View Full Version : Pay and play - Rochdale
alankemp
1st Jun 2005, 10:41
I am organising a pay and play day for Sunday 26th June. The site is at Whitworth near Rochdale, Cowm Leisure, web site to be posted shortly. The site is 150 acres of all sorts of terrain and on the second and last weekends it is open to 4X4's only with no bikes so we get the whole site.
There is a non damaging circuit of 4.5 miles at green rating with reds going off at various intervals. Or you can just play wherever. There is a big pond which is fairly clean, ie no floating bits of mud and grass to block your rad, (see avatar, you dont have to go that deep). Mud, rocks, big steep slopes, sections etc. Owners are very freindly and will pull you out (if no one else can, as was my case). Butty van, toilets , jetwash etc.
Cost is 25 squid for the day and is well worth it, (used to be 10). They have done a lot of work on making the routes and now have a heafty insurance bill. They also have to do an environmental impact assesment to placate neighbours who are making life awkward for them.
Anyone interested?
i just had a look on the map and its 2 far away for me
im afraid :(

Possibly but will have to check dates nearer the time :)
Possibly - only about half an hour from me. How non-damaging are the non-damaging routes?

The green route can easily be done on road tyres and there are no big sticky up rock to get yoy below, nor are there any tight sections which may get your sides. You can miss out any bits you dont like as there are plenty of escape routes.
Web site is still under construction but there is a little bit of info there.

I think you'll find the price is now £30 which is a complete rip off!
£10 to £30 I don't think so.......but you know what they say "fools and their money".

I think most pay and play sites start at £25 (waits to be corrected), they have quoted £25 to me on the phone and at that price I personally think it is good value considering you can play all day, and they have at least some facilities.
If you are going just to drive around 4.5 miles of graded route, yes that is expensive but there is a lot more to do, albeit a little riskier depending on driving abilities.
I have spent a whole day there in my disco without damaging it, before the route was made. (I did however drown it by going too deep in the lake and had to be brought home by the AA).

Perhaps you'd better ring them again then....it's £30!

Just did, spoke to Darren and it is £25.00. I t will go up to £30.00 in "a few months time due to cost of environmental costs".
Have you been to other PP sites, if so how do they compare, terrain, facilities and cost?

I think the extra £5.00 is for the compulsory jet wash before you leave, so in a few months it will be £35!
Why not do a few green lanes instead, save a few quid , much less damaging or boring.
The course they have set out in Cowm is a joke, but I'll let you make your own mind up.

I go green laning all the time. It can work out quite expensive depending on where you go, ie fuel costs. Laning is ok but very tame. I am into rock crawling and driving sections, marking out sections to give a challenge and a little competition. I have done 1 trial and enjoyed that but need to practice, where can you go to practice, legally?
I assume you have been there recently and been charged £30.00 and didnt enjoy your day. I have been to a few pay and play sites and think, on the whole they are good value for money. They also take pressure off lanes.

ive been to cowmquite a bit. i dont think 30 quid is to bad to be honest ive nbeen to the one near wigan that was either 15 or 25 forgot wich and you could almost fot that into the big pond at cowm. it just seems a lot to go up by but a tenner was an absolute bargain. plus if theres no bikes on then itll be much better

Weyhey Lewis, what did you do to become a site donor?
Due to the negative replies from dented, I thought I should check out the site again so went up Sunday am to do just that. The site has changed since the last time I went. It is now a quarry with a "marked" course rated at green (easy, non damaging). I was taken around the course they set up for last week and it was over three miles long. Anybody who want a little offroading that is slightly more challenging than laning then this would be suitable. It is advisable to walk some of the sections before driving them so you know what is coming.
As you go round there are many red sections going off the green which look very testing and some look near impossible but challenging. All sections are avoidable, ie there is an alternative way round if you dont like the look of them.
Owners will tow you out if you get stuck on route but not if you are playing off route. No problem with others helping you out though, playing off route is not encouraged. The owners would like to see vehicles sticking to the marked routes and certainly no one should go in the opposite direction on any section. If you find a section you like, there is no problem with repeating it provided you are going in the right direction. (All to avoid two vehicles meeting on a blind hill).
The course is changed every week and new sections are being made all the time. On some sections, wide gates allow you to choose, for instance, the big rock climb or the muddy or rutted climb.
I was impressed with the sections, although a little disappointed at first that you cannot simply go where you like. The up side of that is that you are less likely to collide with any other vehicles, (if you have been on the 4x4 fundays, you will know what I mean, they are great fun but you dread someone coming up the otherside of what you are going up).
I was shown some quite hard red sections that have never been driven before and cant wait to have a go.
The cost IS £25.00 not £30.00, they say they have never charged anyone £30.00. The cost will go up in the future. There is a toilet on site and a decent hot snacks van, jet wash is available for a charge but not compulsory.
I hope we can get a few of us there for a good day out. :p

