Hi Guys,
We need to get together again, I miss all your ugly faces and am getting withdrawal symptoms.

We need to talk a bit about stuff we need/ can do as a club.
Events to organise, and of course the main reason for meeting as usual beer!!

I suggest Friday 1st April and this is no joke! At around 2030.
Usual place but am open to suggestions.
Hope to see you there...... :D

Yep... we do need to meet up. Been very busy at work and i cannot chat during the day... SOO much to discuss.

I will be taking friday evening `off` my assignment cause i wouldnt be able to do any thing.. now knowing you guys will be having a laugh.:p

Mela.. Friday is fine, I will only have a few... to wake up fully charged to finish the LAST AND FINAL 2 assignments of this year. No more excuses then!

So.. on the agenda at the moment there is:

1. Couple of Pints
2. ALOT of chatter
3. Another event

Paul... how did Sat & Sunday go? I should have stayed on.... i regret not doing so. All i needed was a fishing rod.. and some more beers for the day :D

Im in the process of compiling a checklist for my camping gear. I cannot keep
it all in my head... and i need to start delegating jobs to my mates: Cooking shift, cleaning shift, beer fishing shift...

Was an awesome `by the fire` evening though.

Where shall we make it? Any corner shop which serves finger snacks and with decent prices around? Please not Zmerc... i cannot take any more oily chicken wings.

Jew guys... a couple of hobz biz-zejt ( Oily bread for the english speaking) and some pints... and we meet on some beach. No sand, so no excuses. Its Summer ux

Well we Usually meet at Timesquare but we are open to suggestions for a more central place. So anyone feel free,

(shhh, mainly because of Baptist cos he's always complaining its far away, but I guess it would seem so in his Landy.....)

So unless we have any suggestion its the usual.
Someone suggested somewhere near Attard.
Ideas will be accepted till Friday Afternoon, otherwise there'll be no time to pass the word around...... ;)

Orrajt, wanna meet at a decent place with very decent prices on beer....

Caccu Social Club in Qormi is the place to be!!
It's a good place + parking is ample, well, a couple of meters away + the guy who owns the place is really great + beer is cheap + for once it's near to MY house!!

To make it easy we can all meet at my garage and I show the way to those who do not know it.....

Let me know about it.............

..maniac... next drive or event .. ask them to come along too... We just need to prepare some radios to share amonst us... so we keep all informed.

Naqra organisation.. and all will have fun driving along.. not looking for each other.

Untill the end of May I wouldnt be able to make it a campout however... and i`ll be limited on the `nights out` too... naqra studying for my yearly exams.
And reducing the amount of beers down me should leave me some brain cells to work with. Useless studying... to kill them the next day :D

Nice place too.... they really treated us well and 50c a skol wasnt bad. Prosit to who chose that place.

Next event will be at the experience trials OK?!!?!?!?!?! I spent enough money and time preparing for this thing so I need to see my good ol' buddy faces around there.

At least all the money and time spent is all for useful equipment and extremely useful experience. At least at the end of this I can say "I drove headlong into THE Experience and came out in one piece" (hopefully!) :D

Anyway. Come along for the trials (I assume everyone knows when they are). And get me BEER!!!

just a suggestion Steve .... if next outing proves to be even better attended than the last one i suggest we form 2 groups split by at least 15 - 20 minutes .....

15 + landies in convoy mode raises more atention than 2 groups of 6 or 7 each.

Yes good suggestion John, we definatly will have to think about doing this, at least a 15-30 minute interval between groups.
Hopefully we'll have radio coms too......Some of us are interested in a CB we have talked about purchasing a few together maybe at a reduced price.... ;)

Good idea... splitting up can help us go a bit `unnoticed`. L-iktar cause when we take a road... we actually take control of the traffic flow.... all people at sideroads remain there for a good half a minute when we were 7 vehicles.

They`d go insane if 15 have to pass at a time.

