View Full Version : Sheffield Lanes

This evening I spent a most enjoyable couple of hours tooteling around the Ringinglow area of Sheffield, just me, Granny and my eldest.
We went along Houndkirk Moor and turned around at Parson's House farm with the intention of going back and up Lady Cannings Plantation, but I didn't like the look of LCP as the first 100m or so are quite badly rutted, would have prob tried it if with someone else's 4x4 there to back me up, but you should allways remember rule no1 " know your limitations" and in my case I know that the Disco is far more capable than I.
Any way drove back to startpoint and across the road to Porter Clough, now I would not do this lane if you in any way care about the paintwork of your car, getting very over grown and not many turn round points( less if in a bigger vehical).
Granny very much enjoyed herself and wants to go again some time, as she wouldent get to see the view like there is from anywhere else around here, and she couldn't walk from either end to middle.
for your info both lanes are hard base/ rock for all their lengths and are prob drivable all year.

Nice pictures :)
Sounds like you had a nice evening out.

I once went down Porter Clough in the 90 and near the bottom end where it really narrows at a tight bend the path was blocked by a fallen tree. I had to reverse the entire way back up the lane. Not fun :)

Did you ever get around do doing the lane just off Manchester Road - the one with the really narrow gate half way up?

Yes was a nice way to spend a few hours.

Not yet, I plan a visit with a tape measure soon, but acording to the numbers there is only a couple of mm between my disco and your 90, I supose body length may make a differance?

The width itself would probably be okay were it not for the uneven ground. The car ends up leaning quiet a bit, and the bit I was worried about was catching was the rear side panel on the top of the gatepost.

As the 90 narrows a bit above the shoulder-line it fits through okay, but I'd be a little worried about the rear of the Disco, as it's a little bit wider behind the rear doors.

Maybe using a bridging ladder or something similar would allow the car to travel through in a more upright position, but that seems a bit 'Camel Trophy' overkill for a local lane near a posh housing estate...

The top bit is good though, really narrow so would scare those on the passenger side - it's bloody high up in places :)

Speaking of ford crossings, did you ever drive the ford at Low Bradfield? I've
been wanting to drive that for ages but it's been closed off for ages now.

And if it's closed off for the building of the new Bradfield Village Hall, chances are it'll stay like that for the forseeable future, as from what I can gather the parish council never secured enough money to finish the project

I presume you meen the one on "The Sands"?, have been trying to get in touch with the BPC rights of way peeps, no one ever gets backto me on the legalaty of this lane.
Just checked Wayfinder and not shown???
May send an e-mail to the derbyshire rep to see if he know's owt.
Just checked the A-Z and it shows it as a "rural track, private road" so that helped clear that up then

and yes Coppice Rd is WTF  scary on the downhill side. but i bet its a brill lane to drive all the way :D

Have you tried the ford at *****tone?

You would have ****ed the plantation , its only that initial hump to get up and afew yards of ruts and its basically flat and pretty much a hard surface .
But like you say better to be safe than sorry

No, wasn't aware of the ford at *****tone. Will have to have a scan of the OS this evening and track it down. I should explore that area a little more - up towards Emley I hear there's some good tracks too.

Here's a picture of *****tone ford (http://community.webshots.com/photo/79656053/235785504jVzjYq) for you perusal.

There's nothing much at Emley, just a couple of RUPP's that cars use for access to houses.
There's some nice lanes aound Holmfirth/Holm-Moss though
Hirst Lane. Park Lane, Ramsden Lane, Scaleygate*, etc...

*Scaleygate is on the My Old Land Rovers pages (as 'Full Twist')
