View Full Version : Stanage Edge

After seeing the picture of Stanage Edge posted by Allan the other day I thought to myself "Hmmm. I want a go at that."

So yesterday, myself and Matt headed in that general direction with OS map OL1 in my top pocket. Wow! Sooooo glad I did go. There are some superb lanes up there. Some really long ones too with spectacular views in every direction. Highly recommended laning.
Sitting up there on the top of a rocky outcrop it makes you realise that, despite its problems, this really is a beautiful country we live in.
Some pictures of the day:

Try again. I think I've sorted the problem. Something to do with Photoshop and linking files to applications.

Looks impressive...... wouldn't mind having a play round there myself but not sure my un-modified discoII would cope with it......

and where is this exactly?

And where is this exactly?

Bottom edge of the Peak district between Heathesage and Sheffield. Don't have the map OL1 to hand so I can't give you a grid reference. The area is still worth a visit even if you don't want to go laning. The Blue John mines are worth a look and Castleton is best visited at Christmas.

Theres nothing we drove on on that a standard Disco couldn't handle. In fact the extra poke a Tdi has would come in handy for the long road trek needed to get there from Derby.

Incidentally, as we came flying out along the road leading from the quarry (see "playtime" and "one for the brochure") a chap went flying up the track into the quarry in a brand new Discovery 3  Well done that man. :D

Oh yeah, next time I go up, I may well be in a Discovery of my own. I'm selling the Micra and the 90 to get the one vehicle that will do everything. No sense in paying twice for insurance, tax and MOT anymore-too damned expensive.

Count me in, almost anytime. How would you get in touch or do we keep watching this thread?

A guy in a Disco 3 went to Langdale Quest on Sunday but hired one of their Suzuki's!? I was almost impressed by a guy in a new range rover who did some of the courses. (but none of the steeper bits though).

I’m off to do these lanes this sat 9th April. I did them last month with Buxton & District Land Rover Club. Some really good lanes out there. Any takers for this sat?

I went up there today but only to do Stanage as I dont know any other lanes around there.

For Disco drivers, mine (1999 TD5)went up quite easily with a few underside scrapes. I bent my front bumper which hangs down quite low and catches some of the steps. This is ok until you have to reverse.

On the way down I was stranded on the rear diff at one point due to holes either side of a rather large boulder. Next time I will fill the hole when on my way down.

There are some pics of today but I am not sure if they have uploaded.

Alan, did you get some funny looks from walkers on the trail? Sort of "Your never going to drive over that !" type looks.

We had a small crowd of people watching us negaotiate a path through those boulders. The view from the rocky outcrops at the top is something else though.

Is the offer open to all people? Even us lurkers?
I'm about 15 minutes drive from Stanage, so would be up for a rumble along there, and surrounding area... :)

[QUOTE=Cerberus]Alan, did you get some funny looks from walkers on the trail? Sort of "Your never going to drive over that !" type looks.QUOTE]

There were some walkers on the road but I moved very slowly so they were out of the way before I reached the rocky bits. (Didn't want any one to see me make a dick of myself if I got stuck, which I didn't, not going up anyway). They watched me from the top and I passed them on the lane later. The children and mum smiled as I went passed but daddy gave me a look of disappointment that I had made it, this quickly turned into a disapproving look so I just smiled and waved as I trundled past.

Incedentally, there are some sections carved out by 4x4's at the forest end of the lane and on the lane bankings. Surley this is not a coasha thing to do given all the flack we get, is it?

I know Stanage from climbing and have spent many hours up there. It is a beautiful place but gets very, very crowded on a warm summer weekend.

I will be at the start on sat at 9.00am. Do you guys take a flask etc or do you find a caff?

Jackthedog - What is a lurker, is that someone who looks but says nowt?

Apart from Goodrich MT tyres it is standard. I went up Stanage last week with hardly any trouble. On saturday I got stuck on my diffs and tow bar several times and would still be there now but for the superb assistance of Lewis who is top dog with waffles and knowhow. Pete had to snatch me off once when I was well and truly stuck. We had a great day out, a full days laning on different terrains. Thanks again Lewis...

I have just placed an order for everything to get the disco non standard. First on will be a 2" rise in suspension and a diff lock so I will try Stanage again when all work is completed. I just wish I had bought bigger diameter tyres.

Yep, that's a lurker. Well, I suppose a true lurker never registers and just views - so I suppose I'm just a bit of a Stranger, or Low-Poster... :)

Missed the Stanage meet in the end as other, far more boring family related stuff had to take priority. Damn my responsible nature. Next time there's a laning trip round my way I'll be sure to get my priorities straight and ignore the loved ones!

Looks like it was a good trip though!
