I am up in the lakes next Friday 8th July evening and Saturday 9th and am going to do the Walna Scar road. Can anyone direct me to any other lanes in the general vicinity, Map refs will do, I have Mem Map and TomTom.

Please dont suggest Wayfinder, I am in Glass but cannot make head nor tail of Wayfinder, or I am to lazy to try and figure it out.

I am camping at Sykeside campsite at Brotherswater if anyone fancies meeting up.

Hi Alan, have a look at the Lakes website link

Click on Work of the authority then Access to the countryside.

http://www.lake-district.gov.uk/

Walna Scar road is a nice road rough in parts.

Parkafell is the other side of Coniston lake but I think its still closed.

Hi Alan!
I will be up there for some climbing that weekend. We propose to camp in Great Langdale campsite for the easy access to the crags and the 'Old Peculiar' at the Old Dungeon Ghyll hotel!
There are some good lanes around Tilberthwaite and north of Tarn Howes. The Tilberthwaite lane has to be driven from South to North and is EXTREMELY narrow at the Northern end (very narrow bridge parapets). I can get my 110 over with about two inches spare either side. The lane is not far from Walna Scar, about five miles north of Coniston village.
This leads you to Little Langdale where there is another small lane leading to Elterwater.
The Tarn Howes lane could be linked with this too, and there is a short but sweet lane to Hodge Close Quarry (well worth a detour anyway if you like looking into HUGE holes in the ground!).
Nearer your camp site is the Garburn Pass, but you need to book a permit for this through the national park. It is an excellent lane though!

I hope you enjoy the weekend. I would love to drive the Walna Scar road too, but am already committed to dangling from ropes!

Thanks for the info. I didnt make it to the lakes as my brakes needed a complete overhaul. My wife went up with the kisd and had a great weekend in the sun, hopefully it was a bit cooler on the crags. I have been fried many times over the years, not to often in the UK though. We had a group of climbers, walkers etc at Brotherswater and they seemed to get a lot in.

What grade do you climb, are you a leader?

I used to climb E15B all day every day but although I can still do it I am happier at HVS cos I dont climb regularly enough now, maybe 3or 4 times a year and wall in the winter.

Hi Alan,

It was a scorcher - we were on Gimmer Crag which faces South West - no shade there! I am a little red now.

I am not a very advanced climber... HVS is about my limit, although I am sure I could improve with more practice! I have only ever led a couple of V-Diff single pitches in the past. I am so often with much better climbers that it is easier and quicker to follow them up.

Cheers for now, and hope the brakes work better now!
