It's still officially closed to vehicles, in fact, I've been talking to the Council today. They anticipate being able to start repairs in mid August, so it will be re-opened shortly after. Should take about 1 week once they start. They can't start because of protected birds nesting close to the road (and they ARE rare birds!). A bit of patience and we'll soon have a brilliant drive available again.

I hope there isn't a mad stampede once they declare it open though - I'm going to stay away for a while.

I think thats a good idea...

if everyone goes at once it will end up 40 4x4's and as sure as eggs are eggs a picture would end up in the local press dipicting it as a normal day !!!

will check back September to see what happens ... unless something happens in mean time..

I've written them a letter pointing out that the birds in question have now left the nest and are hunting (I've spent quite some time watching them- beautiful creatures!) so that no longer applies, and that everyone is working to a re-opening date of mid to late August. I've hinted that use is likely to increase after that, regardless of the legal situation and that it would be a good idea to get it fixed ASAP, especially since we're being fortunate with the weather. I'm hoping for some good news next week.

Out of interest what birds are they? if they are that rare I would have to guess red kites or something!

Oh ye of little faith!!! Now gather round and pay attention!!
I've today received a letter from Wrexham Council stating that, the birds (Merlins) having left the nest, repairs will commence on Monday 22nd. They expect to have this road open for use on Saturday 27th August, and they have asked that their thanks be passed on to 'the various interested groups who have been extremely patient and understanding'.
Obviously, foul weather could affect repairs, so I shall be 'phoning the Council on Friday to confirm the Saturday, and I shall post on here.

Thanks for keeping us informed. That’s great news that it may be open again soon. I’m not going to be driving it just yet though. I’ll let it settle down a little first; don’t want everyone on there at once. Good news though and thanks for your efforts to keep us up to date

Apparently it's open, but not very well repaired.

" The Wayfarer is now open and driveable, but and its a bit but. Drive it now or as soon as you can.

A friend and my self drove it tonight. The state of repairs that have been done need a lot tobe desired. The have repleased some of the sleepers, but they move a lot when you drive over them. The second lot of sleepers have been filled at each end by MUD.

On the subject of MUD, the people that have driven it before will know the big hole just after the gate before the summit. It too has just been filled with MUD.

Now there was just the two of us driving it. You could tell right away where we had driven.

So take notice, I think there will be another TRO on it before long."

Borrowed fron another forum;)

I've phoned Wrexham Council today and most of the Highways Dept are on holiday. However they say the official schedule of completing repairs so that it can be officially re-opened to traffic for this week-end can be adhered to. I expect they will still be working today.
I'm going up there tomorrow for a look around.

As to the liklihood of another TRO, if people insist on driving routes when a TRO IS in existence, then total closure wouldn't surprise me. Well done LROI!!

Right!! The Wayfarer is definitely open for business again!
Given that the Council have only had one week in which to carry out repairs, I feel that they've done a good job! There is one section of about ten or fifteen feet that needs some more hardcore laying ( by a short stretch of sleepers they laid over a hole they made digging out a JCB that got stuck!), but that's really about it. The quagmire has been graded and drainage improved, and the original sleeper section has been repaired. I'm not worried about the sleeper repairs as I feel they'll bed in with use, and the graded quagmire should be ok, although we'll need some rain to see for sure! The mess resulting from the work needs time to blend in, and that'll take a few months, but it will do so.
I get the impression that the Council have gone hell for leather at the repairs in order to have the road open for this weekend, and for that they deserve congratulations. However, as the end result isn't really up to their normal standards, I feel that they've got more to do, and are probably aware of that fact. I shall be contacting them again this coming week to clarify that.
In the meantime, my favourite drive is back in use, and I'm happy!!

If you go onto it from the Cynwyd/Llandrillo end, pick up some of the breeze blocks and stones lying around at the top and drop them in the ruts by the first sleepers you come to. I think that's the only way we're going to firm that bit up, and it's what I'll be doing next time I'm up there. Your Landy can carry more than my Niva!!!

