Hi all,

This is my first post here as I'm new to this forum. I know a couple of you mates, namely Dennis, Mark, Edward and a couple of others 4x4 owners. I'm also new to the 4x4 World (I bought a LR 2 days ago :) )

Some info about my LR...

Series III 109 Double Cab County, original 2.3D Rover engine, tropical roof, white wheelers. My first upgrade will be a set of new all terrain tyres, any advice would be appreciated. My budget lies somewhere around Lm45 each.

That's all for now. Cerio, Clifton.

Can anyone guide me as to what tyre make I can get for around Lm45 each and from where? I don't like remoulds so I'll be opting for new tyres.

I'll upload some pics soon ;)

Hey cliff... finally you got that land rover... I remember you wanting one from university times hehe.

As for tyres... shop around. There is that shop with a KUMHO TYRES sign near Go Mobile in Marsa ... sort of Opposite PM Hobby. Last time I asked he had Kumho All-Terrains for around Lm45 each and they're quite good even though I found a very lucky and rare deal just next door :D. Mine are Mud Terrains though so a bit rough on the road.

Cliff... we have to meet up again... I have to see this landy :D

i'd guess mr tdi300 is ludwig (or ludvig? sorry dunno how to spell it), or am wrong as always? lol

i think i convinced him for an A/T thread since he needs towing on tarmac but plans to go through some lanes (think i gave him a good advice)

as dborg and buzz say... LR's dont leak! they just mark their territory :p and they dont break down, they just having a rest ;)

Welcome TDI300,
I personally put down the performance of a vehicle to the handling and servicing of it, if you look after it and take care of what it needs then it will give you back lots in return. :D

Cliff proset on buying a Series - every old Series bought is one more that is going to get some tlc and new goodies :D

ive had my SIII 109 for 6 months now and am probably the most recent dude on this forum that has practically transformed a neglected truck into a very decent looking example.

ive changed and bought many new things and have also had practically everything imaginable serviced apart from the gearbox.

if you need any info just ask.

now re tyres :

1. this all boils down to individual opinion / use / & budget.

2. decide AND STICK to your decision re size. i wanted 235/85R16 and no matter that i found 285/85R16 cheaper i did not buy them. the reason here is i wanted same circumference as a 109 SIII left the factory (750x16 crossplies) but radials. the 'narrow' footprint i wanted specifically to put less strain on the steering box and hence lighter steering. remember tyre width WILL affect your steering - if yours has p/s fitted than it should be no prob.

i set myself a budget of Lm150 for new AT tyres and would not budge, though like you i didnt want remoulds so those were definately off my list. i also found 'good' makes like Cooper & Kumho that were 'seconds' .... beware of these, the excuse is always they they are seconds because the brandnames on the sidewalls had a defect but the tyres are the only link we have to the ground and i wouldnt risk my family on 2nd grade tyres.

i have been to at least 20 tyre outlets (no joke this i probably spent another good amount on fuel but that how it goes) and deduced that most household brandnames are out of my reach.

in the end i bought Enduro AT 235/85R16 from Blitz in Qormi for Lm140.

i am VERY happy with them, road performance is very good in the wet. moderate offroad i never had any probs.

but then again if money grew out of my ass i would have bought BFG's or Daytonas and fitted p/s ....... but then again i probably would have bought a new Defender :D

Welcome to the forum!! Post some pics of your spirit burner :)

A series vehicle is simple to work on. You'll soon be learning loads of new things about those great vehicles. Before I got my LR about a year I go I did not immagine myself dismantling the engine...... Next project is the gear box and transfer case. Good thing about them is that when compared to other vehicles, parts are not so expensive....

One important thing to keep in mind is that you will be only warned once... For example if you manage to see a crack in some hose pipe replace it immediately... This is from experience :) (xi tghid Nighthawk??)

The only drawback I have found so far about owning a series is its ride... My landy is supposed to have parabolic springs but I call them diabolic springs instead...Our maltese roads do not help either. Engine sound may be noisy as well. My previous engine (the sherpa lump is still available to some fisherman who wants it as a mazra) was incredibly load but the one I got now is much better.

Regards
Joseph

What do you think about the following tyre makes, in terms of offroad/onroad capabilities and build quality?

Avon
General Grabber
Cooper

Anyone has had a set on his LR?

Thanks

theBaptist

u're welcome ... :fiddle:

as for the tyres u're only mentioning brands ... be more specific and decide wether you want MT / AT or road use only which i doubt.

some tyres like General do some great offroad tyres but all terrain they become run of the mill.

Cooper make some great car tyres (i run Coopers 195/60R14) but offroad for landies its a different ball game.

as for Avon as far as i know they dont exist anymore because they have been bought out by Cooper and are now known as Cooper-Avon. if you still find them as "Avon" then you will still be buying a Cooper tyre.

I had a set of Cooper All Terrains on my landy. They were great on the road. But I personally feel they weren't up to the punishment of more severe offroad conditions. Mainly rocks. They punctured too easily especially in the sidewall.

Out of those makes you mentioned, General Grabber are the best
