Thought it might be an idea to keep tabs on any fluffy stuff out there....:snowman:

I get this weekly forecast from Dave Wheeler in the Fair Isles.

WEATHER OUTLOOK FOR NORTHEAST SCOTLAND
Issued Saturday, 07 December 2002 at 09:53

HEADLINES
24 hours: MOSTLY DRY AND COOL WITH FRESH SE'LY WINDS.
Day 2-5: COOL WITH SHOWERS, WINTRY AT TIMES, AND FRESH SE'LY WINDS.
Day 6-10: COOL & MOSTLY DRY WITH S TO SE'LY WINDS.

SUMMARY
Generally cloudy with a few scattered showers and fresh SE'ly winds, the showers becoming more frequent and wintry on Sunday as fresh SE'ly winds increase fresh to strong and it turns cooler. Becoming drier after the weekend, the cool and mostly dry conditions probably lasting right through next week and the following weekend as SE'ly winds continue.

GENERAL SITUATION AND SYNOPSIS 06:00 UTC 07/12/2002
A ridge of high pressure extends southwest across the UK from the blocking anticyclone over Scandinavia. With continental origins the SE'ly airflow is now beginning to drag in drier and cooler air in from the east, though a still 'warm' North Sea will modify this and give generally cloudy conditions with scattered showers - these turning wintry later in the weekend as the cold air advances westwards.

Present computer models still show the area of intense high pressure over Scandinavia continuing to dominate our weather for the foreseeable future - holding Atlantic weather systems out to the west and leaving northeast Scotland in a generally dry and cool SE'ly airflow.

FORECAST Confidence level: Weather type - medium. Timing - medium.
Temperatures more or less the seasonal normal now, rising to around 6° or 7° Celsius by day, falling to 3° or 4° Celsius overnight - although the mostly cloudy conditions and stiff breeze will prevent a ground frost from forming except perhaps for localities to the west of high ground.

SATURDAY 7th: Cool, cloudy but mostly dry apart from an occasional shower. F4-5 SE'ly winds increasing F6 by evening when more frequent showers are expected to move in from the east.
Swell - WNW'ly at 3 metres.

SUNDAY 8th: A generally cloudy day with the occasional bright or sunny spell but also showers which will tend to turn wintry later - and a F5-6 SE'ly winds.
Swell - WNW'ly at 3 metres.

MONDAY 9th: Generally cloudy with showers, some wintry at times, at first. The showers dying out during the morning with sunny spells developing by the afternoon as F5-6 SE'ly winds back SE to E'ly and ease F3-5 - the lightest winds over Shetland.
Swell - WNW'ly at 3 metres.

EXTENDED OUTLOOK Confidence level: Weather type - medium. Timing - medium/low.
Cool with temperatures, rising to 6° or 7° Celsius by day, falling to 3° or 4° Celsius overnight, perhaps with a local ground frost away from windward coasts.

TUESDAY 10th - TUESDAY 17th: While Tuesday and Wednesday may see lighter SE to E'ly winds and perhaps less cloud, the remainder of the period probably continuing mostly dry - apart from a few showers which may be wintry at times - mainly cloudy and feeling cool in a moderate or fresh SE'ly wind.

On Wednesday outbreaks of light rain will gradually push eastwards. Temperatures close to average.
From Thursday onwards pressure will build across the UK bringing colder conditions especially to southern and eastern parts. Friday will be rather cold and dry across the UK.
By the weekend cold air should be established across the UK, although Scotland and north western parts are likely to be milder. During the weekend and into next week there is an increasing chance of snow showers developing in eastern areas. Some of these could be heavy.
Beyond the weekend we expect very cold conditions to exist, with an outside chance of blizzard conditions developing in the south during the middle of the second week.
NOTE: This forecast is issued with low confidence and there will be a special update during the week.

TheWeatherOutlook is one of the UKs leading online providers of long range weather forecasts.

