Hi all,
I'm looking for a set of roller bearings for my gearbox selector shafts. I only need two. Anyone knows from where I can buy a new set, as I already tried at Ciapella (Mosta) and Scicluna SKF. I'm currently waiting for a reply from Muscat motors. Their part number is 55638.
Thanks a lot.

My parts book says its a plunger! I might have one laying around in some can full of junk gearbox bits, but i cannot be sure! i will have to look for it but you can have it for free if i find it. There is no way you will find a new one of those here, your only hope is ciapella in the field or maybe someone who has dead gearboxes like Ratal at blitz! even a rusty one will work fine, just sand the rust down and it will work! Did you lose yours?
If all else fails order one from the uk or go to an engineer and have one made, its a very simple part. Or maybe ask on the series forum for that bit maybe some kind soul will send it to you for free out of a junk box they might have laying around.
In the meantime i will search my junk cans and see if i find it.

i have about three boxes RIP in my garage. if you want come and dismantle one;) maybe you will be lucky and it will be good. i cannot figure out which bearing you want but..have you got an exploded view?? or some pictures?
When you go to buy series parts from ciapella go to Imgarr. there he has got more parts and adrian is more technical and can explain you the job. besided that there are some expert mechanics over there that are very helpful. And i am sure that if he does not have in stock he will order it for you. 100% sure

A question related to the swivel joints of the series 3...
If you take off the hub from the swivel joint will you drain all the oil that lubricates the front diff? I'm asking because I'm seeing an oil leak from my swivel joint (the top and bottom pins were loose)
Thanks

if you take the hub off no oil will drain.
if you take out the swivel about 0.5 litres oil will drop.....you have to drain the swivel first
if you axle is set to be horizontal when the swivel is removed no oil will come out. try to incline the axle on the other side.

Thanks landymaniac. I'll check from where to fill it up again as it was leaking past the swivel joint, due that it wasn't tightened well. By any chance do you know from where to fill it again? What oil should I put in, is it the normal 80W normally used in gearboxes / diffs?
Thanks for your help mate.

Yeps you're right. Once I finish overhauling all 4 wheels I have in mind to take off the steering box and give it an overhaul too. ;)
It's nice to know all bearings and other gadgets are doing their work smoothly in clean oil.
See ya some time for a BBQ

But are they worn down? as thier job is to interlock the selectors. To be honest i never saw a set of worn ones out of the many boxes i dismantled, in fact i always reassemble them back. The only things to replace while you have the top off are the rubber bits or seals (pn 5852) which cover the detent springs and if you can the rubbers on the selector forks (pn 272597/6), as most leaks occur from that area.
Issa swivels, if the chrome on the balls is pitted expect leaks, ideally fill the swivels back up with semi-liquid grease or ep00. If you do rebuild the swivels with new seals and balls then go to ep90 or 140. The oil in the diff should not leak anyway as you have an oilseal at the end of the axle tube, of which its lip will hold any small oil level witin the diff, or do as maniac said jack the side you are working on.

Hi Grem,
Their ends are slightly pitted. If I don't manage to find some new ones I'll refit them. I thought of changing them to make the gear selection slightly smoother.
As regards to the swivel joint, it's not pitted at all but I had the bottom part that holds the steering arm with 4 bolts (passenger side) loose, so oil was leaking. In fact I had some play in the wheel. What I'd like to know is from where to top up the swivel joint oil as I'm sure it needs topping up due to the leak I had.
Thanks once again.

there is a small filler plug like a bolt but with a square head. It is about 1cm each side. Found at the centre of the swivel casing(moulded part where king pins are mounted. you need only about 0.5ltr oil there so that you will be gentle when filling

Those exploded views are of coiler bits maniac! not relevant to a series axle.
