Trying to get a date organised for derbyshire members and any others that are interested in a day out in the peaks ..

I,m free any weekend except the weekend of the 6th 7th august..
A preferable date for me would be the weekend coming up 30th 31st july .
I know timbott can't make that weekend , is anyone else able to make next weekend ..
If you can make next weekend then stick your name down in the usual copy and paste fashion .
I,ve suggested doing hathersage , bamford , stanage edge ( need to confirm with the council if this is open or not to vehicles ... cheers tim ) and then make a way back down the A6 and if there is time do a few down there .
A meeting place could either be the big lay by on the A6 at ambergate iirc???
or at the fox house pub up hathersage way . Dinner timeish ...
Its all speculation at the moment so any other suggestions for lanes , where to meet and times would be good , but need to sort stuff out sharpish if it,s going to be next weekend ..
(copy and paste vv )
Who can do next weekend .

Paul,

Do you fancy arranging another date to do those lanes. I’ll be up for it if the date is suitable. After Aug bank holiday weekend I should be free most weekends.

I fancy a bit of that. I missed out on laning this weekend for one reason or another. Mostly due to the fact that I ended up with 2 bedrooms worth of new furniture arriving on the same day!

Where exactly shall we meet and at what time? Tim, are you planning to do a couple of lanes on the way up to Buxton?

BTW,Tim, you wouldnt recongnise that roof you sold Scott-Its now about two feet shorter! He's building quite an interesting machine.

I reckon meet up Buxton somewhere (I'll look at my maps tomorrow) about 10'ish and saunter our way down to the beer shop in Makeney :) We might have to split into groups if we get a lot of vehicles but I have ORDERED ;) Ali to learn map reading this week so we don't get lost :o

I'm definately up for next weekend. It'll be nice to drive a few of the lanes over your way. Its not an area I've really explored, so getting the map marked up would be great!

The 90 is still covered in Hartington's finest gloop, and I'll just about managed to have got it clean and it'll be time to head off road again.

Looking forward to it.

According to my map there is a car park on Goyt's Lane, grid ref. SK 024 752 about 3 miles NW of Buxton that looks a good place to meet up. 10 o'clock Saturday morning OK? At least by meeting up after we have done the road miles I won't be holding all you V8 jockeys up :o

Hi Guys, just a quick check, I have to watch the old fuel gauge ya know  running on a fill up of LPG get about 120miles, coming from south notts (i know not that far away) to get to the car park is 25miles, so how many miles are you expecting to do and where are you finsihing...have to plan where my fuel stops are etc...

Anyone hear violins ;)

Well the plan is to start at Buxton and finish up at Makeney between Belper and Duffield just off the A6. I would say, measure your fuel consumption from where you are to Buxton and double it to take into account the extra you always use when lanin', and then bung a bit more in for good luck

That's what you get for buying a cheapo roof-rack, James. :p

I was in Lewis' OneTen which was right behind James' OneTen. Following it through a very narrow lane, and when it went under a low tree, there was a banging noise and the roof rack started to move backwards and buckle.

I thought it was going to come right off and damage the OneTen's roof. Good job it just pulled along the guttering now.

Richard it was nice to meet up with you yesterday, the people on this forum are a friendly bunch, it's good to meet in the flesh and put names to faces, we look at who's on sometimes and can say met them and as it were cross them off the list! some good freindships are being made, long may it continue!

Had an excellent day, really enjoyed it. Nice to see a few pictures of what Adie's convoy got up to after we got split.

It was also nice to put some faces to names! :)

That was the first laning trip I've done in a group of that size, and it was good to watch the car infront bumping along the track. And into trees...
Nice roofrack James
Not sure about following LPG motors though - that smell just isnt right!

Am I right in thinking I was the only oil burner on the trip?

Some of those lanes were pretty narrow eh. And i'll never forget the sight of the motorbike on the loose gravel trying to stop himself ploughing into the back of the Rangey! Dont think he was expecting us lot parked down that narrow little lane :)

My heart dropped as we pulled into Chatsworth and I saw the police - I was dreading them seeing the state of my tyres. Little did I know they'd stop all the traffic for us to pass through!

Definately up for doing it again some time, and I quite liked the 'play it by ear' style planning. As long as the groups can contact each other :D

Hope another trip is planned soon.
Thanks for getting it all together Tim.

Yeah, stinky... I thought the grey OneTen was running rich on LPG as we could still smell the LPG strongly even when we had dropped back.

Oh, and also, you weren't the only oil burner. Tim's 2A was burning oil too... proper style. :D

Yeah, it's a shame you two had to leave when you did, there were still a nice few lanes to be enjoyed! Unless you are particularly fond of your paintwork...

Nice pics by the way Lewis!

Glad you enjoyed yourself mate :)

I'm currently hunting for a new rack as i type...