- Snow at Xmas?
Issued 17/11/2002

As we approach Christmas once again the usual question is being asked, will it snow on Christmas Day?
Latest indications suggest the weather will turn much colder in the period leading up to Christmas. By Christmas Day itself we are expecting milder weather to be pushing in from the Atlantic. As the mild and wet weather pushes in from the Atlantic, rain could turn to snow giving some moderate to heavy fall in places before it turns back to rain. Areas most at risk from snow are the Northern England and Scotland. Although it is possible that even London could have a spell of snow.

TheWeatherOutlook Christmas forecast will be updated regularly between now and Christmas Day.

"Substantial Snow"...... :yay:

14 Day UK Forecast Discussion- 09/12 to 22/12
Headline: Cold or very cold, some snow.
Issued 09/12
The weather is expected to continue cold or very cold for much of the next two weeks. Some snow is likely in southern and eastern parts. Later on during the second week conditions may begin to turn milder from the west.
Monday will be very cold and mostly dry. Some wintry showers are possible in eastern coastal areas. Frost developing overnight.
Tuesday and Wednesday will again be very cold and mainly dry. Some sleet or snow is likely for southern areas. Over higher ground there maybe some light to moderate accumulations. Rain rather than snow is likely in the extreme south.
Thursday and Friday should dry in most areas. Isolated wintry showers in eastern coastal regions are possible. Some rain or sleet may push into the south west later. Continuing cold.
The weekend is likely to be cold or very cold with an increasing risk of sleet or snow showers later. Eastern coastal regions are most likely to see snow showers, although even inland areas may catch the odd one or two.
Beyond the weekend the weather is likely to remain cold or very cold with an increasing risk of substantial snowfall. Towards the end of the forecast period milder weather may begin to push eastwards across the UK.

Aha, but that's the air temp, with the chill from the easterly wind it's not that warm up here! :icecube:
I can see snow on the mountain tops across on the mainland :yay: but the freezing level is still quite high just now. :depressed

This week has been good so far with clearish skys, 40+ miles visibility and sunshine during the day and clear nights. (Now I've said that we'll be doomed to rain and gales until christmas! :lightning )

OldFart
12th Dec 2002, 07:30
Ahhh yes i forgot the windchill factor Budgie :(

Despite the mild temps coming back, i'm still confident that the North winds will blow very cold next week, and there seems ample enough people on the weather forums who agree :)

I thought this looked interesting from Metcheck.com :-

We didn't want to mention anything but three model runs out to December 25th are showing the EXACT forecast which Metcheck issued last month... Gale Force Nor'easters for the UK!

This is still a way off but it is expecially encouraging that the models are already starting to back up our forecast for heavy snowfall in Eastern areas in the run up and over the Christmas period.

It does now appear that London will be a good bet for a White Christmas this year :-)

OldFart
14th Dec 2002, 21:35
Snow!
We are keeping a close watch on an area of low pressure moving east to the south of the UK during the next 48 hours. With colder air over the UK it's quite likely that some of the rain associated with this weather system will turn to snow. Some of the rain and snow could be heavy at times.
It currently looks as though most of the snow will be confined to higher ground in central and northern areas. However, even in the south areas over 200m above sea level may see some wet snow.
If you're planning outdoor activities or to travel we recommend you check the Met Office web site for possible weather warnings.

Cool Christmas
Added [Thursday December 19 2002 : 12/19/2002 9:50:43 AM]
Milder weather is now set to start pushing into Southern areas over the next 24 hours with temperatures returning to normal December values by tomorrow evening.

This weekend will see a return to slightly less settled conditions as frontal systems cross the UK from the Southwest.

Temperatures are expected to stay in the low double figures into the early part of next week before once again taking a dip in the run up to Christmas Eve as winds swing round to the North or Northwest bringing snowfall to the hills in Northern districts in time for the Christmas period.

It seems that Scotland in particular will get a good dump of snow next week :yay:

This discussion is my *PERSONAL OPINION* of how the weather may unfold next week. I will take no responsibility whatsoever for any actions arising from its use. It is provided freely in the spirit of freedom and the great love for meteorology that I personally enjoy and wish to share freely with others.