Afraid they're not being sensible! Told today about 2x LR90's and 2x LR 110's, all dark coloured, seen ploughing through a mud hole that has been created right at the top, on what used to be a pleasant picnic spot. This is right by the plaque, which is where everyone stops for a break and a butty, but now it's one step short of being a general mud bath. Unfortunately, the person who told me didn't get any numbers, otherwise they would be reported to the Police.
Precisely the sort of *******es we really don't need!

this is bad! really really bad :( the council will have NO hesitation in a closure if this carries on. personally i think this lane will end up with a seasonal TRO on it like bishop benetts way in cheshire. that would give the terrain time to recouperate over the winter months. damn them responsible :*****: i love that lane :(

We could always monitor it ourselves and report any abusers, or maybe a motion detecting camera to catch them SOBs at it! Maybe a gatso camera that just logs every no. plate that goes through there!

Just got back from up that area today. Met a farmer who wouldn't stop talking, two Rambler types (as opposed to Walker types) who were totally confused by James (my 4' stuffed Panda passenger), and a ram with it's head stuck in a fence (released it - my good deed for the day!). The bit at the top is a disgrace, and the rest is fine (apart from the Council hole), although a bit messy from the digging. That will sort itself out with a little time, and I'm going to try to get the Council to sort their hole on the grounds that they did it! I think the traffic volume in the area has actually decreased - at least the tracks look less used than they used to. Still a nice area though.

Damn, I'm probably going down to Rhayader that weekend, but if you fancy the week after I'd be up for it as I've not as yet done the Wayfarer, it's on my to do list while it's still possible. Perhaps Ant could come too in his banana wagon ;)

Talked to the Wrexham Highways Authority yesterday and they have had complaints already about cowboy off-roaders leaving the track and playing around on the hills etc.

These to$$ers are going to ruin it for everyone. All the council have to do is say 'more damage' and stick another TRO on it.

Strange Rover
9th Nov 2005, 20:28
Now that would be a shame!
I have now driven it for the first time on Sunday me in my disco and a mate in a stock 110 53 plate...

Nice drive even with all the water it was easy to drive, but I guess some people see the hills as a place to play in mud because they are too tight to pay for a pay and play site..

What's more some one has stolen the box at the top !
Its been replaced with a new one, but wht do **** heads have to end up ruining it for the majority !

Mike_Hammond
9th Nov 2005, 21:45
Instead of TROing it, which won't stop the D'heads the local constab need to get on the case and make examples of them, either that of we need to go up there and fence the track off from the surrounding area

steve@offroadin
9th Nov 2005, 22:03
will check with hoodoo about this, I have loads of spare fencing bits, if the council let us we could fence off the mud run at the top

Strange Rover
9th Nov 2005, 22:33
I'm willing to lend labour to help protect our lanes !

It anoys me that people wreck te place for their fun rather than go to a site to do it,

I go to sites to go wild and make mud, I go to lanes to take family for a day out and really do not want to loose it !

No dobt though the council will object to private individuals putting up fences on some health and saftey issue.... sad world isn't it...

Who owns the land up there? they would be able to allow fences to be put on their private land.

Hoodoo
10th Nov 2005, 20:25
I'll check with the Council, but I think the trespass they told Gurkha about is probably the knoll at the top by the plaque, which I have asked them to fill on several occasions. They have failed to do so, even though they had the equipment up there when carrying out repairs to the road itself. I think that's the best option, as fences etc would last until the installers had gone, and no longer!
I'm not aware of people driving elsewhere - at least I've seen no sign of vehicles wandering anywhere else.

Strange Rover
10th Nov 2005, 20:43
If thats the only problem it does not interfere with the main route at all,
I know its not the point but why can it not be ignored, and that way the rest of the lane is used properly ????

just a thought ??

TheGurkha
10th Nov 2005, 21:29
It's not fences we need it's mines.

The problem with the trespass is it gives more impetus to the organisations that exist who wish to ban all 4x4 recreational use in the countryside.

This sort of thing gets new recruits joining the anti's, makes the existing anti's fire off more letters to MP's, the authorities etc.

Ultimately it threatens all future greenlane use - not just the Wayfarer.

Hoodoo
11th Nov 2005, 18:33
I agree. I did have a disagreement with three motor cyclists who were riding on footpaths up there a little while back - perhaps someone else saw them and complained?
Having said that, I think that knoll is in Denbighshire, not Wrexham - I'll have to check on that.
Regards,
