Hi guys.
Just thought I would share my green lanes with you in this new section. I have split it into 3 maps so you can see the detail a bit better, but it is in fact one route. Allow 6 hours for this route. It starts at SJ 17091 37057 and you finish up at SJ 17166 32617 so not far from where you started. If you wanted you could carry on to the Wayfarer run thus adding 2 to 3 hours onto your day? (its worth it) It starts near Glyn Ceiriog not far from Chirk just off the A5. If anyone is using Fugawi Digital Mapping Software I can send you the route via email so you can navigate it from there. The route is a nice gentle route and is not too damaging. I did it last week with a friend in a Toyota Surf and that managed ok. (Well bent a side step). I’ve also added some pictures so you get an idea of the route.

We started on the first lane at about 9:30 and we finished for around 16:30. we stopped a few times for photos etc and we also found a nice spot for lunch (SJ 09746 27872). We didn’t do the wayfarer run that time but if you wanted to its about another 2 to 3 hours extra (good one for the longer day light hours). I was thinking of arranging this green lane trip for people on the forum in the spring so watch this space.
There are not many problem areas on this run. You do need to be careful on the section where you can see the Toyota. We do that section one vehicle at a time whilst someone guides you down etc. I have also done this with a friend who has a Vitara LWB and that managed fine. it is none damaging if you drive carefully and plan your tracks. I have never done any damage on this track. (touch wood).
Oh and please obey the Green Lane code of conduct as this is a very nice route and I would like it to stay that way. See Green Lane Code of Conduct Here (http://www.freewebs.com/lewiswilliams1/greenlanecodeofconduct.htm)
Thanks

Not trying to be a spoilsport, but remember the Wayfarer is closed temporarily to vehicles - until Council have managed to complete repairs to the railway sleepers and drainage. Likely re-opening time is in the Spring.

Thanks for that John. I didn't know it had been closed. I haven’t driven it since December. All the other are open as I drove them only last week.

That looks very familiar, I went up there on New Years Eve with the DOC group, and have got some almost identical photos. :)

Nice pics,
I live near there, although not done them yet in the 101. However, met a guy in Halfrauds car park in Chester between Xmyth and Hogswatsit who runs a couple of off road platz in the same area. Goes by the name of Neil Collins. He offered to set up a day for Landy owners (never had a 101 there apparently) at about £20-30 a pop.
If anyone is interested let me know.
Also I want to run a few of the greenlanes before nanny state puts a stop to it. Are the routes you mention suitable for a 101 ambi (ie will one fit through the holes or do I have to make them bigger? :D ).
Cheers

Would it be totally irresponsible to drive the lanes solo?
Wouldn't mind a bit of a run out next weekend, but don't want to end up past me axles in ****e if I can help it. :p

There's a VERY VERY angry farmer in the field just after the water splash pic who drove his tractor head on towards one of the Discos in our group, and also missed running over a Jack Russell puppy by about a foot.................I wouldn't want to confront him alone

i travel the lanes around there and some more aswell, i quite often travel solo as sometimes its hard to organise mates to come along, its not too bad if the lane is known to you and you know what sort of terrain you will encounter. a winch or some method of self recovery is a must when 'exploring' new lanes., as is a tool kit and spares for any mishap. a complete change of warm clothing packed out of the weather is a good idea and food and drink to warm the insides :) there are a few lads on the forum(hoodoo, steve@offroading, and myself to name a few, that regularly travel the berwyn area of lanes so if anyone wanted to have a day out then im sure something could be arranged without too much trouble. vicky? are you on about the watersplash in landyv8 picture where you came into contact with farmer?