================================================== ===============

Discussion valid for Sunday 26/01/03 to Saturday 01/02/03
TOI Thursday 23/01/03 2100 UK local time This discussion is based on MRF, GFS, JMA, ECMWF, UKMO, FAX, and ENS (NCEP ensemble) labelled charts available from the superb http://www.wetterzentrale.de/topkarten

Very confident at 90% that the week will begin mild but also it looks like it will turn very much colder as the week progresses. Moderate confidence of 60% due to models coming into line that the second half of the week will turn very cold and wintry in all areas with many inches of snow likely in northern and especially hilly parts which will drift in strong to gale force northerly winds and likely to cause blocked roads. This could well end up the severest spell of the winter so far, even in the south of England where some snowfall is certainly possible.

On Sunday a deep low SW of Iceland and a high centred in Biscay will ensure a very mild west to southwest cloudy breezy airstream in all parts. Scotland, northern Ireland and northern England will have rain and drizzle, but the rest of England and Wales any precipitation is likely to be patchy and it may become bright in the SE.

Monday will also start cloudy and mild with patchy rain and drizzle. However, during the afternoon more persistent rain associated with a cold front will move SE across the north during the afternoon and the south late in the evening with cooler air following on behind as winds swing into the west. SW England may not see much rain but all parts will become rather windy.

On Tuesday the anticyclone will migrate west towards the mid-Atlantic as the low near Iceland starts to move east and later south of east. This will swing the winds into a fresh to strong northwesterly bringing showers into Scotland, Northern Ireland, northern England and later the Midlands and the SE. The SW may stay mainly dry with just a few showers. It will turn colder during the day with the showers turning to sleet or snow on northern hills.

On Wednesday as the upper air wavelength increases a substantial mid-Atlantic ridge is likely to build, though there is still some uncertainty on amplitude. Nevertheless it does look like the winds will swing round to the north behind a slow moving and deep depression off northern Scotland moving slowly east. This means it will turn colder during the day in all areas with plenty of sleet and snow showers packing into Scotland and later northern England giving significant falls over high ground. The SW is likely to stay bright with scattered showers, perhaps turning wintry on the moors in the evening.

During Thursday to Saturday it looks like turning very cold with strong northerly winds, perhaps gale for a time in Scotland giving bitterly cold conditions. The air will have come from the North pole and with relatively warm seas to the north of Britain, this is an ideal situation for polar low development. If this occurs (25% possibility) then an area of substantial snow is likely to cross Britain from the north. Impossible to say regions that would be affected and details may not be possible until 24 hours nearer the time, so it will be worth keeping an eye on the official forecasts from the Met Office next week. No area will be immune, even the south coast. Even if a polar low does not develop, all parts should see sunny intervals and sleet and snow showers, most frequent over exposed coasts and hills where substantial drifting with blocked roads could occur.

So to summarise a 60% chance of very severe wintry conditions in the second half of next week over the whole country. 40% chance of a less cold and drier, brighter northwesterly type.

Looking forward to some decent snow. Unfortunately, I'll be stuck with the MX5 until Friday as the wife needs the Disco and refuses to drive the Mazda in bad weather:snarl: Mind you, the "interesting" behaviour of the Mazda on snow is why I want to use the Disco.

Maybe I need to swap it of something more practical, A Tdi 90 perhaps?:cargos:

Anyway, we're heading off to the Alps next week and there's plenty of snow there:yay:

Hope we manage to keep some over here though. Scottish Off Road Club's Snow Hunt isn't happening until the !5th of March. With some luck the roads above Killin and Kenmore will still have some snow on them.

Check out the Website www.sorc.org.uk for details that will be posted as soon as the waiver of permit comes back from the MSA. We're not supposed to publicise it until then :shhhh:

Very heavy snow shower here (Belfast) earlier, but sunny since, and it's gone. Air temp approx 2decC @8:00, so we'll probably have a bit more. I expect it will have stayed on the Mourne Mountains, and I'm toying with a day off to play. :) Funny how it's fun when you're off work - but not when you're going to work. My poor fingers were frozen to the handlebars by the time I got here this morning. :icecube:

Hello Janine, :bigwave:

yes, nice to hear from you again! I was bemoaning the lack of snow here, because I wanted to go Disco skating this weekend!! The good news is that there's some snow now falling here, but I don't think it will come to much. I just hope it's a bit better on the fells, I'll have a look in the morning. Either Winter Hill or the Trough of Bowland.