We need to sort out the communications then. Mela... Please list what you`ve got from this list: FM Radio, PMR/Family 2-way Radio, CB radio and we`ll start planning.

Posted at the Same time Buzz...I`ve got one at the moment... but i might have to buy a decent antenna. Im not sure if i mount it on the front bumper or at the back coming up to the 90`s height from the bottom rear.

Great idea to group buy though... a bit of bargaining power helps. I`ll ask JCs dad for a tip or two though first.. he`s an avid radio amateur too.

Please also note that there is going to be another new comer with us TOPPER.....so he's welcome as well.;)

When i'll have some time I will make the track and we will agree on a date that will be surely on a sunday morning.

well my CB is still waiting in the UK as i still have to clear it past the wireless department in malta.

i got a midland 48 mutli + hope they dont tamper with the channels :(

as regards to arial (or however u spell that d*mn word!) am thinking of a 1.85m one, starting from near the crossmember on the back and skipping the roof that way i get half the thing clear of the aluminium and should have good reception all round hopefully :/

so for now i can say i got 2 PMR's

olo
5th Apr 2005, 10:16
well to be honest pricing is around Lm30 for a danita CB ( they very good) and Lm50 for 2 PMR's if am not mistaken....

good think about CB's :

1. very long range
2. take power out of vechile (unless u buy it as a handheld device)
3. can access emergency channels in case of distress
4. looks good ;)

bad things about CB's:

1. another item to steal in a land rover (like a car radio)
2. open to many listeners, theirfore u might get garbage traffic, i.e. users just occupying the airwaves to laugh
3. risking getting ariel ripped off by trees
4. need good earthing base at end of ariel plus ariel should be tuned well for the frequencies (george could explain better i guess as i'm still a begineer)
5. yearly licence fee to the goverment
6. not really safe to give out your location whilst off the road (in case there are other ears)

good things about PMR:

1. handheld and very small
2. run on batteries
3. very short range
4. has CTCSS (security coding to lock into a private conversation like we do, hence y cobra's listen to us only)
5. free to air, no need to pay licence.

bad thing about PMR's

1. if batts die, your radio is dead
2. easily caught out of range
3. not loud enough for inside a land rover

thats it as far as i know, it would be an excellent idea if we could have a CB and PMR, so we use PMR's when close and CB's just to regroup if out of range.

A very informative list Olo.
But as regards a few points, the CB can be removed and used specifically for events. Or hidden out of view. I was thinking about fitting it into the cubby box I am eventually going to make (I hope it won't be as heavy as George claims my rear shelf is.... :p )
As for the antenna (note spelling Olo), well there are very flexible types that can be fitted and if you have noticed how George fitted his, it can be fitted quite well protected. An idea you could try is mounted to the front bumper and if need be lower it and clip it to the roof when going thru any vegetation but I think thats not much of a problem.
As for earthing etc, leave that to George or myself. Remember thats what I have been fitting into vehicles for 4-5 yesrs now.

It would be an idea to meet and talk about this properly actualy and purchasing as a group.

I like the idea of splitting but any more than 10 vehicles on the same tracks might do irreparable damage to the very tracks that we pass through. I suggest that we keep to the famous rule of 10 vehicles on every event. Anyone who wants to join has to book/apply early or otherwise he will only be allowed to ride in one of the other vehicles. That way I see 4 main advantages:
1) We reduce the erosion or possible chances of damage to the environment
2) We are in greater control of the participating group
3) We keep interest going as the ones who miss an event will be eager to come on the next one and they might replace anyone who might feel he's done enough or who wants a break
4) Those who end up in the navigator seat will have the chance to get some experience as co-drivers/navigators as well

I strongly suggest that we abide to the 10 vehicle-per-event policy. After all, every experienced Land Rover / Off-Road organiser in the UK including Land Rover themselves use this rule!!

I'm sure you will all agree to this!!

In the meantime, Landymaniac, next week (week 15) I'm available to help you out with the next route. I hope you can wait till next week as I've got some mechanical issues on my landy to deal with this week and then there's the Experience '05 during the weekend.

