slipped into if the God's had had their way, one for the summer me thinks:)
Thanks all for coming along. Christmas run next, courtesy of Cerberus I hope:yay:

Right. The Christmas Run.....
Meet up in the usual A6 layby at 9:00 Tuesday 27th (provisionally)
Do a few lanes on map OL24 and the perhaps try heading west into Staffordshire. Not sure what map I will need, I'll have to do a bit of research.
Simon and I did a few over there last winter-some of the lanes were pretty hairy. They even stumped psycho Matt.
With a bit of luck we will be Laning in snow! Just to be on the safe side, make sure you are properly geared up. If there is snow, bring extra dry socks, boots and plenty of warm clothing. I guarentee there will be a forum snowball fight at some point! Hmmm..... All the Series drivers will already be geared up for the cold!
If you have a camping stove and associated mashing tackle, please bring it along. As I am sure you all discovered tanks to Tim, a hot coffee or soup makes a hell of a difference on a cold day.
Once I work out which map we will need, I will let you all know. If loads of us turn up, we will have to split into two groups so another guide will be needed.
So come on, what happened today?
timbott
27th Nov 2005, 20:31
So come on, what happened today?
errrrrrrm, Kev had a bit of a mishap! We were meeting Stu and Steve at the top end of Stanage, and after looking at the maps, Kev (I'm glad it was his idea!) said it would be quicker if we drove up Stanage to meet them and then come back down, so we did, or tried to!!!
Got half way up the ridge and that place ain't half deteriorated since I was last there. Kev was in the lead and went for it and it went badly wrong when his offside rear radius arm snapped off the chassis. OH ****!!! I phoned Steve and him and Stu drove down from the top to help get Kev out, there was no way we could get him off backwards. A combination of rope and straps and cable ties underneath the Disco kept things roughly in place as we winched the stricken motor up Stanage using Stu's 90 as an anchor point (and me behind the wheel of the Disco, Stu commented it just looked wrong me driving a posh coiler!!!).
And then Stu towed Kev to the top end of Stanage to be rescued by a very nice man, and us three in 109's who had been following Kev decided that 'discretion is the better part of valour' and reversed for about 200 miles (well it felt like it) to get back to the bottom again!!!
Bryn took some piccies and I think he will be posting them here soon.
Glad you got home OK Kev and family, not the sort of incident you will forget in a hurry me thinks. Are you going to mend it or is this the final straw???
cheers, Tim
PS. Dave, Christmas run sounds great, I'll look forward to that:)

Aye, eventful day all round!
The morning didnt exactly go to plan, admittedly, but it was certainly character building! :)
Didn't expect to be dragging anyone off the hill so early in the morning - shame it did happen so early on in the day. Hope your back on the road soon Kev, and glad you got home safe.
What did you tell the AA man? "Well, I was just driving along..." :)
Wasn't sure about the last lane - my tyres seemed to enjoy floating across that surface - I think the 90 was trying to get down the hill via a slightly more direct route than I had planned. Either that or it fancied getting intimate with that gatepost...
Special mention has to be made for the soup - good call guys, much appreciated!
And a big thankyou to Hew for keeping us warm and dry in his pimped up loadbay... :)
And good pics too guys!
Great day laning, nice to see you all. Definately up for the crimbo trip! :)

Good day out 'lanin' today in the snow with Cerberus, Scotana and 3 others that I don't think are members of these forums. I'll post some pics tomorrow (too damn tired tonight) and hopefully Dave will post some soon as well:)
Shame I had to leave you chaps early for my Daughter's 4th birthday, looking forward to hearing and seeing what you got up to after I left.
Just one low spot, the end of one lane was blocked with parked cars, and due to the attitude of the locals I would say it was deliberate. Well we didn't get irate like they obviously wanted but retraced our steps and just left the sad individuals to their rather pathetic behaviour:(

Another cracking day out but not without its problems and a rather sad ending....well for my Landrover anyway :(
The day started well with bright sunshine and snow on the horizon.
Then my 109" started spluttereing to a halt with fuel starvation symptoms. Then it became a ****** to start. Hmm....
A bit later on it quit altogether. Off with the bonnet, out came the spanners and we all gathered around. The fault was traced to a loose alternator belt resulting in no charging and a very dead battery. Of course with no sparks, the electric fuel pump would not work hence the fuel starvation. Timbott came to the rescue with a spare battery and the offending alternator belt was duely temsioned.
Three cheers for Tim. Hip hip hurrah! hip hip hurrah! etc!
Then, on the last lane after Tim had left us, it all went horribly wrong. After a hitting a particularly hard lump, the steering kicked over and the steering wheel wasn'y centered anymore.
"******!" Thinks I, "I reckon I've bent my track control arm again. No worries, I'll get the bottles and a big hammer out when I get home and straighten it."
Then as I bounced along the next lane, I noticed a heavy vibration and the sound of tyres on bodywork. then the steering kicked over and stayed there. Not good.
Turns out I've managed to snap both front dumb irons.:( times alot!
So thats my Landrover off the road for at least a month. :( times 10 to the power infinity!
Anyhoo. Here are a few piccies from the day. Up 'til the point where I broke the Landrover, it was top fun out in the snow. Some of the quicker lanes were...Erm.. Interesting to say the least. I managed to scare my Dad going totally sideways with the rear end hanging out over a sheer drop!:D