Well, the Disco HAS remained dry inside, I'm pleased to say. It's amazing what a tube of silicone sealant can achieve!! With the wet weather we've had since, I'm glad I did solve it.

How are things with you?? Looks like you've had more snow than us, it seemed to go down the east of the country again and miss us once more! It's certainly chilly, though!! :icecube: I wonder if you are coming down this way again, or has your offspring finished college down here??

Janine

Hi,Garry,no snow here at all.I'm a bit miffed.
You are so lucky to have some snow, unless it was just the dusting last night, like Vicky.Gone this morning.
I hope you'll get to disco skate.
My offspring is married to a Hurst Green fella, and they both work at Stonyhurst College. We'll be down before too long I should think.:p
We will definately be down April 27th though for the landie auto-jumble at Garstang.

I'm really pleased that your disco is still dry,you did a good job on that!:yay:

Enjoy your snow skating.........careful though.:icecube:
Cheers m8.

Hi Janine,

I'm afraid the story here is the same as for Vicky - quite good snow for a couple of hours, then turned to rain overnight and the temperature soared to +6C!!! Not even a trace of snow, even on the moors!! Ah well!! Let's just hope it wasn't the last fall of the winter, I should still get my chance for fun in the Disco!!

Let us know when you are down this way, Janine. I may try to find you and your tribe at the Auto-Jumble, the date is still in my diary.......

The roads are pretty bad up here in the northern half of Scotland, the latest according to The AA:

Roads closed or badly affected include:

A82 Difficult driving conditions between Glencoe Village and Corran Ferry Turning in Northbound direction.

A92 Almost impassable between Inverbervie and South of Stonehaven in Northbound direction
A93 Road blocked by snow between Spittal of Glenshee and Cairnwell Summit in Northbound direction.

I think the A939 is badly affected too

A939 Road blocked by snow between Lecht Summit and East of Tomintoul in Northbound direction
A939 Road blocked by snow between South of Grantown and Bridge of Avon in Southbound direction.
A939 Road blocked by snow between Bridge of Avon and Tomintoul in Southbound direction

And thats just the main roads! As the say on the Jerry Springer show "Don't even go there"

(Note areas around and to the north of Inverness are badly affected e.g. the snowgates are closed on the northern streches of the A9, but I haven't included those in the report other it would be pages long!

Any others put them here please.

LOL, bit of CH (LPG) in the bedrooms and drying room, otherwise bit of NSH which are actually v powerful and controllable, bit of wall mounted electric (I know, dosh dosh dosh), couple of freestanding calor jobbies, none of which have much effect when it realy gets cold. All been upgraded piecemeal over the years but it does for now.

Right now I've got on two t shirts, two jumpers! Never have beleived in double galzing, sealed up houses and all that, combo of clothes and pumping out heat with a bit of ventialtion (ie leaky windows) suits me fine!! Most folk have their houses way too hot for my liking

Christmas forecast headline:

Bitterly cold air close by, Our initial forecast for Christmas Day this year suggests there is a possibility of a White Christmas in some parts of the UK. It looks as though the weather will turn bitterly cold during the Xmas / New Year week, and Christmas Day itself may be when the transition from milder conditions begins. However, at this stage it looks more likely that the transition to much colder conditions will occur between the 26th December and the 28th December.

MetFAX reads:

Sunday
Most places will be dry with plenty of sunshine, the best of the sunshine in some sheltered western areas. Eastern England is likely to be rather more cloudy at times and here a few showers are likely, though these should have dies out by evening. (Their spelling not mine!) Cloud may also thicken across the far Northwest later bringing some showery rain here. Temperatures should be near or rather above normal, feeling warmer in lighter winds, but cloudier, windier eastern areas are still likely to feel rather cool.

