Has anybody got a crank starter? I think they're called crank start handles. The thing you stick in through the hole in the bumper and to the engine, and then start cranking to start the engine up.

Just curious if anyone has a spare they'd like to sell me for like a fiver?

Yes i have got one, no i don't have a spare and unless someone is willing to sell you one for a fiver you might end up paying around 10-15 quid for one as that seems to be the going rate:)

I've got one but whenever I've tried it I couldn't make it turn the engine. Have I got a special sooper dooper high compression superpowered engine, or am I a wimp? :D

Actually no, don't answer that! I've never had to use it anyway. At the risk of asking the bleedin' obvious, why do you want one Steel?

The only time i have ever used mine is to set the points gap and to reset the tappets when the head was replaced. Have never needed to use it to start Polly with, even after 4 months of no use the battery still has enough life in ot to kick her over and fire her up:).

that ones more interesting without the handle (ours wont take one)

our method is put it in gear and rock the vehicle backwards and forwards until we get cam in the dizzy on a raised bit.

I remember my Dad starting his moggy on a cold morning with a 'andle and it kicked back and he got a hell of a sore hand. I also pushed a piano over his foot once (well I was helping him - he should have jumped), who need a son like me :o

cheers, Tim

Reminds me of the PG Tips chimps advert, went something like:

'Do you know the piano's on my foot?'
'No, but you hum it and I'll just play along.'

:D

For when the battery won't start her, and there arn't any vehicles about to jump start!

Just something worth having, cheap, and just in case. Because, Otu sits downhill, with a caravan behind her, so we couldn't bump start her. And if there are no "jumping" available, there's only the crank left.

For such emergency you can always jump start off the aux battery in the caravan. As long as you don't "abuse" it (ie the car started straight away and it isn't churning over for ages) the aux battery will take being used as a starter occasionally, from my expeirence, without ill effects.
