That's like saying Marlon Brando got fat and stopped doing good films in his later years. While it is true, it didn't stop him being the daddy.

I’m not disputing that Tim is the 'daddy' of greenlaning but alas he has moved on.
In Tim's absence we also have to move on.

I understand that we don't all have the experience of organising days like Tim but it would be nice to try without fear of retribution because we're not doing it right or whether our suggested days flop! Everyone does things differently!

Respect to Tim because he is the 'daddy' but Tim please give us chance to organsie things our way! ;)

I know I probably do tend to stick my nose in a bit too much which I am sorry for, but, what happened to Bigkid, he copied all my info and then disappeared:confused:

I promise I will never organise another days greenlaning in the Peak District, but any advice gladly given so it can move on. It is a bit potty me doing stuff for Derbyshire when I live in Pembrokeshire.

Now, mid Wales, June, anyone up for it? And don't forget, mid Wales from here is about the same distance as mid Wales is from Derby before you lot start moaning:eek:

cheers, Tim

Jeff, mungo, widget, Scott???

ada as requested that we do Stanage. I've haven't done stanage either so would also be keen. Any preferences about the direction that we do it (up or down)?

I propose that we meet at the Greenbus on the A6 between ambergate and whatstandwell at 8.30 for a 9.00 start. I will put together a route over the next week or so and post grids and mem-map overlay for all.

Anyone else interested?

Put me down as a definite maybe:) :)

Stanage is easier coming down, so would perhaps do south to north across Burbage moor from the Fox pub to Lady Cannings Plantation - then Stanage from west to east.

If it's fun you can always turn around and go up it again!!

I would advise a quick recce of stanage before it is driven . Mainly because mountain rescue use it for training with ropes and abseil rescues etc .I'm pretty sure the last thing they need is a gaggle of landrovers getting in the way , fair enough it's a legal green lane but i'd rather leave them to it and stay out of the way .
There is a road that runs below it , have a quick looksie and see who is up there .
Road runs from SK 226 843 sw to SK 245 828 .That road covers the length of most of the rocky section on stanage which will take the longest to get through, from the road you can get a good idea how busy it is up there. There isn't a great deal of room on that part of the lane , even less if it's got mountain rescue training on it .
If it's decided it's too busy ,it doesn't matter there is lots of other good lanes around that area .

Great minds.....

Had a quick recce of Stanage Edge on Saturday morning. The lane is busy but passable with a couple of tricky steps in the middle. Plenty of Hikers, Moutain Bikers and crossers all enjoying and sharing the experience.

Even picked up some bits of motors littered around (bumpers, mudgauards and various other 4x4 rubbish) and bought it back with me. Must be getting all responsible in my old age!

You driven it before?

I don't like being cold , warm and nice and snug is how i like it .
The times i went cold , very very cold , soaked to the skin in sub zero conditions from lieing in the snow whilst i was in the army .
The day i left i said to myself i would never go pointlessly cold ever again .
Now i'm a cold **** , even the slightest breeze with a chill to it and i've got my rugs on :D :D

At the moment i'm with a bouncy truck .
On the way home from work this morning i went over a speed bump with probably a bit too much haste and my rear o/s damper has sheared off the nut and thrown my bushes ,caps and nut away , also knackering the thread on the damper .
I'm going to get in touch with my local specialist and shb 4x4 hire and see if they have cappings and bushes , i've got a spare damper in the shed but without cappings and lower bushes :D
I'd even get a new damper for the price they are .
Worst case scenario is they have no parts and i can't go laning , unless some of you that are going have some spare cappings and bushes and i can bounce to the green bus and then get a damper fitted .
Does anyone know what size the top and bottom damper nuts are ?

I'll keep you updated as the hours go by

I would have come tomorrow but I am tied up with other things and also getting to the other side of Matlock for before 9 is a pain, after all in february I was late to Beeley. May be next time, especially if the meet is a little nearer the middle of the PD.

Stanage is fun, I did it in October and was a little concerned about how close my fuel tank (no after market guard on it) was getting to some of the rocks. One of the problems of 205s on a 90.

