Anyone know anything about this route that goes between Rhewl and Llantisilio?

A friend travelled it a week or so ago and says that at about SH 163468 a big boulder has been dropped in the middle of the road, and ther is no getting round it.

This is a UCR that runs from 155472 to 183450 and is named after the Pub that used to be at the latter point. Is the boulder at a gateway where there's a 90deg turn into a field? If so, I'm not really surprised! The farmer who owns that field has run a one man campaign for a long time in an attempt to stop vehicles travelling that road. His complaint is not with 'proper' vehicles, but with people who take low clearance vehicles up there, on the wrong tyres that slip and slide and churn everything up, then insist on driving on his field because they can't drive on the correct route.
It's a nice drive, but I must say I've noticed the effect that groups have had on the surface, and, to some extent, I can sympathise with the farmer. I've been trying for a while to get Denbighshire to carry out some repairs, with no result as yet!
Could you find out exactly where this boulder is so that I can pass it on to the Council to get it removed? Or could someone phone Denbs Highways about it?

The grid ref of the boulder (as well as my mate could reckon when looking at the map back home) is SH 163468.

I'll ring the Highways folks if you like - do you have a contact number for them - is it 01824 706800?

Yep - that's the number on their web page. I'll ring them tomorrow and let you know what transpires.

Cheers, Gurkha. If they're not interested, the RoW Dept is fully aware of this route due to mistaken info they gave the farmer last year and then corrected when I pointed it out to them. Caused a great deal of consternation (and hilarity for me because I knew exactly what he was doing!) at the time. Their number is 01824 706871. However, you live in the County, and that's a plus! I'm in Flintshire.

Should the grid ref not be SJ 163468 as SH 163468 is in the Irish sea.

Lewis,
This side of the frontier we don't let a little water bother us! After all, the Irish are the Welsh who could swim! :)

Been up there today. Boulders (4) are still in place hard against the gate. I've taken photos and tomorrow, when they've been developed, I'm sending letters to Dengighshire County Council and North Wales Police (with a copy of the Council letter). With a bit of luck another letter added to the communications they've already received may result in something being done!

Hoodoo - sorry for the lack of update - I forgot about this thread! :goofylook

I checked with the Highways Department again today and they said that a JCB had been up there within the last 10 days and that the boulders have been removed.

Anyone been there recently?

Not yet, but I will. I was waiting for confirmation from the Police about the removal, but they've not got back to me.

Mark,
Glad you enjoyed the day. Once you've got the other map, we'll get some more lanes under our wheels. Must admit, your Disco did rather well! ;)
Had a letter from the Council today in which they say the Highway Engineers have been instructed to carry out repairs. Good news!

next question....

despite driving the lane with hoodo, I did not have the map to mark it on.... WHSmith out of stock !

can anyone give me directions to the start near the A5104 from Chester to Corwen, I remember a left near a sign.... then thats all I remember !

I want to go back this weekend with a mate and take my nan and her friend to see the country, I like to include this again...

if anyone can find it on multimap ????? I'd be well gratefull

Mark, Straight on towards Corwen at the roundabout where we met, you'll come to a downhill, 'S' bend with a junction to the left at the bottom signed 'Glyndyfrdwy 4 miles', turn there. After one mile (check it) you'll come to a house on the right by a junction - the road starts on the left. This is the second house on the right, so don't turn at the gate at the first! (one mile, remember!)