Yes, we took a sharp right (almost doubling back on ourselves) just after the water and met him in this deep rutted field

yes vicky, i know it now. if its the farmer im thinking about, he got verbally abused by a load of off roaders (10) a while ago who were tearing up one of the lanes there. think its addled his brain :banging:

I recognise it now, as well. The problem is the turn through the gate, which gets very churned up when it's wet, and the fact that people with standard vehicles can't handle the ruts so drive on the field. The farmer is actually quite friendly when you get talking to him, at least he is with me. But then, he does recognise that I'm mad!!
Must admit, that's a route I won't go on until there's been at least two weeks of dry weather, because I've seen how bad the gateway gets.

i know which off roading firm is using all them lanes for large trips , they still advertising that they taking groups out up there , sopposed to belong to some reconised off road driving institute and desighned landrovers off road course ?, got my self on his mailing list but never used him as Mr Hoodoo saved me and took pity and showed me and my the landy the right way to drive the right lanes

christ didnt think the wayfarer was that bad! :( just looked on the link to stupidmans site. no wonder the council closed it!! these so called organised off road trips are going to be our downfall. 10 or so off road vehicles are a bit hard to blend in and tend to get the anti's backs up :( :(

Series 3,
I'm going to widen the doors at home so I can get my head through! I didn't know I was some sort of a saint! ;) When's your motor going to be finished so we can get it out again?
Ant, I've sent you a PM.
Perhaps I should add that Dave (Superzuki) was one of those that supported my contact with the Council regarding closure of the Wayfarer, pending repair. They were going to do that anyway, but our support for their action has illustrated that we are as concerned as they are about the general condition of the road.

Hoodoo - please let me know about the closure of the Wayfarer. I've heard that it is only closed from the LLanarmon DC end, but you can drive from the Cynwyd end to the memorial and then turn round - is this right?
Are you saying that you contacted the council suggesting they close it? If so, well done. Not only does it make good sense viz a viz the state of the road, but it adds weight to the argument that most 4x4ers are sensible, responsible and care about the lanes.
(It's the big 'organised' parties and the cowboy off roaders who don't even stick to the lanes that are going to cock it up for us all. :bigun2: )

i have e mailed 2 of the organisations that were still using the wayfarer regarding its TRO and as of last night, one of them had returned my e mail and said they were not aware of the TRO but would adhere to it :D that just leaves the d~ckh~ads to get through to.

The actual section that is closed extends from the summit, by the memorial (Wrexham's County boundary) to the little concrete bridge on the Llanarmon side. So there is a short distance you can drive from Llanarmon before turning back, and the 'up and down' from Cynwyd to Llandrillo is still open (Denbighshire). I'm going up there this Sunday to see whether any work's been done, and give me some ammo to fire in my letters! Stocking up on A4 and envelopes now!

Well, went up to the summit of the Wayfarer today, and met three groups of Landys on the way. The first were also going to the top for a look-see and we walked down to the muddy bit to see whether anything had been done yet. It hasn't, so I'll be writing to the Council about that. We noticed that the embedded posts had again been pulled out, and, this time, thrown down the bank out the way. A motorcyclist told us that he had spoken to the drivers of some vehicles driving through the mudhole on what used to be a nice, grassy knoll at the top, and he'd been met with a load of abuse. We also pointed out to a pair of Landys that there was a TRO from the summit onwards, then had to explain what a TRO was, and the possible penalties for ignoring it. They turned round and went back. They had also driven past a 'Road Closed' sign (admittedly in the wrong place) to get to the summit, but, as they said they'd not been there before, you'd have thought.........? Motorcycles are still driving through, but it's difficult to do anything about them as they're mostly highly illegal, with no number plates, and probably no tax, test, insurance, and probably licences. The TRO is still being ignored, the signs are still being removed and the posts are still being uprooted and thrown away. Sort of tends to create a slight lack of enthusiasm??!!
The third group of Landys I met were some very pleasant people doing the up and down route who showed me a map on which they'd marked a route they'd been unable to find. A certain amount of hilarity ensued when I pointed out that they'd marked the County Boundary. Must confess, this is the second time I've seen this happen. Nice people, though!
I'm sure the Council are aware of the activities of the idiots, especially as the engineer responsible lives in that area, and I only hope that they put a greater emphasis on the sensible drivers than they do on the fools.

TheGurkha