As for the LPG smell you get used to it, i don't mind it at all

Didn't see the bike + rangie thing, was that where we were parked just before Lewis left us?

The police officer directing traffic came up to me and asked if we were green laning, and didnt seem in the least bit 'anti' :)

The motorbike incident happened when we were all waiting in the really narrow bit where your dad was assessing the damage to the rack he just clobbered! The bikes were stuck behind us pretty much all along that lane really. :o

Here are a couple of pics I took, wanted to take more but never got the chance.

Had a fab day really, not bad for my 2nd time out laning, following Shadyadie in his rumbler was fun, especially when you see him go down a tight lane and think to yourself, ah I'll have no probs, then seeing the suzuki in all sorts of angles made me thik oh my god what am I doing..

I think, it would have been better to have a bit more organisation, but agree with Shadyadie, mobile no.s would have been a very good idea...and then you could make your own way around..maybe james needs too
a\ slow down and use his rear view mirror a bit more
b\ get his GPS fixed...
c\ get a new roof rack
:D

SK223721--SK235714
Right, +100, left at SK234714--SK238710
Road to SK235697, east through Edensor

The RR definitely needs a bit off T-Cut attention now! Lots of narrow bush action......and a pinch point between stone walls at SK225719 leaving no more than 1" either side of a RR.

Without checking the map from the description i will guess you crossed a farm yard before the nice tight section .. :D I t is a tight one that ..

jackthedog
6th Sep 2005, 08:03
Yep, that sounds like the one - the farm yard is just off the road. In fact the route has an 'unsuitable for motors' sign at the beginning.

Orange V8? Cant say I noticed. Someone brought a mean looking Suzuki out, but I never noticed an orange V8...

Looking at them pics of the 'zook in action made me think what an uncomfortale ride it must be when the tracks get rutted - the narrower axles won't allow the wheels to sit into the ruts. Did your missus have neck ache yesterday? :D

:D :D :D Well i,m not surprised james buckled his roof rack , that lane could do with some pruneing up above . Nothing you can do too much with the sides though what with walls and tree trunks ..
I remember when i did that lane a while back thinking that a disco or a rangie might not get through .. Proven to be wrong ..

Its the bloody, LPG and the vacuum valve thingy, bought a new valve and I think its now over advancing....ie box of tricks is advancing it on Gas over 1500rpm and then the vacuum is advancing it further. Or its running lean on Gas as its backfiring..

Run on Petrol and all seems ok, if not a little bit retarded...going to try blocking the vacuum again and see what the results are.

Had a dyno tune for piece of mind (only £20) and he said it was timed spot on and the points were set right etc.. ;)

Just setup on LPG thats the problem

Hope ya settling in ok over there..

Well blocked the Vacuum pipe, so no vacuum advance and what can I say, I was right. Now that there is no v.adv all seems fine..bit better acceleration than before and less 'exhaust' flapping noise too...

Not sure what this is going to do when running on Petrol so have come up with a cunning plan,

Using one of those fuel pipe solenoid thingys place it in the vacuum line.. when on LPG its shut and when on Petrol its open..just a matter of getting the right polarity I suppose.

Therefore when I switch to gas the vacuum is blocked and the Electronic Power box is doing the timing advance elctronically etc, when switching back to petrol the vaccum is returned to open and then the mechanical advance will kick in..

Any thoughts!!

Bigkid, getting a bit clever....

Did you get another Mallory vac unit?

The vac unit actually retards the ignition when accelerating, or more correctly.....increasing throttle opening.
In theory when running on petrol you'll get some pinking if you have no ign retard.

Your symptoms would say to me that the ign isn't being advanced enough by the whizzo box, and that disconnecting the vac unit is effectively advancing the ign at any given point in the rev range.

We set the timing static on petrol, without the whizzo box, so.........

Try resetting the ign timing to 16BTDC, running on gas, with the vac unit disconnected. You'll have to do it with a timing light as the static method won't allow the whizzo box to do its' thing. The when you switch back to petrol the timing should retard back to 6deg-ish BTDC.
The reconnect the vac unit and go for a blast.

Wierd that it was perfectly happy on either fuel when you left me. How long did it stay that way? Maybe that new coil is actually a ballast type......

Swag, it seems to be running ok with no vacuum on LPG but needs it on petrol.

Will try what you suggest, but had a timing guru dyno it and he said all was fine. in fact it ran fine over night then back to playing up in the morning.

I dont know what to dooo anymore.

Bigkid

swag298
3rd Oct 2005, 19:08
Yep, no vac on lpg is causing the ign to run permanently advanced. Ok for the lpg, but petrol needs the retardation of the vac unit to run anywhere near right.
Re-connecting the vac pipe is retarding the ign sufficiently enough for it to run on petrol......kinda.

You need about 16-18BTDC running on gas and 6BTDC on petrol.
Set up on gas then switch to petrol.
