g'day g'day (happy Australia Day by the way - hope we all enjoyed our totally irreverent day off from work)

I'd like to get a handle on the Australian members of this forum and hopefully encourage some more to visit.
Although some of the areas here aren't really relevent to us (ie I don't suppse we care if such a such a road in the UK is inaccessible at this time eetc) the wealth of knowledge that is to be found here is suitable for all nationalities. And where better to seek knowledge about the er....interesting characteristics and anomalies the great landrover badged vehicles can throw at us, than here.

Just a few ideas but I'd like to compile lists of camping sites with off roading trails and devise a scale of difficulty. Used car parts dealer lists, contacts for LR dealers that have treated you well, handy hints for supplies and repairs and so on.

And I welcome any ideas from anyone else out there. There are masses of landrovers in Victoria alone, I see twenty a day just around my town. Lets get some of them on here.
I'm gonna need some help guys - I've never done any off roading myself, and my technical knowledge is somewhat...non existent. But I think with assistance we can put together in this forum a great lot of information that can help us out.

G'day all. I'm from Bacchus Marsh and own a 2000 Disco 2 TD5. It goes really well. My son recently bought his first Landrover, a '97 Disco TDi and went camping/exploring this Easter somewhere in the Wombat State Forest with 3 other vehicles.

My first experiences in Landrovers was in New Guinea in 1963, a wild and rough
place in those days. Vertually no made roads or bridges except swinging ones.

Will keep in touch.

We're in the same boat, nearly took it back until we found out ours was made the year before the Ford takeover.;)
We're in Toowoomba and have had our Freebie on Fraser Island, back of Carnarvon Gorge(6 hr pub runs!) Great Ocean Road, and just about every National Park and State Forest in S.E.Queensland. Hi all:)

Hello from Newcastle, NSW, Australia.

We drive a 1996 Disco TdI, known as Oscar when he's behaving himself and Oscar the Rogue the rest of the time. Oscar has a few little extras, including a bullbar and snorkel, and upgraded springs and dampers.

Oscar has taken us on a few great adventures, including a crossing of the Simpson Desert. I have driven a few other makes of 4wd before this one, and Oscar is certainly the most comfortable vehicle we have ever driven in Central Australia. We think he is just great, even if I do spend more than average time under the bonnet compared with my mates.

Gidday all, we have just found this area. We are originally from Victoria and WA but are now living in Queensland on the Gold Coast. Have been talking to a UK guy on another site who suggested we try here for some help. Will post the list under another section. Our BEAST is a 93 Disco V8 petrol who is behaving like a PIG. Have been great until now. Well catch up with you all another time. Need to get help on this problem before the sun comes up. :-)

Hi Michelle, got a spare parts dealer for you. You will love these guys like we do. Range Rove is the name, Mitcham is the suburb. Yes, it is Mitcham Victoria. We have just bought all the gear to re-build our V8 from them and are on the phone continually from QLD getting advise. Steve is my contact but Alan Berry is the Manager. They are at 636 Whitehorse Road in Mitcham, phone 03 98743111. They have been great with pricing, compared with our local LR dealer who wants to rip us off. They are able to take Credit card orders over the phone for us, hopefully for everyone. We have been getting our parts from them sent to QLD via Aust Post.
Hope this helps :-):)

Just joined and new to 4Wd's

I know this thread is kind of dormant but what the heck.

In Brisbane, OZ. First real trip will be to Tasmania in a couple of months to explore the National Parks. Also about to join LROC Brisbane.

Michelle
24th Jul 2005, 13:30
It's dormant because its moderator knows nothing about 'off road' except what is seen by horseback lol...
Landy is used simply to deliver said horsie to aforementioned 'off road'...

Feel free to step in and take over any time lol

Actually... I do have a question for the locals...
(new thread..just for something different)

Hi mate,hows things?

Heres a brief instruction on how to attach images to your posts..

you to use the attachment feature of this forum, which gives you the ability to attach files of certain types to your posts. This could be an image, a text document, a zip file etc. There will be a limit to the file size of any attachments you make, as the forums should not be used as an extension of your hard disk!

To attach a file to a new post, simply click the [Browse] button at the bottom of the post composition page, and locate the file that you want to attach from your local hard drive.

Only certain types of files may be attached: these are the valid file extensions for files to be attached to this forum: bmp doc gif jpe jpeg jpg mov mp4 pdf png psd txt zip.