Another great days Laning with Paul, Stuart (Jack the Dog) Steve (Bigkid) and Matt (CubleyMatt). A fairly tame days laning BUT for one lane that we did that none of us had ever done before and it was 'tricky' to say the least. To say I had a scary time is an understatement and hopefully pictures will follow of my little incident later on but I'll leave the others to tell you all about it 'cos they were watching, I was just driving (supposedly) :scared:

I really wish I could have come with you-I have not done some of those lanes and some of them look like real fun!
I think everyone who does the lanes will have at least one hairy moment during their lifetime. I managed to get mine over with on my very first trip out! I'm sure Tim will remember.
Sadly my 109 is still very broken from the last trip. There is just too much month left at the end of the money at the moment :( Should be fixed for the next trip though.

i looked at the video that Emma had taken of me at bakewell, just towards the end of the crossing my landy moves very hard towards the bridge, i think that was the moment it went, I will get the Vids on my streaming server on Monday !

Then just went for it... got to the other side no problems....but there was a sauna when I got to the other side, Matt was ready and in action with the big can of WD40 :D

All in the bow wave . Looking at some of the pic's i moved further away from the bridge to go in the deeper water . The water is bubbling all over the front of the bonnet but has dipped right under the snorkel .Giving the impression that there isn't that much water in the engine bay ..
Look at some of steve's pics he had water up to the top of the headlights at one point but the side of the wing's were nowhere near as deep ..

Matt, tracks that show as Green 'long' dash 'short' dash 'long' dash are ok to drive on (somebody correct me) Green Cross Dash Green Cross are ok, 'Tracks' on 'Access' land
What with the recent CROW atc (thats Countryside Rights Of Way to you folk) we are actually allowed on more tracks/paths then a few years ago,
Just been on a weekend leaders course around Hagg Farm on Snake pass, some really really good lanes there.
Even ended up having a 'Debate' regarding use by 4x4's Motorcycles and get this even Mountain Bikes!!! Seems that most Walkers will tolerate the 4x4 crowd when they act like we do..we both (walkers and 4x4'er) seem to have the same dis-passion against the Biker boys..:D
Anyway Matt, sorry went off thread there a bit, I have to make a trip up to Timbotts ASAP so could call thru and give ya a hand if ya want.

Ahh well, this is when you techno freaks find you are actually making the job more difficult for yourselves. Personally I doubt I will ever use anything other than a printed map and a highlighter pen, which is dead easy to copy from other peoples maps in the pub.

Matt, there is a lane you can do on the Derby side of Brailsford off the A52. If I remember correctly, its on the right as you are just coming into Brailsford. It is at an acute angle coming back towards Derby. Its a nice little lane that we use for shake down runs and for testing on. Just be careful though: Last time I was down there, about half way down, a tree had snapped off leaving a jagged trunk poking out into the lane. I slid sideways in the mud and very nearly tore a hole in the side of my 109. There is a nice fella who lives in a gorgeous house at the end of the lane-he always gives a cheery wave and nod as we tootle past.
'Twas quite funny when we emered out the other side tyres all covered in mud. A lunatic in an open topped Jag XK came ear'oleing around the blind corner only to be confronted with two slow moving Landrovers. He then proceded to toot his horn and give rude gestures. If he drove any closer to me he would be parked in the back!
So we put our foot down hard.
Those who drive a Series will know that it is possible to spin up the back MTs when they are all wet and muddy. He soon backed off as big clumps of Derbyshire landed on his shiney bonnet and nice leather seats through his convertable roof!
Irresponsible? perhaps...Funny? deffinately!:D

Hi Chaps and Chappettes,
What ever lanes you do could you bung me a copy of the MM overlay. I'd be interested in any lanes South Derbyshire / Ashbourne area. Relatively new to laning , just taken the 101 down Stanage at the weekend
http://www.lrproject.com/pictures/derbyshire/
with some chaps from the MCUK forum
Also interested in any lanes the 101 Ambi will fit down, not too bumpy as I don't want to scare the inhabitants as much as on Stanage

