Hi guys,

I am thinking of changing the timing belt of my disco. My Disco covered 100,000m but i think the timing belt was changed before. I am calculating that this belt has covered 50,000 miles. I was thinking of doing the job myself duing my summer holidays. So i looked at previous threads on this forum and found a very comprehensive guide. (www.difflock.com (http://www.difflock.com))

My consern is the tools required! on the website i reqomends a special tool to remove the Viscous Fan and Cowl and another set of speical lock pins. Do i really need these tools?

Can I would with out them?

I don't know about the locking pins etc because I never did it on mine. However the viscous fan thing is a special spanner. It definitely makes life tons easier but it's not impossible to do without it. Basically almost all normal 32mm spanners will be too thick to fit. So you have 3 options.

1. Grind a 32mm spanner till it fits (i did this for a while....)
2. Tell me when you'll be doing it and I'll let you use my spanner (ordered from difflock site)
3. Order it yourself :D

I didn't buy the timing pins etc yet because I had my timing belt changed when I bought my landy a year ago. Whenever I'm due for another belt change I'll consider them.

Den,

its wort investing in the viscous thing cause its only 6GBP but the others cost 85GBP so quite expensive !

Yep true.

But if you're getting that spanner make sure to order a truckload of goodies from there too! Otherwise it won't be worth the shipping costs! I piled up a 100GBP order full of useful tools like the 52mm hub nut spanner, the propshaft nut removal tool (a TRUE GODSEND), the viscous hub spanner etc etc. The diffock guys are extremely nice and helpful. They package the stuff really well (no way anything will break in that amount of foam and padding) and they even refunded me 30GBP because of some shipping costs they managed to avoid somehow!

Anyway. If I were you I'd ask around on the main forums if the timing pins are indispensable or not. If you can do without them then you're welcome to use my viscous hub spanner to get the viscous hub off. I could even be around when you're changing the belt. I have to learn how to do it for when it's time for mine again!! :D

Hey Ludvic,

immm 50,000 miles, I would replace it in no time so I would know exactly, and start a fresh. I hear them sayin that after 60,000 miles you would be living on 'borrowed time'

cheers

Actually you use it much more than you think. You need it to remove the water pump, change power steering pump, change timing belt, remove radiator or intercooler, etc etc etc.. I already used it 3 times on my landy.