Laninlandy
24th Mar 2007, 06:33
You shouldn't need any waffles on stanage with they tyres and lifts you lot have got .
I had some shoved under me when i did it , i was on 205's and road tyres though :D .With the tyres and lift they have given me (tyre diameter over 205's)then i wouldn't expect to need them .
I'm still toying with the idea of running upto paddocks , they open at 08:30 and meeting up on one of the lanes .
I'm convincing myself it's not worth the risk of boucing down the A38 and country lanes , bloody thing is all over the place :D
Have fun .

We all managed it sucessfully with only a bent steering rod and a couple of missplaced springs.

Didn't take many pics but will post them later.

So when we goin again? LaninLandy???

Gutted. Spent an hour or so at DLS. Paul put it up on a ramp, ran it to 50 mph and we had a listen and a look. There are a few things wrong, a worn wheelbearing on the nearside front, a wobbly UJ and a noisy front diff. Take your pick!

The wheel bearing is biggest suspect, spending the night with brother in Sheffield now and back tomorrow at a very slow pace.

Even though I couldn't lane today, thanks for the open invite Chris - nice to meet you at last. There will always be a next time, and as said - I'll travel miles to go laning!

No shame getting stuck. Where and how though?:)

I wasn't so much stuck as stranded...The trucks with bigger tyres left the ruts so deep the old girl just bellied out and sat there...The wheels were so far off the ground I could have changed a flat tyre:D

From what I can make out through various forums chaple gate is not a legal route anymore but the wardens in the area are encouraging people to drive it to keep it is a usable condition as status is soon to be changed....have not driven it for years myself but from piccies it looks worse than stannage now so would not advise a solo attempt ....if you can wait till folowing weekend Ill be in that area and can join you...If not was always easiest heading NE

The other one tom moor-beet farm is known as roych clough (thought you did that on one of the other trips I was on ...probably me loosing it) Couple of reasonable steps and a decent slope made from flat rock slabs (SK 076 834) which can be a bit tricky in wet....Head NW anytime or SE when wet at east that way you will know how slippy the rock slabs are at the bottom & not from the top:eek:

Laninlandy
25th Apr 2007, 06:07
Not much at all Manifold valley way , there is a couple around ashbournish way and up towards Buxton .None that we have never done before . The only one i can think of up near buxton is old maccesfield road , the one across the golf course :D and of course those dotted around hollinsclough .
Manifold valley looks like it has loads of stuff when you look on the map but they are all cycle routes .
The routes around Hartington are more less perfectly flat and covered in the horrible dusty hardcore surface .
The best areas without going too far seem to be around Matlock,Bakewell, and moving across to Tideswell and Buxton .
Plenty of pubs to choose from to :D :D

I never tire of doing the ones we have done before anyway, they are always good . ;)

Chapel gate wants checking out with the ROW dept anyway .It's marked on 1:50 000 as a Bridleway .Even if it did have legal Vehicle access before the NERC bill it probably hasn't now .Being a green lane and a bridleway the nerc bill has it as dual status , vehicles lose the right of use .

I have it down on a 1:50 000 as an ORPA , but it does form part of the peninne bridleway .IIRC there is a sign at the Mam tor side of roych that say's it's a bridleway , so again it does ,as you say bring the legality of driving it into question.
I'll phone the head honcho on Friday and see if he has his thumb out of his backside this time . :D

Chapel Gate has very strong evidence in it's favour - i.e. the tarmac strip up the centre is a bit of a pointer that it is a road which primary use was for MPVs. A walk first is a very good idea to plan ahead.

I'm not aware of any restriction on Roych Clough, it's a well established road.

Neither road is part of the long distance path - Pennine Way. Finger posts are no indication to the status of a road, just pure obfuscation for the benefit of no-one.:D

Could you send me a copy!

Laninlandy

Then you have to prove it's incorrectly marked and how do you do that ?
Take Bakewell ford for example , now closed to vehicles , how is that possible ? Clearly it is an old cart track through the river .On the map it shows as a bridleway , the council have ruled it is closed to vehicles and should have been for some time .
How can you prove any different ? Will people listen anyway ?
The PDNPA will probably be looking at lane usage quite closely in the near future with being given the powers to TRO or permanently close a lane .
If they see you on chapel gate and they look on a map and it shows as a bridleway as it does , you are going to court !
Then you have to prove it's incorrectly marked . Better to phone the ROW bloke and get clarification before using it again .
Same with roych , get the all clear and go for it .
There are other lanes in the peaks that are clearly marked roads , these are RUPPS and they are now closed because of the Nerc bill .
I'd rather have any lanes that we are unsure of checked for legality , for one i don't want to end up in court over it and two worst case scenario i don't want to lose my vehicle  .

