Hi, I drive a green 90. I have just bought it and would like to maybe do a bit of mild off-roading. I can't really afford to do anything serious as th ewife would kill me !!
welcome to the group oilyrag, we usually go for mild offroading, though when there is somethin that might involve damage whoever is leading the group always makes sure that there is an alternate route for those who opt out of the particular piece of terrain. also, speakin from experience if u listen to what dborg01 says you'll succeed. he's not god but he's got alot of experience :)
Welcome OilyRag,
Nice to see more Maltese joining the forum.
We are, as the other fellow Maltesers have said, a group of guys who love our machines, none of us have any hybrids or extreme offroad vehicles IE that we can afford to do anything extreme as we use our Land Rovers for everyday use as well. So cannot realy afford to have our vehicles off the road, damaged. So we do offroad and somtimes not so mild.
Our interest is in enjoying ourselves with least damage to the ambient our vehicles and to the public.

Hello Oilyrag!! Welcome to these forums, to Malta and to Land Rovers!!
It's great to get to know so many people especially through Land Rovers and these forums!!
Well, we do some 4X4 Experience driving. Nothing damaging at all. I hate that, be it damage to the vehicle or to the environment! I believe that we can experience our vehicle's cpabilities without even scratching it! On our events we do give the chance to tougher sections for those who are willing to broaden their experience with a challenge but that's always optional, like Olo said. Most of us are complete beginners anyway! So far we always had a good turnout, both as to the number of vehicles as well as to the type of vehicles - we had a couple of shiny, nearly new landies join in!!
In any case, I'm sending you a private message with my details. You're always welcome to contact me!!
Looking forward to meet you all in the next event!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Im just waiting for it to strike 5 oclock and go through into a couple of flooded streets... my chassis needs a free power wash ;)
Come on ED you`ll miss the fun! Get some cash and pump it in the tank.... not to sound like a cheap ****... but i split my costs with the navigator. Some Fuel and the boat travelling costs get split.. and they`re happy to do so. But not that it should break the bank... i`d better mind my own business.. im soon going to need cash myself :( the bill for this years exams came through.

Hi people,
seems like we're getting more and more popular here. Our non-damaging style of doing things seems to attract more and more people. Looks like next time we organise an event we'll be split into groups :)
were we featured in some newspaper or something?

Sorry but i could not resist...........
Oh dear, oh dear, non damaging way of doing things??!!?..............WTF!, drive properly and you wont damage anything or keep to the roads, le le!

hehehe so far my landy got more damage on our 'roads' than off the road.... It loves going off the road :)

i would also add "dont tackle terrain u dont feel confident with" if you feel insecure about a piece better not try it or u'll end up breakin the rule of what you just said, you panic and u end up not driving properly and there goes damage :)
cil111
18th Feb 2005, 17:42
hmm true in a way but if you never tackle it you never end up doing it... u need confidence in your vehicle and yourself and you gain that by pracitce and experience, which means that you need to try new obstacles...
c what i am getting at...
olo i think at the end of the day it boils down to how much are you ready to sacrifice your vehicle.. In many obstacles you will find out that what you thought was impassable will turn out to be very easy for the vehicle and yourself.. u just need to want to attempt it..
yo i am not referring to a 6 foot drop ta here because there some sort of damage is always going to happen..

Hmm I dont agree myself
I think the driver is the limit... At least from my personal experience it was always me who was the limiting factor not the car...
joe019
19th Feb 2005, 09:09
It depends what is your machine.... When we go ofrroading I really love the beasty growling sound of a TDI working through mud....
My 2.5 NA cannot compare to that. Now it is in a much better state that the last event in Gozo. During that event it was picking up air from the lift pump olive and you can immagine what a drastic loss of power that means....
I try all the paths that the others do.... i can rely on the beasty 300s to pull me off from where I get stuck :)
Hmm I dont agree myself

fair enough a Tdi has more power than a N/A but in offroad apart from hills the N/A is no way disadvantaged.. In mud you dont need power... just constant motion.. Now whether you are going at 5mph or at 20mph it is no different..
True a Tdi does help especially on the road and in uphill climbs but it il bqija nothing... i used to pass with a 2.3 tobzoq iz zejt u kien jehlu it 300's... just need to tackle it the right way...
Uphill it is a different story hehe... my old 2.3 used to run out of puff...
tinsiex the faster you go whillst offroading the more damage you will do..
there is a maxin which is always true... as slow as possible and as fast as necessary... well something like that anyway... i guess you understood the gist of it...
Dont get me wrong Joe the 300 is a beautiful engine.. i love it too bits (apart from its sometimes high consumption) and basically run 2 of them but honestly i cannot see the major offroad advantage that it gives you..
In mud one things is needed.. driver ability and tyres.. engine is secondary.. anzi the more powerful sometimes the easier it is to get stuck..
joe019
19th Feb 2005, 11:55
I think I agree, I recall events where my 2A passed easily where 300s got stuck...
And I used to believe that as well but since I got stuck in gozitan clay I got a kind of phobia for mud and started thinking that my engine lacks power for it.... It was quite a mess casue I had to be pulled out by two landys. That was when my engine had that air in the diesel system problem.
I need an event to get my confidence back.

Joseph

My landy never got stuck ... yet. The part joe019 got stuck my landy drove up before him without difflock engaged :D (i forgot to engage it and only realised when i parked).
I agree that engine power is not so crucial offroad apart from hillclimbs. Tdi's make good recovery vehicles though. Power and torque play the crucial role there!
As for growling Tdi's... guess you're referring to mine (classic case when it clawed it's way out of the mudhole in qormi where this http://www.landrovernet.com/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=11458 resulted in this http://www.landrovernet.com/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=10848 with a close up action pic here http://www.landrovernet.com/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=10853 :D) heheh. Yes it does growl more viciously compared to other 300's... just compared mine to paul's side by side. Dunno why mine sounds different... it sounds deeper... growlier... louder?. Boq. Maybe because of the open fuel pump? It's silky smooth though.
PS...
In mud one things is needed.. driver ability and tyres
Aren't those 2 things? :D Reminds me of one of my teachers in secondary school "one two three both of you out!" :D
joe019
19th Feb 2005, 16:32
Looks like you forgot that in that qormi event my landy passed from there without having to deal with mud holes :) hihihi the guy taking pictures did not even have time to take a couple of pics of my landy !!!

actually i think whoever remembers it is laughin his head off lol, dont blame them ... the passenger bit i knew i was gonna get covered in mud but i said f**** it, better him gettin out of there then gettin scared of gettin dirty and the 2nd bit i didn't do as daniel said, either coz i paniced or somethin and that got me stuck in an amazingly perfect engine cooler lol
thinkin back on it though it is really funny :p

C'mon let's just keep it going in the banter section ;)
When something like this happens and someone is not happy posting or hijacking a thread the solution is simple, there realy is no need for the moderators to step in cases like this.
Just post a new thread with the new subject and slap a link in the hijacked thread, simple....... :p
And hence give me an easier time on here........