After posting, the attachment will show up in the body of your message. To view the contents of the attachment (if it is not already displayed) simply click the filename link that appears next to the attachment icon .

hello, everybody, iam (as u see) verry new on this forum.and not even have a land rover !!
but that's why i thought i would give this a go.were thinking of buying a used 4wheel drive, we live in alice springs and would like to get out of it every now and then.one of the cars that are priced nicely are the landrover discoverys,if you have a look at drive.com.au youll find heaps of them under ten grand and they will be about 10-12 years old.if you spend that money on a toyota youll get some thing much older.
i dont know mutch about cars and iam wondering what would it cost to maintain a car like that? 10 years old 4wd.
and if we buy somethimg like that what should i look out for awere there any specifick problems with these models?
than iam also thinking is there a good source for second hand parts when needed?once the car is here i would like to do some tafe courses to get a bit more familiar with the machine!!

looking forward for the responces,
cheer sfrom a rainy alice

as I'm beginning to find out they're cheap to get into but expensive to maintain and you ahve to find the right mechanics for them (some have no idea how to do stuff on these cars).
Power steering hose is going to cost me $130 (not sure on the price of a similar part in other cars). Shudder to think what this latest issue is going to cost me next week.
BUT - when they're going, theyre a ripper vehicle. Can get lowish years and mileage for a cheapish price as compared to Nissan patrol or Toyota landcruisers but by the same token ours obviously dont hold their value the way the other ones I mentioned do.

Hi

We're in Melbourne,

Had our SII TD5 Disco last month and already been to Fraser Island (We fitted a centre diff lock just after we bought it). What a hoot that place is!

Just learning all this 4x4 stuff and have young kids and a wife - who bale out and walk every time I take it somewhere near a river or up a hill! (They tell me it so thay can see how good the car looks going through it's paces - but I sometimes wonder).

I have So Many questions!

We are kitting the car out for a trip to the Vic High Country and then to the Simpson in the next couple of years (I still have to work) so any advice on what to do and especially what NOT to do is appreciated.

As for suppliers, we have found Ritters (Dealership) in Burwood and especially AMV in Ringwood to be outstanding. Great for advice and VERY tidy workmanship.

Where did you find a Land Rover Bear? - we lost my son's Rupert Bear on our trip to Fraser Island. He's devastated as Rupert has seen him through a few major trips to hospital.
Rupert was irreplaceable so maybe a Landy Bear could do it

I love my LR bear..hes so cute. I'd like the one with the leather jacket one day too..hmm

Maybe thats why they post so much on this forum .., to dam cold and

Red dust, hot days, blue sky's and Landrovers, it just doesnt get any better :sunshine::sunshine::sunshine::sunshine::sunshine:

Hello All

Here are the Landrovers I currently have. I'm really a Holden man, and now that Ford own Landrover, I'm all confused.

Lovley looking Series II. Fab. Where did you get the grill from? Also what size are those Yokohamas

G'day all!

Not many from the NSW or Sydney region here which is a big surprise. Thought I better sign in and make my mark for this part of the world ... I'm in the Blue Mtns west of Sydney. Currently restoring a 64 S2A 88" and just acquired a 68 S2A 109" Ex Military. I'd be keen to meet up with other Series owners in within the Sydney region. ;)

Best, Simon.

Hi All, I hail from Ipswich Qld. Recently snapped up a 10/91 Discovery V8i. Took it up to Rainbow beach at easter for a bit of camping and a lot of 4x4 driving. Purred like a kitten most of the time. Seems it loves to run on premium and stalls when run on standard unleaded. Mates tell me it blows black smoke under hard acceleration. I'm thinking it's probably running a touch rich. That would explain the extremely heavy fuel consumption. 90 litres for 330 klm Highway cycle. Anyone know how to tweak the tuning on the V8i ???

Hey, i have just bought a 2001 V6 Freelander SE =D. Seems like an excellent car so far but havnt yet been able to drive it offroad yet, apart from some dirt roads which it handled excellently on. Would love to go offroading but i dont have anyone to go with and i am not sure what is the closest places to offroad. I live near Bondi Beach in Sydney. if anyone else is in this area that wants to go offroading give me a PM =P also, can somone post up the Sydney/NSW offroad club websites or some others that have 4x4 fun events =P
peace out, luke from Sydney

Couldnt be happier. Well, will be when its in my driveway, then happier again when im out camping.

Perhaps you guys could start by noting down anything of interest...your local used parts dealers that you've had success with, etc etc...

Thanks for dropping by