Hi Guys

Here are rights of way details for Chapel Gate and Roych Clough.

"The Chapelgate track is recorded as a Byway Open to All Traffic (BOAT) on the definitive map of public rights of way for Derbyshire. As such it can be used by the public with vehicles as well as by walkers, horseriders and cyclists; however, as I explained in our telephone conversation, the route is severely damaged at the moment making access for certain types of user difficult."

"The majority of Roych Road is recorded on the County Council’s highway records as a non-classified highway (often termed by other authorities as unclassified county road or UCR), the exception being the northern end near Hayfield which is a public bridleway. I can’t confirm the existence of public vehicular rights over the ’non-bridleway’ section of Roych Road because these categories do not point to any particular highway status."

Thank you Peter for your help! :D

So both OS maps are wrong with chapelgate:rolleyes:

It goes show that you can't really trust the OS maps with regards to rights of way. It does say on OS maps though:

The representation on this map of any other road, track or path is no eveidence of the existence of a right of way

so they do have themselves covered, although in this case they appear to have downgraded a track:rolleyes:

Have developed a very scary, intermittent and agresssive vibration on the front wheels . Thought initially it was the steering damper and changed it over the weekend which appeared to fix it bit alas on the way home yesterday it returned.

Track Rod ends are fine, replaced them recentley with steering and track bars. Replaced damper at weekend, which seamed to cure it but just before i got home (after a two hour journey) i had a minor vibration, nothing as serious as before but a vibration all the same.

As for it being off, will have to see if i can fix it before now and Saturday...Got a bit of time to do the repairs

My truck is still shaking like a foodmixer. It's been in the garage having props removed to diagnose since yesterday. But there is still no diagnosis :Idunno:

So I'm out:nonono: . Just when the weather gets good too. Might take up drinking cos I hate football.:drunk:

I might go and visit Bob on Saturday and look at his broken truck instead.:(

Got to see Vince's Moroccan "holiday snaps" last weekend - Morocco looks just awesome, just can't justify two weeks and a large amount of cash to do one of his Desert Storm adventures :(

Incidentally this was with the D3 crowd at Rockingham (Protrax Adventure Weekend) - great weekend - will post photos if anyone's interested.

FYI - the D3 mob are out in the Peaks again on Sunday 8th July ...

Buxton and District Land Rover Club are holding a public play weekend at Hartington Quarry over the sunday and monday of the coming bank holiday weekend, so if no greenlaning trips are planned and you want to put the new wheels through their paces, there's the perfect opportunity :)

Check out www.bardlrc.co.uk for details if you're interested. Website's awful but the events are pretty good :D

I haven't been to one this year now I live away from Derbyshire so I don't know about recent attendance, but the quarry that the club uses has a bit of everything in terms of driving ability from a gentle meander to stuff (The Mountain) that even as a passenger scares the wotsits off me:eek:

It's only a small quarry, but there's plenty to go at for all motors. Nothing too silly. Unlike some play-days I've attended, the BADLRC ones don't attract idiots in scrapper suzukis hammering around causing chaos, thankfully. BADLRC are an MSA affiliated club or whatever it is, so pratting around isn't the dish of the day.

It's just a bit of a family day out really, run by local enthusiasts. Fully marshalled (by more than a few members of this forum) and attendance is dependant on the weather. They're the biggest events on the BADLRC calendar, so most of the club members do the marshalling and will be out there camping in the field alongside whatever the weather cos they're obviously all mad.

So yeah, if you see my tent, give us a shout and say hi :D

Yep - new shoes!
Loved the Kumhos but alas they were a little bit small....
The BFG's are 33" and fill the landies wheel arches....The Kumho's 31" looked a little lost with the 2" lift.
Am considering selling the 6 month old BFG's now that Kumho have some 33" in the UK.

It's getting to the point it needs new shoes , my muds have been on two and a half years , the tread is still well into being legal but for offroad use there ain't much left .
The modulars have had the grey paint chipped off them here and there so could do with a spruce up , and I fancy changing them to black .

Been looking at 110 county double cab pickups of the TD5 variety ..
Found a good one not long back but is was miles and miles away .
