T'wud appear that there are some of your actual propper BOAT's inside the city limits of my fair city of Sheffield, :D
T' first one I have looked at, runs from SK 2955 8709 to SK 3074 8707 (Wayfinder UID SK2987-5a (http://www.way-finder.co.uk/cgi-bin/login.pl) ) just of the A57, I think its called Coppice Ln but will av tu check.

Anywho the lane is getting fairly over grown but i drove the first 2/3 in the Disco, and then decided to av a wonder ont foot as it was getting verry tight,
tis a good job I did as about 30 yds further up I came upon a set of stone gate posts with aprox an 80" gap and uneven floor that makes it even tighter int Disco, after the posts the lane gets very rutted and tight with some diff busting rocks + a drop off on the blind side that would quite easilly accomadate 3 or 4 rolls of a 4x4.

There where some MT tyre tracks from a smaller previous 4x4, but I decided not to be to silly on my own and did a 10 point turn in a gate way and drove back to the bottom.

not exactly what i was expecting as i read the User Evidence on Wayfinder..

some crappy picks from the phone cam.

looks quite tame now I look at these picks, will av to go get some of the gate and rocks next time am passing

Off to find more Sheffield Lanes. :D

Not as tight, but with some wonderful views, how about this one around Allman Well Hill ( http://uk.multimap.com/map/browse.cgi?client=public&X=428500.999999545&Y=396500.934254579&width=700&height=400&gride=428299.999999545&gridn=396399.934254579&srec=0&coordsys=gb&db=grid&addr1=&addr2=&addr3=&pc=&advanced=&local=&localinfosel=&kw=&inmap=&table=&ovtype=&zm=1&scale=25000)?
it's called Common Lane/Bank Lane.
I went over here a few weeks ago when photographing the Churchill at Chapeltown, it's probably better started from the Deepcar end (especially if wet)

Or the Houndkirk Moor (I'll assume it's still legally passable?) passing Lady Cannings Plantation & crossing the moor (http://uk.multimap.com/map/browse.cgi?client=public&X=429000.99999946&Y=383500.929138212&width=700&height=400&gride=428999.99999946&gridn=383499.929138212&srec=0&coordsys=gb&db=grid&addr1=&addr2=&addr3=&pc=&advanced=&local=&localinfosel=&kw=&inmap=&table=&ovtype=&zm=1&scale=25000)

manthing - the track you mention - does it head off up to the left as you travel out to Manchester on the A57, shortly before you get to Rivelin post office?

www.multimap.com/map/browse.cgi?lat=53.3799&lon=-1.5444&scale=25000&icon=x

If so, the tracks you saw of the previous 4x4 could've been mine - I drove it on Saturday evening.

The gate posts are about 4 or 5 inches away from the wheelarches on either side, and with the ground being quite uneven it's a bit tight. I wouldnt fancy getting a disco through there

At the top the track resembles little more than a footpath, and your wheels are pretty close to hanging over the edge as you make your way up. Fully passable though, except the residents do park their cars across the entrance to the lane at the top - obviously unaware that it's a vehicular right of way :)

Houndkirk is still fully legal, I drive it regularly. Nice long track for a bit of steady laning. Its a good lane to hit if your heading out to drive Stanage.

the lane at Deepcar will be added to the "to drive" list and I am allready aware of Houndkirk and Jumble ( isnt that the one with a very narrow gate at the end? its up by the plantation some where).

Jack it was friday, what do you drive?

I'm in a 90 with mud terrains!

There is another lane close by the two up at Houndkirk Moor:

www.multimap.com/map/browse.cgi?lat=53.3579&lon=-1.5579&scale=25000&icon=x

Very narrow - between drystone walls most of the way - with no turning places. The first time I drove it I got almost to the bottom before finding a fallen tree blocking my path. It was fun reversing out of there...

I'll have to have a look at that one next time I'n down there 'Jack'.

The Deepcar one is nothing untoward, but it has several sets of gates & passes through a farm-yard (there was a Collie running about when I did it)
It's a wonderful view over Broomhead, but the final drop might be a bit of a long reverse if you met a tractor climbing it.

I must admit I haven't been over 'Houndkirk' since I first bought my 90CSW-V8, must go again.

If you come a bit further west, there's some nice ones around the Holm-Moss/Holmfirth/Jackson Bridge area

tis not Coppice Ln, tis Coppice Rd.

Jack,
I bet the disco can give the 90 a good few inches in width.

I had seen Porter Clough and the others, cheers.

hmm the boy scouts where right then, "be prepared"
chain saw, shovel, axe,?????

BTM,
will have a look at it next time I'm up there.

According to my marked (but possibly out-of-date) OS sheet 110, there's quite a few to the west .
I can't state what the surface is, as I haven't used any.
Examples;
Y-shaped lane around Rivelin dams (http://uk.multimap.com/map/browse.cgi?client=public&X=427000.999999315&Y=386000.930116379&width=700&height=400&gride=426999.999999315&gridn=385999.930116379&srec=0&coordsys=gb&db=grid&addr1=&addr2=&addr3=&pc=&advanced=&local=&localinfosel=&kw=&inmap=&table=&ovtype=&zm=1&scale=25000)

Clough Lane (http://uk.multimap.com/map/browse.cgi?client=public&X=429500.999999438&Y=384500.929607056&width=700&height=400&gride=429399.999999438&gridn=384699.929607056&srec=0&coordsys=gb&db=grid&addr1=&addr2=&addr3=&pc=&advanced=&local=&localinfosel=&kw=&inmap=&table=&ovtype=&zm=1&scale=25000)

Manthing,
Is the disco narrower than the 90? Really? I would've thought the rounded sides make it a little wider. Wouldnt have said there was much in it, but then there wasnt much spare space through those gate posts! :D

There was a burnt out hatchback down Porter Clough last time I went down, but it was easy to squeeze past. I think it must be regularly used by a local farmer as any blockages don't last long. The surface is quite loose, rocky gravel. Non-damaging.

I'd also bet the local farmer uses a Landrover to deliver food to the cattle in the field alongside - twice i've been down that lane when all the cows have galloped down the field to come and greet me

Bush Tucker Man,
The lanes at Rivelin Dams - Wyming Brook - used to be full rights of way but I think they've been downgraded. As a kid I used to ride out there on the bike and there were always stolen cars that had been rolled off the edges of the lane (there are some really big drops alongside the track) and left upside down in the valley. The authorities must have grown tired of clearing them out, as it's been gated off for years at both ends.
It's just a bridleway now I think.

I still ride out that way en-route to Stanage & Hope Valley, and it would be a great lane to drive. Smooth enough to get a Mondeo up there, so non-damaging. Not good if you fancy some Camel Trophy action, but a nice alternative to the road!
