Planning on having a pootle round the high Alps on the French Italian border this summer. We plan to have a couple of nights camping and the rest in serviced mountain lodges.
Has anyone else been? Any tips?

Hi Widget,
the time you want to go there is a littel bit to early for some military-roads. You have a good chance to turn, cause there is no road-service and in this time you will find a lot of snow and morays on the roads/tracks (sorry my english is only for the supermarket :().
I have tried this region - Col Assietta to Liguria Boarder road (?) and in August it is some years to early for a car, also a LR. In the corners the sun do not reach, the snow it is up to 1 m - hard and wet snow, nothing to to shovel. I mean (thats only my experience of 4 years in this region) it is better to plan this tour for late August or first weeks of September. In the valleys it is no Problem but the very interesting routes are very high and cold.

Time out - I was too slow by editing :(
Very important.
Please look in the internet for informations of "free roads". Many of the roads and tracks I could drive with my 110 TD5 8 years before are now closed - environment protection.
When you will be catched on a closed road - will be very expensive.
In some regions it is possible to make guided tours - then the environment protection doesn´t care

Thanks for your replys, much appreciated.
We're now going out on 6th September and returning 14th Sept to get the best access to snow-free roads and miss the August traffic. I'll also look into the legal roads, the book we are working from might be out of date.
