Sven.... with the hired car... im not sure if you`re liable for parking fines and speed tickets... but here`s a couple of tips.. and the rest can post more surely.
Look out for the `Men in Green`... our traffic wardens. They love to fine everyone for everything. Watch out for `fishy` looking parking places, if there isnt a white box to park into.. watch out for a LM10 fine. If you are bringing a dog over... carry a doggy bag. Dont use a mobile phone whilst driving.. thats another Lm10. Watch for Stop signs on every corner and be ready to be patient when looking for parking.
We have a couple of speed cameras along the main roads, mainly Regional road Tunnels and bridges where the speed limit is 45Km/h for a Kilometer maybe.
Watch out for the speed cameras on the Xemxija hill.. which you`d need to pass daily to come from mellieha to anywhere basically. The speed limit is 40Km/h... ridiculous considering its a steep hill and you`re going to go on 2nd or 3rd Gear. These fines are at Lm30 at the moment. And forget avoiding them... cause they`ll have your face on photo.
Now... dont go cancelling your ticket :D but worth knowing what our driving situation is at the moment.

Whilst at mellieha... and you`ve got the car....you`re half way up to Gozo, which is nice to spend a day there. It costs Lm6.50 for a car and passenger and Lm2.50 per extra passenger... so make it a full day and its worth it. (www.gozochannel.com (http://www.gozochannel.com))

Citadel ... which is similar to Malta`s Mdina.

Ramla Bay is an awesome beach: http://www.maltavista.net/en/list/photo/1044.html
Dwejra Window if you`ve got the time and the inland see is just 2 minutes walk:

Grab a packed lunch and its a nice spot.
Marsalforn is great for cheap and good pizzas and tourist menus.

I must change my profession to a ..... Tourist guide.

Sven
My God Neville it sounds all doom and gloom!!
Its not as bad as all that Sven.
The wardens and speed cams are probably worse in the UK anyway.............. :p

Your hired Maruti Gypsy will be an Indian LWB Suzuki clone powered by a 1300cc 4-cyl petrol engine. It is not as solid as a Land Rover, but it will suffice to take you along country lanes to some beautiful spots of our islands ... notably Gozo of course ( hudha ma' saqajk Buzz :-P ) Enjoy your holiday!

Buzz, I must say they are a really wonderful couple.......had to wipe my tears with laughter yesterday at the meeting!!!!
It's great to see such comradeship between such far away distances through a vehicle that without any leaks would surely have something missing
Yep I agree Daniel I know there are many more of them around!
I too had a very good time last evening.
After all that is why we are all here on this forum, its that addictive thing with round black things at each corner and a badge that has "Land Rover" on it!!....

It might not leak oil to the outside ........ but it does leak water to the inside!! Ain't that a leak as well??!?!?:D
It might not leak oil to the outside ........ but it does leak water to the inside!! Ain't that a leak as well??!?!?:D
.........and what about the rattle at the back that you keep going on about?.... :p
It sounds like it's falling apart!!
As for the engine, what haven't we changed there????...... :D
What about all the tools you carry surely that's there in case of some imminent dissaster!!!!....... :behead:

6th May 2005, 10:39
..............not to mention all the specialised tools he bought:p .........disaster might be looming:D
...................and there's another thing.......some parts could never have leaked oil..................because they were full of water...................like the axles :D
How much has he spent for that, not to mention tyres and parts!!! :D
Not just that he is going to strip it this year and make a rebill!!!!...... :p
It'd have been cheaper buying a brand new one!!! :D
nighthawk
6th May 2005, 17:08
Yeah it might have been cheaper... but it sure wouldn't be so much fun!!!
And no, considering I spent a grand total of Lm345.85 (excluding tyres but including all oils and filters and a rip-off Lm100 service before I decided to start taking the plunge and repairing things myself together with my friends) in 1.5 years on maintenance (and you know my over zealous methods of "oh-well... let's-just-change-it-for-the-hell-of-it!-At-least-I'll-know-when-it-was-last-changed" type maintenance)... I consider it a bloody good vehicle!
As for filling with water... I've got my eye on the axles :P. I did check my oil (you know.. the filler plug is there to be removed not looked at :D). Oil will need changing soon but it's still viscous not mayonnaise like it was when I first changed it after buying it hehe.
The rebill is purely to get maximum life out of it. You'll see 15 years down the road I'll still be going strong while you'll be welding the holes! (assuming you won't be too old for landies!! :D) :P. Also ... ALL bushes need changing... all of them.. every single one. They're all shot to pieces.
As for the rattle from the back... as least I know what it is. Those freaking anti rattle springs!! Will be whipping off the wheel and trying to botch it somehow whenever I feel like.
And as for the last service. We surgically removed those useless bits of extra weight (the brake disc mud shields). That's not missing! :D
As for tools... yes.. tools make the distinction between 200 swear words to do a job and 50 swear words to do the same job. The more tools, the better I feel. Removing propshafts became a 5 minute job!
So now I answered all your comments :D
By the way our Friend "Svenuk" is the first non-Maltese to open a thread in the Maltese section.
Congratulations Dave!....... ;)