Dates are 26th June, 10 July, 31st July, all other dates are for bikes only.
I went yesterday and had the best offroad day since starting at Easter this year. The quarry has been set out as a non damaging green route which is exactly as descibed. Peeps who did it say they enjoyed the day and didnt damage thrir vehicles at all.
I did the red route and it was awesome, strangely enough, also non damaging, with the exception of the odd scrape on the chassis. If you have a low tow bar, you will get stuck occasionally but I coped ok. Met a guy who has also just started off roading and we helped each other out as and when needed. I was in a defender 90, bog standard apart from bfg at tyres, no protection underneath, no rock sliders. I didnt miss any of the sections except for a couple of water filled bomb holes which were impassible without a winch.
No damage and had a fantastic time. Some ofthe drops are not for the fient hearted, lots of technical rock crawling, some of which we "added" to the route which is fine as long as you are not silly about it and keep in the right direction of travel. No worries about some one coming at you on a blind summit. All in all a fantastic day out.

Thanks for posting the maps Lewis, I have not been on for a few days, mega busy with work at last. Sounds like there could be a good turnout.
The lane you turn into for the quarry is called Tong Lane and is off the A671 Rochdale to Bacup road. If you are coming from Rochdale/M62, and you pass the Whitworth sign, it is on the left, opposite a Co-Op shop which is set back on the right hand side of the road. Turn into Tong lLane and go over the cross roads, the quarry is at the end of the lane, top of the hill, on right.

I will be starting the course as soon as I can to get as much in as possible. If we get a few cars together, we may get bottle necks cos its wise to walk the sections first time around. The course can take two or three hours to complete just one circuit so I guess we could all meet up at lunch time at the butty van, failing that, any one not there at 10 could ask the marshalls the best way to catch up with the group, this means you will miss the first few sections but you will get them on the second and third circuits.
I will be doing the red route, this will have some steep drops so any vehicles with a low bumper or rear end may damage the bits that catch. If you are on the green route, there should be no problem going round en mass, although you should still walk some of the sections so you know whats coming.

Ground anchor not reqired, unless you do the black route which may no be ready and you need rtoll cage, 3 vehicles etc etc.

I went 2 weeks ago, standard 90, well worn BFG AT's and coped admirably, mind you stayed away from the really muddy bits.
If I can get the tyres on the rims today, I hope to have the simex 36" tyres on my motor!!!!!!! Gave it a 2" lift yesterday and it goes over steep slopes a lot easier.

Great fun day out. Great team-work on the technical sections. You can't turn your back for a second.......
Dropped the front off-side wheel off the side of a humongous rock and the Rebel steering guard took the full weight of the fall. No damage to the steering gear at all but the end plate buckled and prevented the steering box going right. With the options being; remove the mangled remains or plot a journey home with only left turns, I removed it!
It just wouldn't be the same if I didn't break something.

That makes a total of three cars if you count the lads from L'Pool, which damaged the steering or guard. Funny really 'cos I didnt damage anything, oh but I have lost all of those thin spikey things off my tyres.

Left you on Friday at Billing and went to a place called Padley Woods with my offroad club. The winch was used a lot to get out of impossible places. We used a ground anchor on one very steep and long climb. It was used to pull 2 90's up (not at the same time) and it didnt move. Superb bit of kit. I was there on Sunday, managed to roll my 90 on to its roof. Need a couple of wings and a bit of a paint job. Will be back on the 7th.

Sorry, 14th not 7th.
Rolled it going over a sharp lipped pile and my back wheel went over a rock that tipped it over on to its side then roof then other side then back onto the roof. Lots of people took pics but I have none.
Saw you there Alan i was with the lad in the disco that you just missed backing up . Hope to chat next time i was in the grey 90 by the way nice motor yours is .

Glad you stopped me reversing. I was impressed by that ambulance coming down that loose hill, and the nutter going up in the mercedes I thing. He said it has lockers and that is why he went for it. I was sure he was going to roll it.
