Are you sure it is the gearbox, clocking is normally because of wear in a propshaft joint.. Gearboxes normally work perfectly without a fault until they go bang and stop working all together...

Ahh....

did not know that, some one who heard it said it sounded like the transfer box...

I do have a pair of range rover V8 prop shafts.....

should they fit the 200TDi disco ?

it will be the input gear splines

Hi,

You did give it a fair old work-out on Sunday!

Prop shaft universal joints are easy enough to check and rule-out. Just get under there and poke a pry-bar through the yolks and try to rotate. Any play means you have a duff UJ.
If it turns-out to be transfer box, I have one in the garage. But for now, more diagnosis is required.

Fingers crossed. Cheers, Neil.

Hi Neil,

you have heard it..

I would not care to hazard a guess. Better to investigate. Rest assured, it will get worse. I hope it is the prop. At least it's cheap to do UJs. A new prop is only going to set you back £75. Everything else is costly!
Good Luck.

it will be the input gear splines

You mean the output shaft ?
Input shaft is the clutch end of gearbox.

Paul Humphries.
(I've got three gearboxes all with same wear on output shaft)

no i meant what i said, INPUT GEAR SPLINES as in pic below, these usually wear first, so changing it cures the problem, if left it wears the splines as well as the cloncking is the splines hitting together, the output shaft in the pic above isnt worn

Gemini Ian has a better understanding and experience than I do. So a trip down the East Lancs won't help you much. Sorry.

Cheers, Neil.:shakehead.
