Sorry, but this isn't relevent to your question but have they no changed the ridgeway to a bridle way or something, because it used to be a by-way didn't it?
Used to live down there.

Cut and paste special from elswhere on t'internet...
The 137 km (85 miles) of The Ridgeway are made up of the following types of path:
Status Distance Percentage
Public footpath 36.3 km (22.7 miles) 26%
Public bridleway 16.9 km (10.6 miles) 12%
Public byway/RUPP 71.4 km (44.6 miles) 52%
Metalled road 12.5 km (7.8 miles) 9%
So 1% is imaginary or something?

Thanks si_guru, I never knew that. Maybe that 1% is privte land and they call it the ridgeway to join to pieces up?!! Will have to look into it!

The webpage I looked at was:
http://www.nationaltrails.gov.uk/ridgewayframeset.htm
Click the "Latest on Traffic Regulation Orders" to read the [i]bad[/i[ news though... it's pretty much shut down now.
I drove it a couple of years ago... I knew it's day were numbered.

Your local council should be able to help have a look at this link a phone call or email to ask what lanes are open. ;)
Hope it helps.

There are loads of lanes around Salisbury, and providing you are careful and behave there is the salisbury plains too :D
Mark, there's one or two decent enough lanes over Devizes way. Hopefully later in the year when both my back and the lightweight are sorted i'll be down that way (mother in laws) and i could show you a couple.
Get in touch with one of the local clubs/groups, there's several in your area, they should be able to give you more of an idea on the staus of the ridgeway as well.
Talking of mothers in law, she lives in Devizes, next time i'm down there any of you beer buffs want anything special picking up from from Wadworth's, lemme know and i'll get some prices for you.:D

Sounds good to me!
Been looking on the old OS maps, quite a few about, but dont really wanna risk driving them on me own. (still aint popped me offroad cherry)
Sailsbury plain seems to be pretty good to use, looking around appears its accessible pretty much all the time, with exception to the live firing bit of course.
Anyone else on here from round these parts?

Arrr! The Swindonians are spreading northward eh! Fair play!
Hiya,
Although I'm gurt new round 'ere, oi've done a bit on the Plain.
Try this link-gives a few other sources to try as well
http://www.army.mod.uk/ate/public/salisplain.htm
There's loads of by-ways on the Plain-I'm heading off down there soon myself as soon as I raise my RR up a bit. At certain times of the year they open up places like Imber which is a village used for training and you can drive on through.
If I can remember where I saw the rest of the info I've read, I'll post it on.
Regards,
Nick