Wind speeds are shown to be between 5mph & 20 mph off the West coast of Scotland for Sunday.

Tomorrow, Thursday it is showing wind speeds of 20-35mph.

I take NO responsibility for this forecast it comes from the Met.Office, and we all know how good they are!

News Announcement
Early snowfall?

The weather looks set to turn significantly colder during the first few days of October bringing the possibility of some unusually early snowfall. Over 700m in the Scottish hills snowfall maybe quite widespread and heavy, with the possibility of blizzard conditions developing. It is possible that some snow will fall at lower altitudes in Scotland, and even over the hills in northern England for a time. The unusually early cold weather is expected to develop as a blast of arctic air tumbles south across the UK.

The Cornish Pasty started life as the working lunch for the tin miners to take underground with them. The pasty was easy to carry, could be eaten with dirty fingers, was nourishing. And could even have savoury at one end and sweet at the other.
Although the "traditional" pasty was made from beef, potatoes, onions and turnips, nevertheless the pasty was and is made from a variety of ingredients. The "TIDDY OGGIE" is filled only with potatoes, and you will come across ones with anything from rabbit to egg and bacon or cheese.

No of Servings: 1 Cooking Time: Over 60 mins
Meal Course: Any Course

Ingredients

225 gm plain flour
115 gm fat (mixture of lard & butter)
pinch of salt
225 gm steak cut into small cubes
2 or 3 large potatoes
piece of turnip or swede
onion, peeled and chopped
salt and pepper

Method

1. Sift the flour with the salt, rub in the fat and mix to a pliable consistency with some water, leave to rest for half an hour.

2. Roll out half the pastry into a round about 5mm thick (quarter of an inch)

3. Peel and slice the potatoes thinly onto the centre of round to form a base for the rest of the filling

4. Slice the turnip thinly over the potato, then spread the beef on top.

5. Add a little onion, season with salt and pepper

6. Dampen the edge of the circle of pastry with water to help seal it, bring together the edges make a parcel with the filling in the centre.

7. There should be a neat pastry parcel. If you do get any holes, then patch them with a little extra pastry. You can make the pastry neater by crimping the edges. Fold over the edge to make it slightly thicker, then squeeze tightly between thumb and forefinger every 2 cms to make a neat pattern along the edge.

8 Put the pastry on a piece of buttered paper, make a small slit on the top to let the steam brush the top with a little milk or egg white, and put it on a greased baking tray.

9. Bake in a pre-heated oven at 200C (gas mark 6) for 30 minutes, reduce the heat to 190C (gas mark 5) and cook for another 30 minutes.

10. You can make the pasty as a starter, by making it smaller. Use a saucer as a template to get the size

Just been browsing my favourite weather forum, there is a hint of a Siberian Winter (http://www.theweatheroutlook.com/weatherreports/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=22034&whichpage=4&ARCHIVE=) :yikes:

Quote:-

As Gavin has hinted elsewhere, the current set-up looks reasonably favourable for the forecasts that Tom P and myself have issued. No doubt though developments now are critical for our winter. Someone else in this thread has pointed out the models are showing signs of the Siberian high retrogressing into Scandanavia. This is EXACTLY what we need to see evidence of during the next couple of months. If this can happen a couple of times this side of Xmas, it opens the doors to the possibility of a severe and sustained freeze in January and February. So in conclusion, all to play for right now, but so far, so good.

Hmmmm :scratchCh

As long as it dosen't freeze, have noticed the last couple of days I've had to scrape my windscreen and as I've got short wee legs I have to climb on the wheel to reach the middle of the screen and it's a bloody big windscreen on a Discovey!

Duncia,... have you ever tried using Rainex from Halfords, not only does it expel rain off your windows ( very useful to keep side windows clear) but its also supposed to help stop frost forming on the windscreen.
Another use is to smear it on the headlamp lense, which should stop snow building up and lights fading.