Enough for now........:D

Using CBs we`d need to use codenames, nicknames, location nicknames

Yes I realised too late about it being Olo's post but I have edited it.

As for the 10 vehicle rule, well yes it is a good Idea but I don't think the applying for a space is a good idea but on the other hand if anyone does miss out due to being "full up" at worst the drive is hopefully going to end with a BBQ so anyone can meet up for the BBQ in the end too.

It is not a pleasant thing leaving keen people out of events like this.
As I see it as we are using tracks anyway we are not damaging anything.
Anyway what ever, I ain't missing out!!!...... :p

Buzz,
'Leaving out' people always works for the best of everyone! It keeps those interested on the look out for the next event + creates enthusiasm + gives the opportunity to those who will miss it as drivers to be as passengers, + and will keep a healthy number of participants on every event! And besides all that, we only have to share the beer between those in 10 vehicles, which might easily mean more beer :D

The tracks we use can still be eroded more than is necessary for us to have fun whenever more than 10 vehicles pass through it. Some of these tracks have to be used by farmers, cyclists, and people who go for walks. Let's just have our fun and help keep the tracks open to all. The 10 vehicle limit has been applied in the UK on most official events. Let's not try a different rule only to find out that it was the wrong way especially when we can learn from the experience of others.

I don't intend to keep this topic going but I do hope we all agree to this little thing!!

In the meantime have some biofun :p

This is my thread so if I want to keep it going I will........ :p

It's ok about the 10 vehicle "rule" or whatever you want to call it.
I don't like leaving people out, as long as those who want to come can fit somewhere.

Another option would be to make two separate routes for two groups but we can end up in the same spot?

theBaptist
6th Apr 2005, 17:51
me personally dont like 10 car rule :(

ok i might be the 1st to book my place but it aint fun at all being left out ...

as for damaging the environment im all for protecting it but as long as we dont drive over important 'heritage' areas and sensitive sites like limestone where tyre marks last a loooong time i doubt we'll have such a bad impact.

i still think that splitting the group is good and like buzzy seyz too seperate routes might be the other option. :dunno1

dborg01
7th Apr 2005, 11:03
Baptist and Buzz, no one will be left out! They can ride with the rest!! That way those who will not be able to drive will have the opportunity to operate the radio, help the driver to drive over the obstacles, or even drink the beer for him!! :D
As to environmental damage, excessive ruts might also cause indirect damage and excessive erosion. This is one reason why in the UK they stick to 10 vehicles. On the other hand 2 groups on different routes is not an event but 2 events and that might create the usual problem .... 'il-klikek'!!
Then at the end of the day it's down to who's organising the event to make the rules and let's face it, some discipline never killed anyone.
I'm always in to support any of the activities and don't want ot hinder any ideas!;)

When's the next one.........................:p

Dan we will be going over terrain driven over countless times. In the UK they probably drive thru lanes as in muddy lanes. We usually drive over well worn areas.

Like I said we either organise a second route and meet at the same desitination this way we can reuse both routes and switch them at a next event or otherwise split the group with at least a 10 minute interval.

To be honest we are not in the UK and we are not going over fresh un-driven on land.
We will be driving over well eroded areas.

Buzz,

It seems like we are going in parallel over this 'argument' and will never meet!! I think it's fair enough to get a Chinese parliament going, on our next meeting. Basically there are 3 choices: 1) Always open to more than 10 vehicles ; 2) Always with a 10 vehicle limit ; 3) Remain flexible and therefore will be up to the organiser's discretion to set or not set a limit and what to do with more than 10 vehicles.

We still have to meet anyway as we have to discuss a good stand in the 4X4 show which so far it is going to held in about mid May.

In the meantime.......keep on landying!!

well i like convoy style, but with a convoy style we need a "middle leader" as in someone in charge from the middle backwards as in most cases we always split up in half and ended up waitin for the rear lot, reason mainly is traffic.
