View Full Version : The Perfect Landy Hybrid......

Whilst trundling around the snowy country lanes last night bringing the missus home from her snowbound work I was thinking how glad i was that i'd taken the Disco and not the series 3 to pick her up........that got me thinking what would be for me the perfect landy.

Well I love the ruggedness of a series Station Wagon, and the space of the LWB, but the ride is crap, the brakes are what you'd expect from drums and shoes, and the steering leaves a lot to be desired ......

Whereas the Disco handles superbly in snow, ride comfort is excellant, and the steering/braking, suspension geometry seem perfectly balanced for all on road conditions.

So if money was no object I'd put the Series 3 Station Wagon Safari body with the Disco running gear and transmission, with a 200 Tdi Engine in :)
Then with uprated seats, improved heating, you'd have one hell of good motor...:yay:

....any more suggestions.......

.... or what would be your perfect hybrid for NORMAL use.....:D

Err O/F sounds to me like you have described something called a 110!! :D

Same running gear as a Disco, with all the space for the S3 LWB.

A 1-Ton 109" with a 300TDi with a canvas tilt would suit my every need. Almost.

A 110 with the HS 2.8L TGV diesel (2.8lt version of the 300Tdi) and also comfy seats and plenty of soundproofing :)

Hmmm, not 100% convinced, but each to there own.

Would a 109 body on Disco running gear not handle just like a 110.

With a little tweeking I am sure a 110 could be as comfortable as a Disco.

Stephen and Clive's blue faces were probably due to Stephen's heater not working :p .....

110" CSW, possibly bobtailed to get rid of that dreadful overhang. ZF autobox, 3.9 EFi V8.

'Nuff said.

Failing that a Range Rover.... LSE anyone?

I did say for on road use, so for me "IF" it was to be a customised 110 the overhang would have to stay :D

As for autobox, is it only me that much prefers to choose the gear to suit the conditions rather than machine choose, my experience of low gears in auto is that there are times it just aint low enough. One example would be like last night, going down very steep hill in the back of beyond and the road was icy with water running over it .....to be able to choose the gear one felt best is surely a better choice :dunno1:

Thought we were talking about the likes of Stephens 110.....4 gears and lower ratio :dunno1:

My 4 speed is a rarity. :D

You can't make one 'idea' off roader. Everyone wants something different. 90's are brilliant off road, but not big enough for me. Mincing about in a Disco is nice and comfy, but again, not really big (or tough) enough. The same goes for the Range Rover. The 110 gives me the room I need, and so far hasn't really let me down off road. Last time I was stopped was on the Corrieyairic, and that was down to wheel spin in the snow. I was still making forward progress, but the engine was working fast and hard was was overheating. A 130 would give me even more load carrying capacity, but wouldn't be so good off road. Horses for courses, etc. :p

Oh yeah. 90/110s with the LT77 has the same gearbox as the Disco. But it has a lower ratio transferbox. :p

great round town, hassle free driving, hill starts a doddle, parking even easier...

But I'm in the process of weaning myself of a 3L V6 Saloon for a manual Deisel Disco and the Disco is a lot more fun

Strange, eh?

No, 85 in second, 120 in third is Tony The Tiger style GgreeeaaatTT!!! (where legally allowed, ahem) but a manual gearbox is a lot more involving and ultimately satisfying

And kickdown is all very convenient esp in front wheel dive (sic) where you sometimes need both hands on the wheel, but kickdown half way round a fast corner is all bad

I'm looking forward to some Green Laning - if lionel and his cohorts still allow it :Cross: and reckon that a manual box would give an advantage

Nomex on: check
Engine running: check
let the flames begin

A Masai(sp) red, Seris 3 Station Wagon, because I love the looks of the Series vehicles, but built on a coil sprung galvanised chassis, Mack 5 wheels, disk brakes and a whacking great GMC V8 Turbodiesel and at least a 4 speed auto box. I'd go for two pedal motoring every time for the reasons given by Newbloke.

Then Id fit the interior out with BLRS high back seats and stuff in the "Techno" fabric pattern.

Just need those 6 numbers to come up!