Might be worth a try :dunno1:

ohhhhh ..... maybe some snow for Owen in the month ahead :D

The next 45 days - 4 Nov to 19 Dec, Issued 3/11/2003
The 45 day outlook is updated each month. The forecast is based on output from various global forecasting models combined with our own data.
Headline: Cold. Some snow.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Temperature
Temperatures overall are expected to be below their long term seasonal average values. The deviation from the Central England Temperature (CET) 1961-90 series is expected to be between –0.8 and –1.7C.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Precipitation
Rainfall in southern areas is expected to be in the region of 55% to 90% of the average. Northern areas can expect rainfall levels to be very close to average.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

4/11 to 10/11
High pressure will build during the week leading to much dry and settled weather. During the first half of the week winds will be from the south bringing unseasonably mild, or even warm weather. During the second half of the week high pressure begins to drift north towards Scandinavia allowing a feed of colder surface level air to reach eastern parts of the UK in particular. By the end of the week temperatures in the south and east are likely to be close to the November average, however, it will remain milder in northern and western areas.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

11/11 to 17/11
For most of the week high pressure will again control the weather for much of the UK leading to rather cold, but dry conditions with sunny spells. However, towards the middle of the week low pressure will push towards the south west of the UK bringing some rain and strengthening easterly winds to southern areas. The second half of the week is likely to see settled weather return to all areas with overnight frosts intensifying and becoming more widespread.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

18/11 to 24/11
High pressure is likely to reposition itself to the north west of the UK, introducing a northeasterly air stream to the UK. This will introduce a spell of colder weather with the likelihood of wintry showers in eastern areas. During the middle part of the week there is a significant risk of a major area of low pressure crossing southern or central parts of the UK, bringing heavy rain to southern areas, and heavy snow to northern parts. As this clears all areas will be left in a cold and showery air stream with the possibility of further snow, even in southern parts.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

25/11 to 1/12
High pressure is likely to push eastwards across the UK for a time leading to cold and frosty conditions for most areas. A change to less settled conditions is likely for a time as areas of low pressure begin to push frontal weather systems into western parts of the UK. As well as bringing some rain, they will also introduce milder conditions, although south eastern parts are likely to remain cooler.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

2/12 to 8/12
The week is likely to be rather mild and unsettled. South westerly winds are expected to bring rainfall to most areas, although south eastern areas are likely to see the smallest amounts of rain. Towards the end of the week drier conditions are likely to return leading to overnight frosts.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

9/12 to 15/12
During the week conditions are likely to turn colder as high pressure once more builds to the north of the UK. Frost will become increasingly widespread, and during the second half of the week there is an increasing risk of wintry showers, turning increasingly to snow in eastern areas. The west can expect mainly dry weather, and although there will be overnight frosts, it will generally be less cold here.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

16/12 to 19/12
Generally cold and frosty conditions are likely as the weather is dominated by high pressure to the north of the UK. Eastern areas can expect the possibility of snow showers at times.

Even Bill Giles is going for a cold January.....:icecube: :icecube:

Bill Giles ..... BBC Weather Site (http://www.bbc.co.uk/weather/features/90day.shtml)

Updated 3 November 2003.
Bill explains how he makes his long range forecasts or listen to him describe it here.

Still a chance of some snow around the Christmas period.

I started the debate last month about the likely weather over the Christmas period and the New Year. I mentioned that I thought there could be some snow around the Christmas week, and I still stand by that statement. However, whether it occurs just before or just after Christmas Day is still uncertain.

The patterns thrown up by the computer models for the coming winter give a somewhat conflicting picture. At this stage I would say that there is about a 40% chance of a wet mild winter, but a 60% chance of the coming winter being one of the coldest and driest that we have had for a number of years.

My following predictions are based on the fact that I think the most likely scenario is for the cold weather to win, but I will keep you up to date on my thoughts about this over the coming weeks and months.

December
This can often be a very gloomy month with major temperature variations between coastal and inland areas of the country. I think it is likely that high pressure will dominate the scene this year, which means we are likely to get a lot of cold frosty weather with fog patches that could linger all day in some river valleys.

1 - 3 December
It looks like being a dry, cold start to the month with sunshine by day but frosty nights with some fog patches that could linger all day in places.

