Hi
No serious off roading - we do not have any off road clubs here. A few like minded Landy owners do meet up, but everyone here has a common problem, if we break something - it's really hard to find the replacement parts. If we do manage to find them, they are very expensive!
I've been on a 8500 km trip from Mumbai (Bombay) to Arunachal Pradesh, (North East of India) in my 110. It was a lot of fun. You might have heard of a place called Darjeeling in the Himalayas - they have a lot of LRs running as local taxis there, most of them Series 1 & 2.
It's difficult to even come across an LR here in India! The only ones surviving are the series vehicles which came in the country as donation from other nations. Defenders are also very rare.
Cheers

Hi Ritul,
I did a 23 day exped in 2001 from New Delhi to Mumbai (plane, train and automobile). Most of it was done in a Tata truck. Most of our time was spent in Rajastan which is one of my favourite places ever visited.
I found Land Rovers very scarce even in Mumbai where I saw only 2, a Defender and the RR pictured with me below (bad photo).
The other photo was another favourite of mine!!

Hi AJ
You're lucky to see 2 LRs in a short time, living here I must have come across maybe 10-12 diff rovers till now in Mumbai! Except 2 friends and me, no other LR owner is interested in off-roading. We managed to find 2 used Warn winches in a scrap market in Pune for around 90 pounds each. Both are working but missing some parts and electricals. Now the task is to locate batteries with 650 CCA or some alternate arrangement like 2 battery system to run them on our LRs. Any advice on how to go about seleceting batteries and wiring them for a 10000 Lbs winch will be helpful!
Cheers

Is there not a landy club out your way?? If you got enough interest you could try setting one up!

I'm close,... Pakistan. If you are ever near by our border, give me a shout and we could meet up and (on your side of the border) have a drink:D . Perhaps we could set an example for our governments to follow.
I'm surprised that there are so few Land Rovers and Range Rovers in India, before production started (for the defenders) back home, the Range Rover & Disco were pretty common.

Hi Storm
Yeah we could meet up at the border and share a drink...sides do not matter, except if our security forces allow us to! Have you seen an ad for some local whisky which shows India-Pakistan border scene and the Pakistani general is desperate for a drink? Well he sneaks over to the Indian side for a drink and returns back!
The reason for few imported cars in India are due to the fact that the local government has always tried to encourage local manufacturers. Due to this, the import duties are very high for imported vehicles. In a way this has helped the local manufacturers and therefore we have a wide range of cars made in India.
Cheers

Hi Ritul, sorry for not stopping by and saying welcome earlier. :bigwave:
Not in India i'm afraid, cold London for me. Surprised to hear that Land Rovers are scarce seen out there. Suppose the Mahindra would have something to do with that though?.
As for Indo-Pakistan relations, i think that could go for more governments around the world as well. It seems a lot of the time the people who actually reach power, forget how they once thought as the man in the street. It's governments and politicians (and occasionally the church) that cause wars, not the citizens of the country.

nope i havn't seen it but i'd appreciate it if you could forward me a link,... I'm sure all of my drinking buddies back home would have a good laugh.

We have the same thing back home (at one time duties went to 600%), but now the government is starting to relax a bit because local manufacturers wern't holding up their side of the deal. (it only took them 50 years to figure that one out)

Hi Bhodisatva....nice Indian nick you've got! Mahindras are very popular alongwith Tempo Trax and now Tata Sumos plus many more newer generation UVs. Now we have a whole lot of vehicles and they are of reasonably good quality. On my trip through rural interiors to the NE of India, I came across hundreds of Mahindras used as local taxis carrying 20-30 passengers .....some people sat on roofs too! Maybe not the best off road machines, but full utility value!
Storm, the ad comes on TV, don't have a link! It used to come often during the cricket matches....now I think they have banned liquor ads on TV so they show ads for mineral water and sodas with brand names of liquor companies.

That's too bad, I would have loved to have seen it. I'll try to search the net for it. Do you remember which brand it was for?
