He had been here for sure over the years. It could even be said he is but one of thousands who have.

As the sparse snow descends in a silent shower of Christmassy white he stands on the porch, a glass of spirits clutched in his hand. It sure is cold, freezing to some, but he just does not feel it for his mind is elsewhere. It is out there in the wilderness relaxed and easy, driving over the terrain with his friend and living the life of kings.

His daydream is abruptly dispelled by the voice of his wife; it cuts like a knife “Hey! Hank, get your ass back in here and cut the turkey! Goddamn it!”

As he turns to obey an old defiance floods through him, he stops and raises his glass to the friend at the bottom of the yard, downs it in one swallow as a salute and whispers “One day my friend, one day”.

He walks back into the pandemonium which is a family Christmas day gathering bawling “Goddamn it Mabel, cant a man have a drink with a friend!”

In the snow covered silence of the yard the Land Rover waits patiently for that day as promised so many times before.

That reminds me of the time I got my overalls on on Christmas Day morning a few years ago and went out to pipe the petrol tank up on my 2a 109 - got some funny looks off the neighbours but I needed to do it for some reason:confused:

cheers, Tim