4 - 9 December
This could be a period when the high pressure breaks down for a while allowing rain bearing fronts to move in from the Atlantic. The wet and windy weather will push in from the west, with the heaviest rain over Scotland, Northern Ireland and northwest England.

The strong northwesterly winds will make it feel milder than the early part of the month.

10 - 25 December
After the wet and windy weather of the previous week, the anticyclone could well become established again and last right through to the Christmas period. The unsettled milder weather of the previous week will gradually give way to colder brighter conditions again.

Most places will then have long sunny spells during the day, after any early morning fog has cleared, but it will feel on the cold side with widespread night frosts.

26 - 29 December
During this period more unsettled weather is likely to try and push across the country but, after the recent cold spell, some of the rain will turn to snow. The timing of this change is still a little uncertain. I am not quite sure just yet as to whether it will occur just before or just after Christmas, so keep watching this space!

30 - 31 December
By the turn of the year the colder weather, with sunshine by day and fog and frost at night, will have returned to give a seasonal feel to New Year's Eve.

January 2004
This, to me is the depth of the winter with the short days and long dark nights. There can be wild variations in the weather across the country with some coastal areas staying quite mild, whilst not far inland there could be a severe frost.

1 - 12 January
This looks as though it could be a very cold period with the Scandinavian High pressure the dominant feature of the weather. So for most of the country there will be crisp winter sunshine, but also some widespread frosts and freezing fog patches at night.

13 - 17 January
High pressure is still likely to be in charge during this period, but with its centre out to the west of Ireland most of the country will have bitterly cold northerly winds, which may bring some snow showers to north facing coasts and hills. Inland, sheltered from the winds, there will be a severe and penetrating frost.

18 - 22 January
Low pressure could well drift into the United Kingdom bringing cloud and some sleet or snow to many areas, but it will not be anywhere near as cold as the previous week.

23 - 31 January
High pressure is likely to re-establish itself, so there will be a return to cold, frosty weather with southeasterly winds feeding off the near Continent. By the end of the month the winds could have swung into the south.

These will bring somewhat less cold weather but they will also hint to the fact that some rain in the Atlantic could swing in and turn to snow as it does, so we could be in for a change of weather with the change of month.

SUMMARY
Cool and cloudy today with scattered showers becoming frequent and wintry later as light and variable winds are replaced by a strong to gale NE'ly wind this evening.

Much colder on Sunday with a risk of significant snowfall as strengthening NE'ly winds back strong to gale N'ly. After a cold start Monday is expected to turn milder as strong NW'ly winds back SW to W'ly.

Mild on Tuesday with outbreaks of rain and a moderate SW'ly wind, the wind strengthening to a S'ly gale by Wednesday morning as a band of rain moves through the area then turning clearer and showery by Christmas Eve with fresh SW'ly winds.

By Christmas Day we should see a strong W'ly wind bringing cooler conditions and, while the probability of a white Christmas remains low, the showers are likely to be wintry at times with hail or sleet. By the weekend, as easing winds veer more N'ly, we may see the showers turning more readily to snow.

GENERAL SITUATION AND SYNOPSIS 06:00 UTC 20/12/2003
A complex pattern of low pressure covers the British Isles and, with centres close to Faeroe, in the southern Norwegian Sea, over southern Scotland and over the Bristol Channel, northeast Scotland lies in a slack pressure field. A ridge of high pressure extends south from the east Greenland high across Iceland into mid Atlantic.

Later today, as low pressure transfers east to form one deepening low centred over the central North Sea, a freshening E'ly airflow will back NE'ly and strengthen to near gale over northeast Scotland. During Sunday as high pressure intensifies to the west with an anticyclone developing to the southwest of the British Isles and the low moves away across the North Sea into Denmark a strong to gale and cold N'ly airflow will develop across the UK.