Good man, for doing Stanedge.;) excellent, I am willing to give you the MM overlay in return for a ride in the 101, been wanting one of those for years. Just not got 1\ the room to keep it safe and 2 the money to keep it going.
I am planning a few routes over the next couple of months and will keep your height and little extra width in mind.
Now you've started you will not want to stop, especially with Drum brakes all round :D

after the stanage trip hew dropped a stud from the manifold and started to run real bad, fixed the stud but was still running very lumpy. The tuning was always a bit dodgy (think the dizzy isnt the best) so tried to give it ago...nothing worked...changed all the electickery bits and it got rid of the lumpyness...however the timing is now way out so its really hard to start and backfires after turning off after a trip...
im thinking about getting one of the ACE electronic dizzys for £90 save all the hassle ive been having :)

Hi Guys,
Having spent a wonderful evening up at Timbotts (cheers for the grub Ali, top stuff) turning Paper Highlighted Lanes on to Electronic Routes, I now have '100' lanes as an overlay for Memory-Map :D
Having though about this, I have decided NOT to stick the overlay on the forum for all to retrieve. So if you want a copy please PM me and I will be happy to send a copy to you.
As a disclaimer..Not all routes have been verified as Legitimate RUPPS or Byways. Some have come from local knowledge, some from Club maps (which you would have thought were verified:rolleyes: ) Therefore should you wish to traverse these lanes, you do so under your own responsibility.
Cheers Tim, Ali - Next time its the Dark Peak ;)

**WARNING - BIGKID MAYBE LOOSING HIS MIND **
Help me please, just seen that theres a nice Disco 3.9V8 on sale in this here forum.. and I am having thoughts about buying it.
As much as I love my 90 it does not have the practicality that I now want, so when I saw this I started thinking (always dangerous I know:rolleyes: ) If I could afford to keep both I would, but really dont think that would be an option
So come on, either talk me out of it or give me reasons for it.
A few Questions:-
1\ Looking at dimensions of a disco they are shorter than a 110 but longer than a 90, as wide (just 3mm over) as 90/110 and lower. Therefore what are they like off road...
2\ Can I pimp it as easy as you can a 90/110
3\ Am I loosing my mind really or just growing up!
Cheers Guys, for you advanced wisdom ;)

Ok so its not a Volvo Discos are very good motors and i have to say i was looking at that one, if only i had some cash :D or the wife would let me sell the A6, :(
1, the disco is only just wider than the 90 but you have to think, if you rip the arches off the 90 you can just put some new ones on, if you damage the bodywork on the disco, you have to start thinking paint etc to keep it looking good on the road as your every day motor,
2, Yes theres loads of bits about for the disco to Pimp your ride as much as there is for the 90 !
3, Both
My thoughts, go for it, keep both for a couple of months and see which you like the best ! if not, call my wife tell her to let me sell the A6 and i will have the disco !! ;) :D

So come on, either talk me out of it or give me reasons for it.
Forum member colintandy has a nice tricked up Disco. There's a few pics of it in the gallery: http://www.landrovernet.com/gallery/showimage.php?i=326&c=10
Looks nice I reckon. They always do when they're kitted up. There's plenty of stuff for them - there seems to be a Disco version of pretty much all the kit you can get for Defenders.
I'm a big disco fan to be honest. Looked round a few with a mate when he was considering buying one. When driving, they felt like Bentleys compared with the 90.
The way I see it...
Pros: They'll handle all the off road stuff your likely to throw at it out on the lanes. Quieter. Comfier. Easier to get in and out. More space. More seats. Far more practical. Generally a better day-to-day car. Far, far better value for money.
Cons: It's just not a Defender.
I know this wasn't the query, so forgive me for sticking my oar in, but is petrol a specific requirement? Is it - or will it end up - converted to LPG? What about buying an oil burner instead?
Pros: No WD40 fest required. No performance drop of any relevance (remember our rat run round Stanage?). Torquey as you like. No LPG tanks taking up space.
Cons: It's just not a V8. I know you like your V8s... :)
Bigkid
6th Mar 2006, 12:15
Yes its already LPG'd running better MPG than mine too. £70 = 600miles mine would be nearly £100 for the same milage.
Having mixed views from differing areas, some are 'yeah' go for it, others are asking me 'why'
Think I have a 55%-yes 45%-no feeling at the mo, would like to do what cubbleymatt suggests and keep both for a while but dont think I could afford to do that, would end up keeping both for ever!!
The Disco does seem more practical, I am asking myself the right questions.....
What do I use the Defender for, can I use the disco the same, is the Defender more reliable:eek: , its an early Disco (arent they prone to breakdown etc)
Anyway, keep the thoughts coming,

Doing sort of a < shape
Chatsworth to Bakewell heading over to Birchover, Youlgreave, Hartington, Tissington
Got 18 Lanes to drive, the last is a biggie but if memory recalls is very rutty could be interesting, I followed Shadyadie in his V8 Hybrid and a Suzuki SJ.
Theres also a nice long lane from Newhaven to Brassington.