As the anticyclone moves towards the British Isles a ridge swinging east across Scotland on Monday will cut off the strong arctic airflow and, with pressure remaining low to the north as the anticyclone continues east to the south of the British Isles, much of the Christmas week, will see a strong, cool W'ly airflow carrying fronts east through the Northern Isles on Tuesday and again on Christmas Eve. Probably not a White Christmas, but a synoptic pattern is becoming established which may well result in another wintry spell between Christmas and the New Year as the main centre of low pressure moves to a position somewhere to the north or northeast of Scotland.

FORECAST Confidence level: Weather type - medium. Timing - medium.
Cool today with a daytime high of 5° or 6° falling to 2° Celsius tonight. Cold on Sunday with a temperature of 1° or 2° Celsius falling to -1° in the showers later in the day. Turning milder on Monday, the temperature rising from near freezing to 4° Celsius by evening.

SATURDAY 20th: Cloudy with scattered showers, wintry at times, and winds light and variable in direction at first. The showers, becoming more frequent by midday as cloud thickens, merging into longer periods of sleet - with wet snow over the hills - during the afternoon as freshening E'ly winds back NE'ly and increase F4-5. During the evening as NE'ly winds increase F5-7 falling temperatures are likely to bring snow showers to all levels and, with the freezing of slushy deposits, icy conditions in places.
Swell - N'ly 3 metres.

SUNDAY 21st: A cold day as F6 to gale F8 NE'ly winds back N'ly bringing frequent snow showers. With temperatures falling close to freezing later in the day and with the showers perhaps prolonged at times drifting of lying snow may occur - even at low levels.
Swell - N'ly 3 metres.

MONDAY 22nd: After a cold night with further snow showers the morning will become mostly dry with clear or sunny spells as the overnight F6-7 NNW'ly wind backs W'ly and eases F2-4 by midday. A mostly fine afternoon, though thickening cloud will limit any sunshine. During the evening, as winds back S'ly and strengthen F5-7, rain - starting off as sleet at lower levels and snow over the hills - will move east across the area.
Swell - N'ly 6 metres.

EXTENDED OUTLOOK Confidence level: Weather type - medium/low. Timing - low/medium
Milder with temperatures in the daily range 6° to 8° Celsius at first, cooler by Christmas day with 4° to 7° Celsius and possibly a cold 1° to 5° Celsius by the weekend.

TUESDAY 23rd: Generally cloudy with early rain clearing to scattered showers, a mild F4 SW'ly wind backing S'ly and increasing F5-7 later as another period of rain moves east.

CHRISTMAS EVE 24th: Generally cloudy with early rain clearing to showers as strong S'ly winds veer SW'ly and ease during the morning. Turning cooler during the evening as SW'ly winds veer WSW'ly and freshen a little, the showers perhaps turning wintry overnight.

CHRISTMAS DAY 25th - TUESDAY 30th: Christmas Day and Boxing Day probably cool, generally cloudy and breezy with showers, perhaps wintry at times with hail or sleet. By the weekend we may well see cold- though possibly lighter - N'ly winds bringing another wintry spell.

(Though a 'white Christmas' is defined as one where one flake of snow (perhaps is observed to fall during the 24 hours of Christmas Day, in my books it would be a day when there is at least enough lying snow to scrape together to make a small snowman! Lots of Snow here - there was about an inch when I woke up this morning, been snowing steadily all day, probably about 6 inches just now. The winds starting to pick up a bit so I expect some decent drifts by morning. I'm away out to play again so i'll try and take some pics.

Regards

Jamie

I hear from a friend Hector that they're struggling to keep the A9 open at Drumochter :yikes:

I can imagine, its when the snow starts to drift that the problems really start. Also the A9 being a trunk road is ploughed by BEAR who are absolutely useless, the local councils used to provide a much better service.

Will keep you updated and try to take some pictures.

Regards

Jamie

Well the main forecasted cold front was always supposed to be today, I understand that temps are now dropping in Inverness which signals the start of the wind shifting which will then drag the cold Northerlys in and then we should see some snow. Probaly wont get here untill late afternoon/early evening.
So next 24 hours for the east side of Scotland and NE England could be interestingly snowy :buck:

I see the Cairngorm Webcam is covered in snow, would someone care to go and clear it please :smart:
